70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman
Chapter 476: Making Camp
Xu Mumu found a stone under the shade of a tree, and the two of them went over to rest for a while.
Yin Yang took out two scallion pancakes, one for each of them.
"Second aunt’s cooking is really getting better and better." Eating the scallion pancake, Xu Mumu felt as if she was on an outing, it was just too relaxing.
"It really is delicious." Yin Yang nodded.
"Do you want to eat wild chicken for lunch? I’ll catch one to roast in a while." Xu Mumu was craving the taste of chicken legs.
"Let’s eat." Yin Yang nodded, obviously, it was she who wanted to eat, his wife, of course, he would oblige her.
They had a knife and all, there was also a stream on this mountain, making it more convenient to clean the wild chicken.
"We don’t know where this stream comes from. Let’s follow it." Xu Mumu said while looking in the direction of the stream, swiftly dealing with the chicken in her hand, tossing away the innards directly.
Yin Yang had already found quite a bit of firewood, and had now lit it.
"Hmm, we can follow the stream and not worry about water." Yin Yang nodded, scooping some water into a clay pot to boil, and when it was done, he poured it into water pouches. Though this raw water was full of minerals, it also had a lot of bacteria, it was better to boil it before drinking to avoid getting sick.
By the time Xu Mumu came over with the skewered chicken, the water was nearly boiling. After applying some seasoning to the chicken, she started to roast it over the fire.
In this weather, staying by the fire, even though she was tolerant to heat, Xu Mumu felt a bit warm.
The wild chicken was quite plump, and once roasted, Xu Mumu divided it into two halves with a knife. She and Yin Yang each took a half, gnawing on it directly, since cutting it into small pieces wasn’t convenient here.
After half a chicken, at sixty percent full, Xu Mumu ate two corn cakes, and finally felt satisfied.
Watching Xu Mumu eat so much, Yin Yang didn’t say much, he knew that only when Xu Mumu was full, could she exert her strength fully, and he was long used to her appetite, it was nothing to be surprised about.
Having eaten chicken, the two continued onward at a brisk pace, completely out of the usual activity range of the large group.
"We haven’t encountered any large animals along the way, be careful." Xu Mumu stepped lightly, while Yin Yang softly reminded her.
"Don’t worry, my ears are sharp, if something comes, I’ll detect it right away." Even though she had been living in peaceful times for several years, some habits cultivated in the last days were not so easily forgotten, and she let her guard down only for her family.
"Then wife, you’ll have to protect us." Yin Yang laughed, walking beside Xu Mumu, pretending to cling to her like a little bird.
"No problem." Xu Mumu nodded.
Just a short distance more, Xu Mumu pulled Yin Yang, and the two swiftly climbed a nearby tree.
"Is something coming?" Yin Yang asked in a low voice, his eyes scanning around, standing on the branch allowed for a further view.
"Yes, quite a few. I figure it’s a wolf pack; we must have entered their territory." Xu Mumu nodded, her gaze piercing through to a bush, which was well hidden, the noise she heard came from there.
"Let’s hide here for a while, wait until they’ve left, then we’ll go down and take a detour, we still need to find a place to camp for the night." Xu Mumu said seriously.
"Okay." Yin Yang nodded, he wasn’t planning to provoke the wolf pack; although they were here for adventure, according to Xu Mumu, there were many wolves in this area, and two fists are no match for four hands, better to avoid unnecessary injuries.
They stayed there for about half an hour before the wolves finally retreated. Xu Mumu rubbed her legs, and they lowered their steps, veering slightly to the side.
Along the way, Xu Mumu kept her ears open, encountering many wild animals, and even saw two little squirrels.
Xu Mumu checked the time, it was already past four, and they still hadn’t found a suitable camp site.
"Mumu, look over there, that looks like a cave." Yin Yang pointed to a spot on the hillside.
"It really is, you have good eyes." Xu Mumu patted Yin Yang’s shoulder, expressing surprise.
"Let’s go, let’s check it out." Yin Yang said with a smile, carrying two more wild chickens, which Xu Mumu had caught.
Sure enough, there was a cave, it was quite large and relatively dry inside. Xu Mumu sniffed around and didn’t catch any strange animal scents; it seemed to be naturally formed, without any animals having taken over.
Xu Mumu took charge of tidying the cave and dealing with the wild chicken, while Yin Yang gathered firewood nearby.
Not far from the cave was the stream; Xu Mumu looked at the chicken in her hand and, too lazy to do more cleaning, she gutted it, left the feathers, covered it in yellow mud, and made two big mud balls to take back near the cave.
"Are we having beggar’s chicken?" Yin Yang asked with a laugh while dragging firewood into the cave.
"That’s right."
"I picked some wild pears, want some?" Inside the cave, Yin Yang opened a small bag, revealing over ten wild pears, golden and giving off a tempting aroma.
Xu Mumu placed the mud balls beside the fire, the mud balls wrapped in large leaves, so her hands stayed clean.
Xu Mumu took one, biting into it, with a refreshingly sweet and sour taste, quite good.
"There are pear trees here? Are there more pears on the tree?" Xu Mumu asked while eating.
"No more, that’s all from that tree, the rest have been pecked by birds, not edible. And there are a few monkeys guarding there." Yin Yang shook his head, explaining that the ones he picked were from a tree away from the monkeys; there were more, but since those monkeys also needed to eat, he didn’t compete for them, plus, bringing back so many wouldn’t be finished either.
"Monkeys, huh? They’re fierce and protective of food." Thinking of monkeys, Xu Mumu felt a headache. After the apocalypse, she had planned to go to the capital, but on her way, she encountered trouble in a forest with lots of banana trees, and some mutated monkeys.
Mutated monkeys were not only smart but also quite powerful, even though she was strong then, she got a hard time from those monkeys, and almost lost her life there.
Now hearing about monkeys, Xu Mumu just wanted to keep away, with no intention of provoking them.
The fire burned, as Yin Yang threw the two large mud balls into it, adding some more firewood to make the fire bigger.
As night fell, Xu Mumu moved two huge stones to the edge of the cave, blocking most of the entrance, ensuring no wild animals could enter during the night.
