Chapter 299: Chapter 249: Reportedly Broken

Shen Xin flipped on his siren and sped toward Baili Village.

A wave of fear washed over him in retrospect.

Thank goodness. Before they left, Shen Xin had thought it was unreliable for Li Mo to handle Tian Kui alone, so he’d sent Chen Guo along with him.

Otherwise, Tian Kui really could have caused trouble.

Originally, after getting the call from Liu Baoqing, Shen Xin had planned to go himself.

But as soon as he started to leave, Celestial Skill had followed him with pleading eyes, even hooking her claws onto his pant leg.

Her gaze could have melted a frozen heart.

Shen Xin told her to wait, saying he’d be right back.

He’d said it perfectly clearly, but the moment he walked away, she followed again.

One step from him, one step from her.

Shen Xin was at his wit’s end. After some thought, he brought Tian Kui over and gave him a stern lecture, ordering him to listen to Li Mo no matter what.

If Li Mo came back and reported that Tian Kui had been disobedient, Shen Xin would punish him severely.

The dog definitely understood. He even barked once and nodded, then obediently sidled up to Li Mo, rubbing against his pant leg.

Even after Li Mo led him away, Shen Xin still felt uneasy, which was why he’d had Chen Guo go along.

Looking back now, it was an absolutely correct decision.

If Chen Guo hadn’t been so quick-eyed and nimble, tackling Tian Kui, that dog would have made a huge mistake.

Baili Village was just ahead.

The roadside was packed with parked cars.

These all belonged to the people who had come to demand an explanation.

Nearing the turnoff for Chen Fang’s rescue shelter, an ambulance turned out, its siren WAILING.

Shen Xin quickly pulled over to let it pass.

The ambulance sped by.

Someone was following it, and Shen Xin immediately spotted Ma Chunxin.

Shen Xin parked his car on the side of the road, got out, and walked over to him. "It wasn’t clear on the phone. Was he bitten by one dog or several?"

Not long after Li Mo and Chen Guo arrived at the scene, Shen Xin had received a call from Li Mo.

He said there’d been an incident—Yang Wenqing had been bitten by a dog.

Tian Kui had also nearly charged out to join in biting Yang Wenqing.

Ma Chunxin looked like he had a massive headache. Before he could even speak, someone from the side stepped forward to demand, "That kid is gone. What about us?"

Clearly, these were the people who had come demanding justice.

Others quickly chimed in.

"Yeah, what’s going to be done about our situation?"

"He got bitten by a dog? Serves him right! But let’s not mix things up. The matter of him defrauding us needs to be addressed."

"Where’s Chen Fang? You police, get Chen Fang out here to give us an explanation!"

Veins throbbed on Ma Chunxin’s forehead. He wanted to shout at them to stop.

But this bunch had been causing a ruckus for hours. Their stamina was frighteningly high, and every single one of them was holding up a phone, ready to record at a moment’s notice.

If his tone was even slightly off, someone could maliciously edit the footage, post it online, and fabricate fake news about police intimidation.

With a dark expression, Ma Chunxin grabbed Shen Xin and pulled him toward the rescue shelter.

They hadn’t taken two steps before a cat darted out of the grass by the road.

They still hadn’t rounded up all the cats and dogs.

But they couldn’t worry about that now. No matter how much of a bastard Yang Wenqing was, he was still human. His injury was no small matter.

Shen Xin asked in a low voice if it was serious.

Ma Chunxin shook his head slightly, his expression grave. "The dog bit down on his crotch and wouldn’t let go for anything. I’m guessing... it’s bad."

Shen Xin sucked in a sharp breath, feeling a phantom ache down below.

As they spoke, they arrived in front of the rescue shelter.

Shen Xin saw Tang Xu and a middle-aged man who was probably the village director.

He also saw Hu Guangyu, one of the first officers from the Fangquan Police Station to arrive.

Then he saw Yu Dalin sitting on the ground, wailing as he held his black dog.

There was bloody foam around the black dog’s mouth, and its body was twitching.

Li Mo and Chen Guo were also there.

