70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman
Chapter 495: A Stranger Trying to Strike Up a Conversation
About Duan Yunkai’s situation, Xu Mumu didn’t know much. She just told the dean about the situation on the mountain over there. Now that place is protected and ordinary people can’t go there, and there are people protecting it, so the dean doesn’t have to worry too much.
After chatting with the dean, Xu Mumu packed up her things, said a word to Jiang Zhenghao and the others, and went back to the small courtyard.
The small courtyard was still relatively quiet. Professor Song had students to guide, and Professor Jian was busy grading papers.
After Xu Mumu returned, she started packing up the things she needed to take back. She wasn’t planning to live here permanently anymore, just occasionally staying a couple of times. Most of the things here she planned to take with her.
Xu Mumu packed up, sorted through her things, but in the end didn’t pick much to take. The most she took were her books, as her home didn’t lack for anything, and it wasn’t necessary to take everything from here back with her.
She packed her belongings into boxes, planning to leave in a couple of days. Lin Zhengze had already bought her return train ticket in advance.
In the evening, Professor Song and the others returned. They had known when Xu Mumu was leaving for a while, and although they felt a bit reluctant, they didn’t show it too much because they were eager to embrace their great-grandson. They just told her to work hard and have more children after going back.
Soon it was the day to leave. Xu Mumu took two suitcases, carrying only clothes, books, and her diploma.
Boarding the train back, Xu Mumu felt quite good. She had already arranged everything in the Imperial City. Lin Zhengze was looking after the house rental, so there wouldn’t be any major problems.
The train was crowded as it was close to the New Year, and not only people returning from work in other places, but also students going home.
Xu Mumu’s seat was by the window, sitting in the corner, holding a book in her hands.
Xu Mumu quietly stayed there, while the person on the opposite bunk was preparing to talk to her.
"Student, are you going home for the holidays too?" The person on the opposite bunk was a young man in his twenties, who looked like he was already working, not like a student, but there were a lot of older students in schools now.
Xu Mumu glanced up: "Hmm." She didn’t like the look in this person’s eyes, and Xu Mumu squinted slightly.
"Are you going back alone? Didn’t you go with your friends or your partner?" The man smiled kindly at Xu Mumu.
"No." Xu Mumu shook her head, then put her book down and took a snack from her bag to eat, quietly watching him to see what he was up to. Since she had boarded and found her seat, this man had been discreetly observing her.
It wasn’t that she was narcissistic. Although it was no longer the end-times, and she had been living in this world for several years, she had not completely let go of her vigilance. The only people she could let her guard down with were her family members.
"A girl like you taking the train alone, aren’t you scared?" The man’s voice was gentle, and his face showed an expression of harmlessness.
"What’s there to be afraid of?" Xu Mumu blinked her big eyes; if he was pretending, she would pretend too. "Is there a bad person on the train or something?"
"I wouldn’t know. By the way, student, what’s your name? Which school are you from?" The man asked curiously. This little girl seemed very innocent at first glance and surely easy to deceive. He was almost thirty and unmarried, and this girl’s beauty captivated him at first sight, prompting him to strike up a conversation with Xu Mumu.
Moreover, her attire was clearly not cheap, and the watch she was wearing was exquisite. He hadn’t seen such a style even in department stores.
Xu Mumu’s gaze fell on her wrist, and she thought of the watch Yin Yang had given her.
"Sorry." Xu Mumu smiled lightly, not intending to reveal her information. His gaze was calculating, so Xu Mumu didn’t plan to engage with him much. But if he tried to provoke her, she wouldn’t be polite, as she was just itching to use her strength.
Xu Mumu’s non-response left the man a bit frustrated, but he quickly returned to his usual self.
Xu Mumu read her book as the man occasionally tried to engage her in conversation. Aside from personal information, Xu Mumu remained composed.
At noon, when Xu Mumu planned to get some hot water, the man offered to help.
"Let me do it. It’s a man’s job to take care of a lady." The man smiled.
"Young lady, is this your partner? So thoughtful." An old lady from a nearby berth smiled at the two.
The man’s face beamed at the grandma’s words, and he didn’t offer any explanation.
"No, I don’t know him. I’m already married, Grandma, there’s a misunderstanding." Xu Mumu said, turned around, and went to fetch water.
The man was left in disbelief; was this young girl really married so young??
When Xu Mumu returned with hot water, the man was in line to fetch water, and he smiled at her as she came out.
Xu Mumu ate the beef pie Mrs. Liu made. It was very tasty and aromatic, drawing the gaze of some around her. Xu Mumu, unfazed, continued eating; it wasn’t like people who boarded the train didn’t bring their own food.
"Student, aren’t you still studying? You must have been lying about being married." The man took a steamed bun, ate, and looked at Xu Mumu, certain she was lying.
"Why would I lie to you? Can’t a student be married?" Xu Mumu smiled faintly; did he dare come closer?
"Not that, I just didn’t expect you’d be married so young. Why didn’t your husband come with you?" The man looked at Xu Mumu.
"Why do you keep inquiring about my matters?" Xu Mumu raised an eyebrow, looking at the man; her tone was somewhat cold. His excessive attentiveness was not pleasing at all.
"I’m just curious." The man responded awkwardly.
"It’s a private matter, and besides, we’re just strangers. You’re asking too much."
"I just wanted to make friends with you." The man’s face turned a bit ugly, feeling Xu Mumu was unapproachable and ungrateful.
"Sorry, I’m not interested." Xu Mumu smiled gently.
After taking a few bites of the pie, she found that looking at this person spoiled her appetite, so after eating just one pie, she didn’t feel like eating anymore.
She wiped her hands clean, drank some water, and then continued to read her book. The man didn’t bother her again to talk.
Throughout the day, Xu Mumu read through half of her book. As the lights in the carriage dimmed, she stopped reading and leaned back on the bed for a nap.
