Chapter 48: Katie Wants To Be A Hero

Vixen’s ability allowed her to teleport instantly to any location she had previously visited or seen. However, doing so not only exhausted the mind but also consumed a tremendous amount of energy.

Right now, Nicholas couldn’t care less about any of that.

Using instant teleportation, the space around him twisted, swallowing him whole.

In the blink of an eye, he reappeared right in the living room where Marina was and he was instantly hit by the thick black miasma filling the room.

’Her plague... It’s worse than mine’ Nicholas could feel the thickness of the black fog as it permeated through the entire room.

Marina noticed him, surprised with how he’d appeared so suddenly, but her fear outweighed that curiosity.

If anything, she was even glad he had such an ability.

Nicholas eyes scanned the room, searching desperately for Katie, and within moments his eyes found her, curled up on the ground.

Dark fog seeped from her eyes, nose and mouth, her body shaking uncontrollably as though possessed by a demon.

Nicholas didn’t pause for even a second as he dashed straight towards her, he pulled her into his arms, feeling the heat radiating from her feverish body.

Marina had tears rolling down her eyes, "Nicholas what do we do? Katie... We can’t lose Katie!"

"We won’t lose her Rina, we can’t lose her" despite saying the words with much confidence, he stared at the scene in confusion, ’What do I do?" He felt sweat trickle down his face.

He’d never felt so much pressure before... He had no idea how the plague worked and this was the first time seeing someone in such a state.

He could tell that even his wasn’t as bad her’s was.

He could only think of one possible solution.

’Void!’

It only worked on those with abilities, but the plague was what gave abilities.

Then it should work. It had to work.

{skill Void, activated}

He immediately noticed the fog thinning, small but noticeable.

’It’s working.’

He turned his gaze back to Katie, his eyes filled with hope.

Marina watched from the back helplessly, at this point she couldn’t care less about procedures like covering her nose, she only wanted to see her little sister fine.

Nicholas held Katie up, "Katie! Big brother is here, stay with me... Don’t let your desires consume you." His voice came in a panic.

But it didn’t seem as though Katie could hear him, her small body remained limp in his arms.

"Katie!" Nicholas roared, his voice echoing through the room, but there was no response.

The fog had died out, but it didn’t seem like it was over yet, her body didn’t shake as much as it was, but the black fog persisted, still permeating from her.

’It’s working, but I have to make sure she doesn’t give in to her desires... What could she possibly want? What desire does Katie want most?’ Nicholas ran through his thoughts.

Several things came to mind. Cats, Chocolates. Picnics.

For a child her age, there were countless possibilities, making it terribly hard to know what exactly would match her desires.

Nicholas gritted his teeth in frustration, but in that moment, a light suddenly sparked in his mind.

’Hero... That’s right! Katie always wanted to be a hero’ Nicholas eyes lit up in the realization.

"Katie! Don’t leave big brother! Don’t leave big sister! You’re our hero, so fight it!" Nicholas roared, his voice echoing desperately.

He watched with intent, but still the fog persisted even seeping out larger than before, ’What’s going on? It didn’t work?’

Nicholas felt his heart racing with every breath, heart pounding in his chest. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Marina gritted her teeth tightly, "Katie! Please don’t go!"

"Katie!" Nicholas hugged her tightly, feeling her warm skin against his, "Please be my hero, don’t leave us"

"Hehehe, Katie’s will beat the bad guys for big brother" her small voice whispered into his ears.

Nicholas felt a wave of relief crash into him, tightening his hug.

The fog in the room slowly dispersed, and Marina could see Katie with a small smile on her face, "Big sister"

"Katie!" Marina yelled, her eyes wide with disbelief.

Nicholas calmly loosened his grip, but even before he could fully let her out of his embrace, Marina already rushed in to pick her up, pulling her into a tight hug.

"Small brat! You scared us. Please don’t do that again"

Katie let out a little giggle, "Katie beat the plague for big brother and sister. Katie is strong!"

"Yes, yes you are" Marina said with a soft voice as she patted her on the head.

Nicholas stood from the ground looking at the two with an unreadable expression. After a long sigh of relief, a small smile appeared on his face.

"We’ll get her to the hospital tomorrow to be sure she’s alright" Nicholas said.

Marina didn’t respond to him, only throwing him a furious glare as she carried Katie into her room, she tucked the little girl into the bed, "Try sleeping, if you can’t big sister will be with you in a few minutes" Marina said with a reassuring smile.

But just as she was about to leave, she felt a gentle tug on her blouse, she turned to see Katie’s round brown eyes staring at her, "Big sister, don’t scold big brother. It’s not him"

Marina looked away not wanting to meet the little girl’s gaze, how could she not scold him.

She had warned him. She told Nicholas that she didn’t want Katie going to school of all heroes. He hadn’t listened, and now this was the result.

"Katie, I have to stop this... We can continue with our normal lives. I can’t lose any of you"

"If you want to scold big brother then scold Katie too!"

"Why would I do that? You’ve not done anything wrong, it’s all Nicholas." Marina said staring at Nicholas who stood by the door.

"Katie has been hiding the sickness from sister! Katie was affected by the plague when brother had it, it’s not brother’s fault! Katie wanted to be a hero!"

Marina glanced at Katie dumbstruck by the reveal, but she didn’t know what to say, completely at a loss for words.

"We’ll talk about this tomorrow, everyone should go to bed" she said before storming out through the door.

Nicholas glanced at Marina’s retreating silhouette and let out a sigh.

’Being in a family is hard’