Chen Guo was holding Tian Kui’s leash, and Li Mo’s right hand was bandaged.

The moment he saw Shen Xin, Tian Kui acted like a mouse that had seen a cat, darting behind Chen Guo to hide.

As if hiding would do any good.

Shen Xin walked up and gave him a hard smack.

"Shen Xin, forget it. It wasn’t his fault. I’m the one who lost my grip on him," Li Mo hurriedly tried to smooth things over.

Ignoring him, Shen Xin slapped the dog again. He pointed at Li Mo, demanding to know if Tian Kui would ever dare to disobey again.

Obedience didn’t just mean listening to him; the dog had to listen to others as well.

Otherwise, how could Shen Xin ever entrust him to anyone else?

Tian Kui lowered his head, not daring to look Shen Xin in the eye.

But he knew to nudge up against Li Mo, even pawing at him lightly, as if to say, ’Say something else!’

Seeing how terrified Tian Kui was, Chen Guo quickly suggested she take him to go round up the stray dogs that had been let out.

She even praised Tian Kui, saying how amazing he was—all he had to do was bark once, and the other dogs would be too scared to move.

Shen Xin nodded. He couldn’t deal with the dog right now.

As for what had happened at the scene, there was video.

Every single one of these people demanding justice had been recording.

The rescue shelter had security cameras too, but unfortunately, they didn’t record audio.

Ma Chunxin was now collecting as much of the recorded video as possible to reconstruct the course of events.

The key question was whether Yu Dalin’s dog had charged out on its own, or if he had ordered it to attack.

No one had been paying attention to him at the time.

Shen Xin also helped with the questioning and reviewing the videos.

A middle-aged woman with drawn-on eyebrows and impeccably maintained skin handed her phone to Shen Xin, ranting that Yang Wenqing got what he deserved for being so arrogant.

She had recorded several video clips.

Including some from that morning.

Shen Xin opened them to get a clearer picture of what happened.

According to Liu Baoqing, Yang Wenqing had been cornered at the rescue shelter shortly after ten in the morning.

The shelter had a large, black, wrought-iron gate.

On camera, a seething crowd of about thirty people could be seen surrounding the gate so tightly you couldn’t get through. With someone leading them, they were loudly arguing with Yang Wenqing, who was inside.

Yang Wenqing was quite young and looked a lot like his father, with a square face and a tall build.

He was wearing a motorcycle jacket, and the camera also caught his motorcycle parked in the yard.

He might look like his dad, but he had his mom’s personality. Faced with such a large crowd, he was still spewing self-righteous justifications.

"Whoever scammed you, go find them! What are you coming to me for? Did I take your money?"

"Let me make this clear: I don’t have any money. If you want to call the cops, go ahead! I’ll tell them the same thing when they get here. Bottom line is, I’m broke."

"What’s with the act, all of you? You’re a pile of dog shit. Every one of you puts on airs, saving a few stray cats and dogs and thinking you’re some great philanthropists. Who the fuck do you think you are?"

He picked up a shovel and banged it against the iron gate.

Shen Xin only heard a few scattered sentences, but it was enough to sense his arrogance.

Later, officers from the Fangquan Police Station arrived and tried to mediate.

But it was useless.

Neither side would back down.

These people who had donated money for charity weren’t going to be so easily dismissed.

In any case, the stalemate dragged on.

Yang Wenqing refused to open the gate and just continued to trade insults with the people outside through the bars.

Later, when the argument intensified, he started letting the dogs out.

In the video, he brutally kicked down the fences of the free-roam enclosures on both sides.

Then he threw open the main gate and, brandishing the shovel, started herding the cats and dogs out.

Over a hundred dogs and several dozen cats scattered in every direction, throwing the scene into utter chaos.

Yang Wenqing swung the shovel, hitting the animals while shouting, "Don’t you all love saving cats and dogs? Love being the good guys? Then why are you all running? Here are your precious cats and dogs, go on, save them!"

He was screaming and shouting, and only stopped when one of the furious officers on duty rushed out and restrained him.

But by then, all the cats and dogs had run out and were everywhere.

