Apocalypse Hoarder: I Have Billions in Supplies
Chapter 126 - 125: The Delivery
Jiang Si took a large amount of carrots and mixed feed out of her interdimensional space. In the extreme cold where food was scarce, these items held an immense allure for a moose.
In her previous life, that was the simplest method people had used to trap moose.
But food itself was a rare resource. To lure a moose, one had to put out dozens of pounds of food at once; any less was simply not enough.
Jiang Si had already planned to tame a mount, and she had plenty of special feed in her space.
Compared to regular grass and vegetables, this feed had an enticing aroma that moose absolutely loved.
Jiang Si glanced at the sky. Thankfully, it wasn’t snowing.
She placed the carrots and feed on the ground, then retreated about twenty meters with Qin Shen before putting down another pile. They repeated this process.
After waiting patiently for a while.
A very large moose slowly appeared in Jiang Si’s line of sight.
Jiang Si’s eyes lit up with excitement.
This was the first time she had ever seen a pregnant female moose.
The moose was very cautious, but it couldn’t resist the temptation of the carrots and feed.
It practically watched itself walk right into the trap.
The closer it got, the clearer Jiang Si could see it.
It was about two meters long and two meters tall, comparable to a huge rhinoceros.
And this was a female; a male would be even larger.
Jiang Si stared at its belly, a little worried it wouldn’t make it to the Icebreaker.
But fortunately, the lure of delicious food was strong.
It followed them all the way through the wind and snow, each step steady and sure, as if on a leisurely stroll while enjoying snacks.
Jiang Si was worried that if it ate its fill, it would stop following. So after it was hooked, she gradually reduced the supply of carrots and feed, making it travel a long distance just to get a small bite.
Just as they were about to reach the Icebreaker, the walkie-talkie got a signal. Jiang Si said to Jiang Linhai, "Dad, open the Icebreaker’s lower bay door. And have some extra hay and feed ready on the side. We’ve lured the moose back."
Jiang Linhai shot to his feet and said excitedly, "Okay, we’ll get right on it." Then, after a moment, he asked, "Do you need me to come help?"
He had thought Jiang Si and Qin Shen would bring back a dead moose, but to his surprise, they were bringing back a live one.
"No need, we’re almost there. Don’t turn on any lights, you might startle it."
"Okay."
Jiang Linhai urgently gathered everyone. They partitioned off a large area in the lower hold to serve as a pen for the moose.
Everyone pressed against the windows in anticipation, trying to spot Jiang Si and Qin Shen’s silhouettes in the pitch-black environment.
After a while, the sharp-eyed Niu Niu said, "Dad, look! Is that big sister and big brother?"
Qin Shen and Jiang Si were still constantly laying down bait. Luring it into the ship’s hold was the critical step, so Jiang Si put out some extra carrots.
The temperature in the lower hold was over ten degrees Celsius. With food and a suitable temperature, the moose, under Jiang Si’s nervously expectant gaze, slowly walked step by step toward the Icebreaker.
Everyone had cleared out the area. The snowcats had been moved and stacked on the second level; worried there wouldn’t be enough space, they dedicated half of the lower level to the female moose.
Jiang Si and Qin Shen followed it in. The moose did indeed walk over to the pile of hay and began eating the other fresh fodder. Jiang Si immediately sent a message to Jiang Linhai, "Okay, close the bay door."
RUMBLE—
The rather loud noise startled the moose.
Jiang Si and Qin Shen didn’t disturb it. It glanced around, but its attention was quickly diverted by the warm, food-filled environment.
After eating for a bit, it grew drowsy and lay down on the ground.
Jiang Si asked Qin Shen, "When do you think it’ll give birth?"
Qin Shen’s face, hidden in the darkness, showed a moment of hesitation before he replied helplessly, "I’m not a vet."
Jiang Si couldn’t help but smile. "Sorry. I’ll go ask my dad and the others."
Jiang Si and Qin Shen went up the stairs. The others, who had been waiting for a long time, immediately crowded around them excitedly. "What does the moose look like?"
"How did you lure it back so easily?"
"It sounded huge! Did we prepare enough fodder for it?"
Jiang Si laughed. "Why don’t we go check the security cameras? Then we’ll know."
Everyone’s faces lit up. "How could we forget about those!"
Even if they hadn’t forgotten, they wouldn’t have been able to pull up the feed anyway. The ship’s complex control console was entirely in English.
As soon as the feed from the lower hold was pulled up, the moose’s astonishing form appeared clearly before them, captured by the infrared sensor.
Niu Niu exclaimed, "It’s so big!"
Shen Baoying, however, frowned and stared at the moose’s belly. "Is it pregnant?"
Jiang Si nodded. "Yes, it’s pregnant. And it looks like it’s about to give birth any time now."
The words had barely left her mouth when the moose collapsed onto its knees and let out a pained cry.
Zhang Qingfang, who had experience delivering piglets, said, "Oh no. It’s having a difficult labor."
Jiang Si frowned. "Grandma, what should we do?"
Zhang Qingfang said, "Don’t panic. Animals have their own instincts. Let’s watch first. If it can’t manage, we’ll go down and help with the delivery."
The moose’s cries grew louder, and Big Black and Little Black paced around anxiously.
Everyone watched, their hearts in their throats.
Ten minutes passed. The moose still couldn’t give birth, even though its cervix was clearly dilated.
Zhang Qingfang made an experienced judgment. "This isn’t working. We have to go help it."
Jiang Linhai was a little worried. "It won’t attack people right now, will it?"
Jiang Si shook her head. "This is when they’re at their most aggressive."
Shen Baoying said, "What if we give it something even tastier to distract it?"
Jiang Si didn’t know either. Suddenly, Zhang Qingfang’s eyes were glued to the birth canal, and she grew excited. "It’s having twins! They’re already coming out! It won’t have the strength to get up. Quick, go help it! You just need to pull the first one out, and it’ll be okay."
Jiang Chengwu frowned. "I’ll go. You stay here."
He was just as experienced at delivering piglets.
Zhang Qingfang nodded. "You’re stronger, so you go. Put on a headlamp and a fluorescent suit."
Jiang Si said, "Don’t worry, Grandpa. If anything happens, we’ll rescue you."
Tranquilizers and guns were ready at a moment’s notice.
"Okay."
Jiang Chengwu, wearing the headlamp, appeared in the moose’s line of sight. It clearly became agitated and tried to stand up.
But it just didn’t have the strength. Its wet eyes were filled with sorrow and pain, as if begging Jiang Chengwu not to slaughter it now.
Seeing that the moose didn’t have the strength to attack, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
Jiang Chengwu walked straight behind the moose and saw that two small calves were stuck in the birth canal. Without hesitation, he chose the one in front, grabbed its hind legs, and began to pull, using a steady rocking motion to work it free.
With a gush of amniotic fluid, the first little calf was finally born.
Everyone was ecstatic. Immediately after, Jiang Chengwu pulled out the second calf.
The placenta slid out next. The mother moose turned to eat it, then immediately began licking the fur of a newborn calf as it shakily tried to stand.
