An Owl's Rise
Chapter 475 Brutal Repair Job (2)
Evelyn trudged on with her mind-numbing work.
Shard after shard was dragged closer to the others so that she could put back together whatever broken part of the Aethersphere she was working on.
At some point her thoughts had almost entirely ceased and she just continued to move like a sinner in hell. Forced to repeat the same repetitive task over and over again with no end in sight.
With every shard that she brought together it only made moving the next one more difficult as the added resistance built up.
So even though she had started with the one that was farthest away, the work never got any easier and each one felt like it was close to bringing her to her limits.
For what felt like an eternity, Evelyn kept going.
She had nearly lost herself in the work that both kept her own edge as she protected herself and drained her mental abilities with how monotonous it had all been.
When she had finally brought the last shard together, she did not even realize she had finished at first.
Instead, she reflexively turned around and searched for the next shard to bring in.
However, after several minutes of looking around with her only thoughts being to keep the shield of magical energy around her, she finally noticed that there was nothing left out in the hazy storm.
"I’m done." Evelyn said with a hint of disbelief in a shaky voice.
Tears started to unconsciously fall from her eyes, and though she quickly wiped them away, they just kept coming.
"This isn’t even real. It’s just a manifestation of my consciousness. How am I f*cking crying?"
Unfortunately, her realizing the absurdity of what was going on did not stop what was happening.
Her form constructed within her inner world was a representation of herself, and right now her very soul was weeping in both sorrow and relief.
Eventually, she was able to get her emotional state back to a more stable position and turned her attention back to her work.
While she may have brought together the shards of whatever it was she was meant to repair, that had not restored it to a whole state yet. There was still more to do.
Thankfully the manifestation of the Aethersphere reappeared when she was trying to figure out what to do next.
Somehow it merged with two of the shards and showed Evelyn where she needed to reconnect them.
"I guess I just need to think of this like a game. It’s the same as when I was a kid and played with building blocks." Evelyn muttered to get herself into a better mind set.
What came next was at least more interesting than the previous activity, but it was even more demanding.
Not only was it necessary for her to use magical energy to protect her body, she also now needed precise control and an incurably high output to connect the shards together.
Multiple times she had to take breaks when she was close to running out of magical energy despite her companions providing a constant supply to her body outside.
She was not certain exactly how much magical energy she had used so far, but she imagined it exceeded what she had absorbed into her body to reach her current level.
Perhaps it was even far beyond that. Enough to have brought her up to the peak of the tyrant beast rank or maybe even beyond.
Still, even this immense amount of power was not nearly enough, and it was not long before she felt the energy supply lessen.
For a long time, or at least what Evelyn perceived as a long time as it was difficult to measure the actual movement of time, the magical energy came in slowly.
It was only a bit more than she needed to protect herself from the chaotic storm all around, so her work slowed to a crawl.
At first, she worried that something might have happened to one of her friends, but the true reasons for the absence soon became apparent.
One day there was a sudden massive influx of energy and Evelyn had to struggle to control it all.
If not for the Aethersphere’s passive absorption, it likely would have been enough to kill her. There was a limit to what her body could take at one time after all.
"They must have spent a while gathering a ton of resources. At least now I won’t have to stop as often."
Evelyn felt the reassurance of her companions from the vast qualities of magical energy being given to her and motivation that had been being chipped away at was massively invigorated.
Like a woman possessed, she proceeded with her work. Carefully following the Aethersphere’s instructions.
The work was still not fast by any means, but at least there was still steady progress.
Just like when she had gathered the shards in the first place, Evelyn kept at it with an almost ceaseless drive.
She already knew that stopping to relax was a path to either madness or oblivion.
Always being activate and focusing on the external support from her friends was all that kept her going.
After what felt like several eternities to her, the final shard was put in its place, and the object she had been working on was fixed.
When she moved away so that she could take the entire thing in, she was able to see that it was some sort of three-dimensional magic inscription.
Except it was far more complicated than anything she had ever seen before and its function was completely beyond her.
Even if she was an inscriptionist instead of an alchemist, she doubted that she would have any idea about what this part of the Aethersphere did.
Fortunately, she did not have to wait long to learn what it was she had been working to fix this entire time, as a robotic sounding voice soon resounded through the inner space of the Aethersphere.
"Auto restoration enchantment restored. Beginning restoration process now."
