(...continued where Selene still held Kieran)

"Autumn..."

Her name.

It slipped past Kieran’s lips like vapor once again...now thin, fragile, but very much persistent.

"...Autumn...Autumn..."

The sound was barely audible. A fevered exhale. A ghost of devotion.

Selene stiffened.

There was no violent outwardly show.

But things in her spine locked.

Her palm, still resting over his heart, pressed down...just slightly harder. Not enough to harm. Just enough to feel the stubborn rhythm beneath her hand.

Thud.

Irregular.

Weak.

Beating with her name.

"She chose the storm," Selene murmured quietly.

Her thumb traced the hollow at the base of his throat as she spoke, as though guiding the words directly into him.

"And yet you chose her over and over again...look at you Kieran...Is this the Alpha you wanted to be???Look at yourself...where do you stand? Where does your pack stand? Was she worth all this? "

The wind moved slowly around them. The fallen beast form of Thorgar lay unmoving behind her...The world itself felt distant... Autumn, the sea, the pups, the chaos...

Kieran’s breathing caught faintly, as though some part of him heard.

Selene’s fingers tightened almost imperceptibly.

"...You never learned to choose yourself."

She leaned closer.

Her hair fell like a curtain around them, sealing the moment...isolated... as her lips touched his... they quivered...

His skin was still burning beneath her touch, but the fever was stabilizing as she passed some fluid through that kiss...drop by drop.

Her power had done that much already. She had closed the worst of the bleeding. Sealed the torn shoulder. Reinforced the fractures along his ribs.

He would not die.

Not now.

Not unless she allowed it.

Her palm flattened against his chest again. Slower this time...deliberately,too close...she adjusted the current of her magic.

The warmth shifted.

What had been restorative became tempering.

Balancing.

Sedating to be precise.

His heartbeat steadied... but did not strengthen.

His breathing deepened... but did not awaken.

She suspended him there.

In between.

Between sleep and consciousness.

Between pain and relief.

Between life and the will to fight for it.

"There," she whispered softly with a satisfied smile.

His lashes fluttered weakly but did not open.

Selene studied his face in that stillness. The sharp lines of his jaw as her nails trailed over his stubble. The stubborn set of his mouth even in unconsciousness. The tension that never truly left his brow.

"You are safer like this," she told him.

The words were not cruel.

They were proud like she was so full of herself.

"No one can reach you here."

Her fingers slid upward slowly, brushing across his temple again, behind his earlobe, fisting a handful of his hair as she pulled him close...just a hint. But her touch lingered longer now, no longer pretending.

"The storm can’t tear you apart."

Her gaze darkened slightly. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

"She thrives in chaos, Kieran. You know that. You and her were never compatible, the moon chose wrong. You still have time, Kieran. Give her up.You don’t need to fight your mother. She isn’t after you at all. Think about it, Kieran. It’s just her.Once she is gone, you will get back your kids, you will get back your kingdom...you will have everything you could ever ask for. It’s just that one....Think about it, love. "

Her voice lowered further, softer...almost coaxing.

"She burns. She fights. She provokes gods and monsters alike."

A pause.

"And you bleed for it.Why? Why should you bleed for her irresponsibilities? Her arrogance? Her rise?"

The wind shifted again, slower now.

Selene’s hand moved back to his chest, spreading wide over his heart as though shielding it from something unseen.

"You think that is strength," she continued quietly. "That loving something destructive makes you noble. It does not.It is just straight reckless.Foolish,my love."

Her thumb pressed faintly against his sternum.

"But you never learned the difference between devotion... and self destruction."

Kieran’s breathing remained steady. Even. Suspended.

She watched his throat move with each inhale.

Watched the rise of his chest beneath her hand.

She measured it.

She counted it.

Controlled it.

"Just breathe, yes darling," she murmured. "Keep breathing. You can breathe just fine without her. Your life is not tethered with her. Not at all. You can in fact thrive well... very well... if it wasn’t for her! "

Kieran’s chest heaved, the slow rise and fall confirming the life still there, the heart still beating inside that body which was now looking like a puppet.

Her forehead almost touched his again but she stopped.

"That’s all I need you to do,Kieran. You must trust me."

A faint tremor passed through his fingers, as though some distant part of him tried to reach the surface.

Selene noticed.

She adjusted the magic instantly...tightening it like invisible threads.

Not enough to hurt.

Just enough to keep him anchored beneath it.

"Shh," she whispered."Ssshhh! It’s alright! It’s fine, love. You don’t have to fight right now."

Her fingers slid down his arm, resting lightly over his wrist, feeling the pulse there. Stronger now. Stabilized. Entirely dependent on her calibration.

"It’s absolutely alright now! " The words were quiet.

She studied his face again, memorizing the vulnerability there. This version of him...the one stripped of pride, stripped of war, stripped of choice... stripped of will, despair and desperation.

This version that could not pull away.

"You never let anyone carry you," she murmured, almost thoughtfully.

Her gaze softened... but something beneath it sharpened.

"Let me."

The uncanny wind moved around them again, brushing her hair back gently.

Selene remained kneeling beside him, one hand over his heart, the other loosely wrapped around his wrist.

Monitoring.

Controlling his pulse.

Keeping him suspended in that delicate space where he could neither run towards Autumn... nor die trying.

"You are safer like this," she repeated softly.

"And so am I."

His breathing remained steady.

Obedient to her touch.

And Selene stayed exactly where she was.

Watching him longing... suppressed for years...

Ensuring that for now Kieran belonged to the space she created around him as she murmured.

"I will decide when you wake."
