Julian’s POV

The battlefield stretched before me like a nightmare painted in blood and ash. Children’s bodies scattered across the ground, some barely past their fifth birthday, others who had just learned to shift. Every corpse I passed sent a prayer through my mind, desperate pleas that I would never have to search for my own children among such devastation.

My boots crunched on debris as I approached the strategy table where maps lay spread across the wooden surface.

"This goes beyond a simple werewolf assault, my King," I declared, pressing my palms flat against the table’s edge. The Alpha King’s eyes remained fixed on the tactical documents before him, exhaustion etched deep into every line of his weathered face. We had all reached our breaking point, not just from the physical demands of burying the dead, but from the emotional weight that threatened to crush our spirits entirely.

"Dorian’s father dabbled in dark arts before his death. The son clearly inherited those same twisted interests," the King replied without lifting his gaze.

"You’re missing the complete picture," I pressed, refusing to let this slide. My finger traced the charred outline of Ironridge’s destroyed perimeter on the map. "I interviewed every survivor we could find, both from this massacre and from the Zenith Fang slaughter."

I slid a thick folder of witness statements across the table toward him. "Dorian never set foot on Ironridge soil. His scent was completely absent from both attack sites. He orchestrates these massacres from a distance, using others as his weapons."

But the most disturbing revelation was yet to come.

"Every single victim described the exact same initial experience," I continued, raising my voice above the despair that filled the war tent. "They didn’t feel terror first. They didn’t experience pain. Instead, they felt complete numbness spreading through their bodies. Their muscles seized up, leaving them completely paralyzed. Only then did the actual attack commence."

"Immediate paralysis before any physical contact?"

"Precisely." My jaw tightened with certainty. "Wolfbane cannot achieve that kind of instantaneous muscle paralysis across multiple strong wolves simultaneously. Even if Dorian has access to dark magic, this particular effect is different entirely. This bears the signature of witch craft, specifically designed to neutralize werewolf defenses before combat begins."

The tent fell into absolute silence. The alliance between witches and alpha wolves represented our deepest fear, a nightmare scenario we had dreaded for generations.

"So we’re supposed to fight supernatural spells with teeth and claws?" the royal beta questioned, defeat weighing heavy in his voice.

I shook my head firmly. "We counter their alliance with a superior alliance. We negotiate directly with the witch covens."

The silence that followed felt suffocating and deafening.

"Julian, you understand exactly what you’re proposing," the Alpha King snarled, his voice dropping to a menacing growl. "Werewolves never form alliances with witches. Such partnerships are absolutely forbidden. They violate everything our forefathers died protecting. If I approach any coven seeking alliance, my own people will brand me a traitor."

I understood our laws. I honored our traditions. But those same traditions were currently allowing innocent families to be butchered.

"My King, the witches are clearly receiving substantial compensation for their assistance. They would never aid Dorian without securing significant benefits in return. Witches never provide help without demanding payment," I argued, frustration burning in my chest. "If we approach their coven and present them with better terms than Dorian’s current offer, they will abandon him immediately. This would leave Dorian completely exposed, defenseless, stripped of his most powerful advantage."

He rose from his chair, his imposing frame towering over me. "I refuse to betray our people for uncertain gambles, Julian. I lead werewolves, not magical covens."

The atmosphere grew thick with tension, becoming almost unbearable. I had spent countless days reviewing reports filled with dead children and destroyed packs. I had sacrificed sleep and time with my own children because I wanted this war ended, and he worried about following ancient protocols.

Something inside me finally broke.

"With complete respect, you haven’t produced any viable solutions in days!" I challenged, my voice rising as my wolf stirred restlessly. "Multiple packs have paid the ultimate price while we clung to outdated traditions. If you want to demonstrate your worthiness as Alpha King, then develop solutions that actually work, not just ones that conform to ancient regulations."

"Never address me with such disrespect, Alpha Julian."

I immediately stepped back, sensing his wolf rising dangerously close to the surface.

"I offer my sincere apologies, my King," I forced out through gritted teeth. "I am beyond frustrated. More frustrated than I have ever experienced in my lifetime. I desperately want to return home right now. I want to be with my children, raising them without constantly fearing nighttime attacks."

My explanation seemed to drain the fight from him. He exhaled deeply, a weary sound that echoed throughout the tent. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

"Julian, we all share that desire," he admitted, massaging his temples. "But this plan carries enormous risks. We have no knowledge of Dorian’s promises to them. His offer might exceed anything we can provide."

"Then we initiate dialogue," I replied. "We simply need to begin the conversation. Let’s discover their asking price."

He opened his mouth to voice another objection, but my phone suddenly rang with Holden’s ringtone.

My heart plummeted instantly. Holden only contacted me during genuine emergencies.

I raised my hand toward the King. "Please excuse me."

I answered quickly, tension evident in my voice. "Holden? Is everyone safe?"

My tone clearly conveyed my expectation of bad news.

Holden’s typically steady voice sounded strained and shaken. "No, Alpha. Definitely not. We experienced a serious threat."

My vision tunneled. "What occurred? Is the pack secure? Are my children unharmed? Has Seraphina been hurt?"

"They’re currently safe. However, our scouts reported numerous wolves gathering along our territorial borders."

"Did you successfully repel them?"

"No, sir. We immediately informed Luna Seraphina. She stated she would handle the situation personally."

I felt my wolf begin whimpering, sensing approaching danger.

"What action did she take, Holden?" I demanded, terror clawing at my throat.

Holden hesitated, sounding amazed even through the phone connection. "We’re uncertain of the exact details, Alpha. But there’s now a barrier. An enormous, transparent protective field surrounding our entire pack territory. It’s massive. Dorian will definitely be unable to penetrate our defenses."

Relief lasted mere moments.

"And Seraphina?"

"She collapsed, Alpha," Holden said with obvious worry. "Immediately after the shield stabilized, she fell unconscious. She’s currently in our medical facility, but our healers are completely baffled. Her vital signs are stable, but she remains unresponsive."

My legs suddenly felt unsteady. I gripped the table edge tightly, images of my beautiful mate lying pale and motionless flooding my mind.

Seraphina had never channeled power of such magnitude. Never even close. Every previous instance of her using abilities had resulted in health consequences: unconsciousness, prolonged severe headaches, persistent nausea.

This shield, this protective barrier Holden described, represented ten times the power she had ever previously wielded. Ten times the energy required to safeguard an entire territory.

Ten times the usual toll.

This wasn’t simply a consequence. This could prove fatal.

"I’m returning home immediately," I told Holden.
