Alpha Kael's dangerous Obsession
Chapter 27: What They Could Not Tolerate
Chapter Twenty-seven: What They Could Not Tolerate
The eastern tower did not sleep.
It never truly did. Not when matters of succession, power, or blood were involved.
Isolade stood near the tall arched window of her father’s private council room, watching the courtyard below. The torches burned steady. Guards rotated. Everything looked controlled.
Orderly. Predictable.
Everything except Kael.
She clasped her hands behind her back to keep them steady. She did not fidget. She did not pace. She had long ago learned that visible agitation weakened an argument before it even began.
Lord Valerius sat at the head of the long oak table, broad shoulders rigid, silver streaking through his dark hair catching the firelight. Age had not softened him. It had sharpened him.
Seraphina stood slightly apart from them, closer to the hearth. Her posture was relaxed, but there was nothing careless about her stillness. She observed before she spoke. Always.
"He is making a mistake, father " Isolade said finally.
Her voice was level. No tremor. No pleading.
Lord Valerius did not look at her immediately. "You will need to be more specific."
"He is choosing her. He even killed the elder in front of the entire pack because of her."
Now he looked up. The words sat heavy between them.
Seraphina did not move.
Isolade continued, "He has refused alliances that would strengthen the pack. He has postponed negotiations. He has allowed whispers to circulate unchecked. All because of her."
"Because of a wolfless girl from Ebonvale," Lord Valerius said, the disgust clear.
"Yes."
Seraphina’s gaze shifted slightly. "You are certain this is more than infatuation?"
Isolade turned to face her fully. "I am certain."
Lord Valerius leaned back slowly in his chair. "He would not dismantle decades of structure for infatuation."
"He already is," Isolade replied.
Silence settled for a moment.
Seraphina finally stepped forward, folding her hands loosely in front of her. "And what is it you want done?"
Isolade did not hesitate.
"She needs to be removed."
There was no emotion in the statement. It wasn’t jealousy. It wasn’t wounded pride.
It was strategy.
Lord Valerius’s jaw tightened slightly, but he did not object.
Seraphina studied her. "Removed how?"
"Permanently," Isolade answered.
The word hung in the air. Lord Valerius stood slowly from his chair. The movement was deliberate, controlled.
"I cannot stand watching my future son-in-law bargain away his authority..." he said. "He has offered concessions in exchange for keeping her untouched."
Seraphina’s eyes flickered briefly.
"He would exchange anything," Lord Valerius continued, "anything, to keep her."
Isolade’s jaw flexed at that. She had seen it herself. The shift in Kael whenever Liora’s safety was implied. The way he did not negotiate where she was concerned.
"It weakens him," she said quietly.
"It exposes him," her father corrected.
Seraphina’s expression did not change.
"So you want her dead." she summarized calmly.
"Yes," Lord Valerius said without hesitation. "I am demanding it."
Seraphina tilted her head slightly. "Demanding."
"I am still the foundation this fortress stands on," he said evenly. "If my son-in-law to be refuses to see reason, I will act."
Seraphina did not immediately respond.
Isolade watched her carefully. The older woman was not sentimental. She was not swayed by romance or wounded ego. If she opposed this, it would not be out of affection.
"Not yet," Seraphina said at last.
The refusal was quiet. But absolute.
Lord Valerius’s eyes darkened. "Explain."
"I do not oppose you because I favor her," Seraphina said calmly. "I oppose you because you are rushing."
Isolade’s fingers curled slightly at her sides. "Rushing?"
"Yes."
Seraphina stepped closer to the table. "You are reacting to emotion. I prefer information."
"She is wolfless," Isolade snapped. "There is nothing to investigate."
Seraphina’s gaze sharpened. "They’re bonded."
The words cut through the room. Isolade stared at her.
"Impossible," she said immediately. "She is wolfless."
"That’s exactly why I’m not dismissing it," Seraphina replied.
Lord Valerius’s expression shifted slightly. Not shock. Calculation.
"You are certain?" he asked.
"I do not speak without observation," Seraphina said evenly. "I have watched them closely. The way his control shifts around her. The way his wolf reacts when she is threatened. The physical proximity he tolerates from no one else."
"That proves attachment," Isolade argued. "Not a bond."
Seraphina’s eyes remained steady. "It proves something far deeper than attachment."
"She cannot bond without a wolf," Isolade insisted.
"That is what we understand," Seraphina corrected. "That does not mean it is the whole truth."
Lord Valerius exhaled slowly. "Even if what you suspect is true, she is of Ebonvale."
The name alone carried decades of hostility.
"Yes," Seraphina agreed.
"Then she is an enemy," he pressed.