The middle-aged woman pointed at her phone and said, "Officer, did you see that? How arrogant is this guy? Just like his mother, a real bad seed!"

’Your mouth is just as ruthless,’ Shen Xin thought to himself. ’You all may have your reasons, but cornering Yang Wenqing for hours and hurling all sorts of insults and abuse isn’t exactly appropriate either.’

Shen Xin fast-forwarded to the part where Li Mo and the others arrived.

That’s when the incident occurred.

It was caught on camera.

In the footage, one of the officers from the station closed the iron gate.

It was to prevent the two groups from clashing.

Once Yang Wenqing released the dogs, the crowd exploded with anger, shouting endless curses through the gate.

Ma Chunxin tried his best to calm them down, but it was no use.

Inside, Yang Wenqing was also yelling defiantly.

Then, Li Mo and the others arrived with Tian Kui.

After agreeing to round up the dogs first, they were getting ready to leave.

At that moment, an officer opened the gate. First, they needed a place to put the dogs they caught, and second, they were preparing to take Yang Wenqing away by force.

Before, it was just arguing—all talk and no action.

But once Yang Wenqing let the dogs out, the scene descended into chaos. Several people fell to the ground, and it nearly turned into a major incident.

Under those circumstances, they definitely had to take him away by force.

He wanted to leave, too.

However, just as he was stepping out of the gate, while Ma Chunxin and the other officers held the crowd back, a dog suddenly shot out from among the people.

It was Yu Dalin’s black dog.

It was incredibly fast. It charged straight ahead, reaching Yang Wenqing in just a few steps. It opened its jaws and bit down on his privates.

The middle-aged woman must have been filming from the edge of the crowd, as the shot was relatively clear.

Yang Wenqing let out a blood-curdling scream and collapsed.

He instinctively kicked his legs wildly, hitting the black dog, but it had bitten down hard and absolutely refused to let go.

The officer next to him finally reacted and rushed over to kick the black dog.

But it was useless. The black dog had a death grip and just wouldn’t let go.

Shen Xin guessed it was partly a death grip, and partly because its teeth were snagged on the fabric of the pants it had bitten through.

Otherwise, with that much bite force, Shen Xin felt it could have torn the whole thing off.

In the end, another officer grabbed the shovel from before and smacked the black dog on the head with it, finally forcing it to release its jaw.

During this, Tian Kui, who was nearby, also lunged forward, dragging Li Mo to the ground.

He seemed to want to bite Yang Wenqing too, but Chen Guo reacted quickly, diving and tackling him to the ground before he could charge.

If Tian Kui had bitten him, it would have been a huge mistake.

"Serves him right," the middle-aged woman snorted.

Yang Wenqing had passed out from the pain.

Even then, the black dog kept trying to charge forward again. It took two more hits from the shovel before Yu Dalin rushed out and grabbed it.

Shen Xin rewound the video and watched it again.

There was no footage of Yu Dalin ordering his black dog to charge and bite Yang Wenqing.

The final outcome would likely be the same either way: he’d have to pay the medical bills. But there was still a legal difference between the dog charging out on its own and Yu Dalin ordering it to attack.

Shen Xin asked for the phones of several other people at the scene to view the incident from different angles.

Finally, he even checked the security footage from the gate, but still couldn’t see any clear sign that Yu Dalin had given a command.

He was in the crowd, but the scene was too chaotic for anything to be captured clearly.

Shen Xin also found a middle-aged man who had been standing next to Yu Dalin in the video and questioned him.

The man replied that he was too busy denouncing Yang Wenqing to notice anything else.

Just then, Liu Baoqing arrived.

His expression was grave.

On the way, he had questioned the subordinate who went to the hospital with the victim. The situation was not optimistic.

Apparently, it was severed.

If his pants hadn’t held it in, it might have ended up in the black dog’s mouth.

A situation like this would, at minimum, be classified as a serious injury.

The kind of serious injury certified by a forensic medical examination.

In a case of intentional injury, that would mean a minimum sentence of three years.

If it resulted in a permanent disability, like urinary dysfunction, the sentence could be five or even ten years.

So, this was by no means a small matter.
