’She had known him for more than twenty years, and she’d spent over a decade trying to win his heart after they grew up. Yet, he’d never once looked at her with such deep, doting affection. What gave Clara Grant the right?’

Autumn Shelby couldn’t accept it, but she knew that if she kept pestering him, it would only make Seth Quinn resent her more. It was better to leave for now and figure something else out later.

So, she wiped away her tears and said to Seth Quinn, "Seth, I won’t give up on you."

Then she ran out.

Seth Quinn didn’t watch her go. Instead, he checked the time again, his brow furrowing even deeper. ’Chase Childs went to pick her up early this morning, so why isn’t she here yet?’

While thinking, he picked up his phone, preparing to make a call.

But just then, Autumn Shelby’s low cry came from the doorway. "Clara Grant?"

He immediately put down his phone and strode over.

When Autumn Shelby ran out, Clara Grant didn’t have time to hide. She could only stand there, body rigid, pressed against the wall and completely at a loss.

Autumn Shelby was seething with anger and was about to unleash it all on Clara Grant. But when she saw Seth Quinn walking over out of the corner of her eye, she had to swallow her rage. Frowning, she asked, "What are you doing here?"

Clara Grant felt the acute embarrassment of being caught eavesdropping. "I..."

She had only said one word when Autumn Shelby asked again, feigning a sudden realization, "Don’t tell me you were here eavesdropping on my conversation with Seth?"

"I-I... I wasn’t..." Clara Grant wasn’t trying to deny the fact that she had been eavesdropping, she just wanted to explain that it wasn’t intentional.

"You weren’t?" Autumn Shelby sounded skeptical. To her, Clara looked every bit the part of someone with a guilty conscience.

’Hah. Just as she thought. A woman like Clara Grant was so classless and unrefined, she even resorted to eavesdropping!’

’What was infuriating was that if she’d heard the conversation between her and Seth Quinn, she must be feeling insufferably smug right now!’

At that thought, Autumn Shelby seethed with a hatred so intense her teeth ached. She was just about to lash out at her when Seth Quinn reached them. Seeing Clara Grant in the corner, he called out gently, "Clara?"

Clara Grant had been about to explain, but at the sight of Seth Quinn, she suddenly grew flustered. She glanced up at him before quickly lowering her head again.

"What are you doing out here? Why didn’t you go inside?" Seth Quinn asked, seeing her flustered state.

’He wasn’t worried that she might have been here for a while and heard everything. His conversation with Autumn Shelby had made his stance perfectly clear, so there was nothing he needed to hide from her.’

’What he did worry about, however, was that she had only just arrived. If she only saw Autumn Shelby leaving his apartment without having heard their conversation...’

’...wouldn’t she misunderstand him all over again?’

"You..."

Just as he was about to ask a tentative question, Autumn Shelby lost her composure. The contrast between the gentle tone Seth Quinn used with Clara Grant and the cold indifference he’d shown her was so stark that she felt like she was about to explode.

"Hah! You ask what she’s doing here? She’s stooping to eavesdropping, that’s what! Seth, is this the new woman you’ve picked up?" Her voice dripped with undisguised contempt.

Seth Quinn turned to Autumn Shelby and was about to speak, but Clara Grant cut in first. Her expression had darkened, and her tone grew firm.

"So what if I’m his new woman? And what do you mean, I’m ’stooping to eavesdropping’? Who’s the one who left the door open? Besides, you’re the one who came here to seduce my man, and you were brazen enough to not even close the door! Now you have the nerve to question me? Don’t you find that hilarious?"
