Chapter 184: Chapter 184 Summit of Love

Seraphina’s POV

The gentle rhythm of Julian’s breathing was the only sound filling our bedroom when consciousness pulled me from sleep. Yesterday evening had been incredible. We had managed to repair some of the damage that had been tearing our relationship apart. Yet I understood that daybreak would bring back all our troubles. The deception, the hidden truths, and Cordelia would return to haunt us once morning arrived. I turned toward him and gently nudged his shoulder.

"Julian," I murmured softly. "Time to get up."

He let out a low groan and yanked the pillow over his face. "Leave me alone. The sun isn’t even up yet."

"It’s already morning," I insisted.

"Seraphina," he muttered drowsily. "What’s gotten into you? Is there an emergency?"

"Not exactly," I replied. "But there’s something we need to discuss."

He exhaled heavily and pushed himself upright, running his hands through his hair. "Can’t this wait? Maybe after some coffee? Or another few hours of rest?"

"Absolutely not," I stated with determination.

I positioned myself cross-legged on the mattress, facing him directly. "Yesterday you made it clear that you want me to keep my distance from Cordelia," I began. "You expect me to abandon my pursuit of her and place my faith in whatever scheme you’re cooking up."

Julian gave a quick nod, his alertness returning rapidly. "Exactly."

"Well," I continued. "I’ve given it serious consideration. I’m willing to comply."

Surprise flickered across Julian’s features. "Are you serious? You’re actually going to follow my lead?"

"I am," I confirmed. "However..."

"Of course there’s a catch," he said, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly. "What do you want?"

"I’m asking for something in return," I explained. "There’s one requirement."

"Go ahead," he said. "Are we talking about diamonds? A luxury vehicle? Perhaps some new equipment?"

"None of those," I replied. "I want our family to spend the entire day together. Just the four of us. No pack responsibilities. No electronic devices. No thoughts of Cordelia."

Julian’s expression grew wary. "Alright... what exactly did you have in mind?"

"A hiking expedition," I declared cheerfully.

Julian’s face dropped completely. He appeared genuinely appalled. "Hiking? Seraphina, I race through those forests daily in wolf form. What possible appeal could there be in trudging through them at human pace? It sounds mind-numbing." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

"It’s about bonding time. We’re heading to the Verdant Peak Way."

"That’s a lengthy trek," he protested.

"The children are going to despise it. I’m going to despise it."

"That’s unfortunate," I said, folding my arms across my chest. "Those are my terms. You provide me with this family hiking adventure, and I’ll remain quiet about your mysterious strategy. Accept it or reject it."

Julian studied me intently. He considered his alternatives carefully. "Agreed," he grumbled into his pillow.

Half an hour later, the struggle shifted to the children’s bedroom.

By early morning, we had loaded our vehicle with water containers, prepared meals, and various snacks. The journey to the trailhead began in silence. The kids sulked in the rear seats. Julian consumed his coffee as though it were essential medication.

However, as we climbed higher up the mountainside, sunlight finally pierced through the cloud cover. The heavens transformed into a stunning shade of blue. Everything around us seemed touched with gold.

We left the car and stepped outside. The atmosphere was sharp and refreshing. It carried the scent of evergreen needles and moist soil.

"Alright, everyone," I announced, bringing my palms together. "Let’s move out!"

The first stretch unfolded exactly as I had dreaded.

"My feet are getting sore," Theo grumbled after barely a dozen steps.

"These boots are pinching me," Elena protested.

"How much further?" Julian inquired mockingly.

I shook my head in exasperation. "You’re all hopeless. Keep moving!"

Then something wonderful occurred.

We discovered a branch. Not just any ordinary piece of wood. It was an elongated, gnarled limb that resembled a sorcerer’s staff.

"Amazing," Theo exclaimed, lifting it up. "Check this out, Dad! It’s an enchanted blade!"

Julian’s expression brightened immediately. His paternal instincts kicked into high gear.

"Hand that over," Julian requested. He examined the branch with great seriousness. "You’re absolutely correct, Theo. This belongs to the Woodland Monarch. You must take point."

Theo straightened his shoulders proudly. His exhaustion vanished completely. He had become royalty. He strutted to the head of our group.

Next, Elena discovered a hollowed-out trunk. The opening was large enough for her small frame to fit inside.

"Watch me!" she called out excitedly. "I’ve become a forest guardian!"

Julian reached for my hand. He gave it a tender squeeze. When I glanced at him, the irritation had disappeared from his expression. He observed the children with genuine warmth.

"Fine," he conceded quietly. "Perhaps this isn’t completely awful."

"I warned you," I whispered back.

We ventured further into the woodland. The trail became more challenging.

"Now my legs really do ache," Elena announced, coming to a halt. "Daddy, will you lift me?"

Julian chuckled. "You’re a wolf, Elena. Your legs are powerful."

"Pretty please?" she employed her most persuasive expression.

Julian sighed but lowered himself down. "Climb aboard, little princess."

Elena scrambled onto his shoulders. She perched there regally, gripping his hair. Julian rose without effort. His strength was remarkable. Observing him support her made my heart swell with affection.

We arrived at a babbling creek. Clear water flowed over polished stones.

"Rest time!" Theo declared.

We settled on several large boulders beside the water. I distributed our sandwiches. The mountain air enhanced every flavor.

"I doubt you can strike that boulder over there," Julian taunted Theo while selecting a small stone.

"Watch me," Theo replied confidently.

He launched his pebble. It splashed harmlessly into the water.

"Let me demonstrate," Julian said. His stone danced across the surface several times before disappearing. "Incredible!" the children shouted. "Show us how!"

Julian devoted the next stretch to stone-skipping instruction. He displayed remarkable patience. He carefully positioned their small fingers. When Theo finally achieved success, Julian celebrated more enthusiastically than anyone. He lifted Theo and whirled him around joyfully.

I remained seated on my rock, simply observing them.

This moment made every battle we faced worthwhile.

Julian noticed my attention. He set Theo down and approached me. He settled beside me on the stone.

"You seem content," he observed.

"I am," I confirmed. "This has been my best day in months."

Julian encircled my shoulders with his arm. He drew me closer. I allowed my head to rest against him.

The final portion of our hike proved demanding. The children’s energy flagged once more. Julian eventually carried Theo piggyback while cradling Elena. I shouldered our supplies. We were perspiring heavily, but when we emerged onto the peak, everyone fell silent.

The view was breathtaking. The entire valley spread below us. We could see our pack territory, the winding river, and distant mountain ranges. It was absolutely perfect.

"Incredible," Theo breathed. "We’re higher than the clouds."

"It’s magnificent," Elena agreed.

Julian positioned himself behind me. He encircled my waist and placed his chin atop my head. We remained there as a unit, four souls synchronized on the mountaintop.

"The climb was worthwhile," Julian murmured against my ear.

I understood he meant more than just the mountain. Our relationship resembled this difficult ascent. It was steep and treacherous. But if we persevered, if we refused to surrender, the reward would justify every struggle.

"I love you," I told him, gazing toward the distant horizon.

"I love you too."