"Perhaps," Seraphina said. "Or perhaps she is leverage."
Isolade’s composure slipped a fraction. "Leverage?"
"If she truly carries something unusual," Seraphina continued, "killing her without understanding it would be careless."
Lord Valerius’s voice hardened. "I will not have my son-in-law to be controlled."
"And I will not allow you to create a fracture in him that cannot be repaired," Seraphina countered calmly.
The room went still.
Isolade stepped forward now, unable to remain silent.
"She does not belong there," she said. "She has no lineage tied to that fortress. No loyalty. No standing."
"Are you certain about that?" Seraphina asked softly.
Isolade faltered for the first time.
"What do you mean?"
Seraphina studied her for a moment before answering. "I mean that too many things about her do not align."
"She seems like trouble" Lord Valerius said flatly. "That is not uncommon."
"She is different," Seraphina corrected.
Silence.
Isolade hesitated, then said carefully, "There is something else."
Both of them turned toward her.
"I took the precaution of speaking with someone from Ebonvale before the Luna celebration," Isolade said.
"Someone who knows Liora very well."
Seraphina’s gaze sharpened.
"Speak."
"Her sister," Isolade said. "Ivy."
"She contacted me before the ceremony."
Lord Valerius frowned slightly. "Ebonvale blood?"
"Raised in Ebonvale," Isolade clarified. "But she claims Liora is not one of them."
The room shifted.
Seraphina’s expression changed subtly. Interest.
"She claims Liora was never truly accepted," Isolade continued. "That she was tolerated. Used. Kept on the edge."
"For what purpose?" Lord Valerius asked.
"She did not specify. But she offered cooperation."
Seraphina’s voice lowered slightly. "Cooperation in what way?"
"In any way necessary to remove her."
That landed.
Lord Valerius’s eyes narrowed. "Why would her own sister assist us?"
"Because," Isolde said, her tone hardening, "she resents her."
Seraphina did not look surprised.
"Resentment is a useful thing," she said quietly.
"It is also unstable," Lord Valerius countered.
"Yes," Seraphina agreed. "But instability can be guided."
Isolade watched them carefully. "If Ivy is willing to provide information, that gives us access we did not have."
"It gives us a window into Ebonvale’s internal fractures," Seraphina corrected.
Lord Valerius crossed his arms. "And if this is deception?"
"Then we test it," Seraphina replied.
The room grew still.
Finally, Lord Valerius spoke. "I will not allow Kael to continue this unchecked."
"You won’t," Seraphina said calmly. "But you will not touch her yet."
His gaze hardened. "You presume much."
"I calculate," she corrected.
Isolade stepped closer to the table. "How long do you intend to ’investigate’ her?"
"As long as necessary," Seraphina replied.
"That could take months."
"Then we use those months wisely."
Lord Valerius’s patience thinned. "And if in that time she further entrenches herself in my son-in-law decisions?"
Seraphina met his gaze without flinching. "Then we will know precisely what we are dismantling."
The room went quiet again.
Isolade felt something cold settle in her chest. She did not like waiting. She did not like watching Liora move freely through halls that had always belonged to her, to bloodlines that mattered.
"She is dangerous," Isolade said quietly.
"Yes," Seraphina agreed.
Lord Valerius looked between them. "To whom?"
Seraphina’s answer was steady "To whoever underestimates her."
That was not reassurance. It was warning.
"And if the bond is real?" Isolade pressed.
Seraphina’s eyes darkened slightly.
"Then severing it incorrectly could destroy him."
The implication settled heavily.
Lord Valerius turned away slightly, staring into the fire.
"I will not have my son-in-law compromised," he said.
"You won’t," Seraphina repeated. "Which is why we proceed with precision."
Isolade exhaled slowly, forcing herself back into composure.
"What do you want from Ivy?" she asked.
"Truth," Seraphina said simply. "About Liora’s origins. About her blood. About what Ebonvale truly knew."
"And if she is merely bitter?" Lord Valerius asked.
"Then we will use her bitterness," Seraphina replied.
Silence again.
Finally, Lord Valerius spoke with finality.
"You have your investigation. But understand me clearly, Seraphina."
She waited.
"If she proves to be a threat to this family..., I will not hesitate."
Seraphina nodded once. "Nor will I."
Isolde moved back toward the window.
In the courtyard below, the torches still burned steady.
Everything looked controlled.
But it wasn’t.
Because somewhere in this fortress, a wolfless girl had shifted the balance of power without raising her voice.
And now they had to decide whether she was an anomaly to erase—
or something far more dangerous.
Seraphina turned from the fire.
"Send for Ivy," she said quietly.
"I want to hear what her sister has to say."
