Chapter 37: The climax

The senses of a superhuman were far sharper than those of an ordinary human, especially William’s, whose beast-like instincts made them even keener.

The instant Leo hesitated, William sensed the incoming danger and twisted away, but he was still too slow.

"Bang"

The bullet grazed past William’s head but his wrist got hit .

Pfttt

Flesh and blood exploded from the impact as his wrist was torn open

"Raaargh!"

William let out a ferocious roar , staggering back several steps .

William turned his head to look at the direction the bullet came

The zombies and the brute had fallen into a state of confusion after the alien’s death.

While William’s attention was on Leo, the Brute’s massive hand shot out and clamped around his injured wrist.

Crunch!

Bones shattered and tendons snapped beneath the monster’s grip.

"RAAARGH!"

Agony surged through William’s body. Acting on pure instinct, he ripped his arm backward, tearing the mangled hand completely free from the Brute’s grasp.

At that moment, the truck, being driven in autopilot mode, made its way toward William and the Brute.

Leo, now sitting on top of the truck’s roof, took out his gun and fired several shots at William’s head.

"BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!"

William staggered back from the impact on his head .

But the Glock’s bullets failed to pierce William’s skull, flattening against the bone.

Leo immediately pointed the sniper at William’s direction and shot him.

But William, sensing the threat the rifle posed, dodged by rolling away .

Leo missed the shot and tried to calculate William’s next tragectory .

But William sensing the unfavourable situation, dived into the horde and disappeared into the sea of zombies .

Leo released a heavy sighed upon witnessing this because he had missed the only and best opportunity at completely finishing off William.

He couldn’t stay here anymore .

Staying in this location any longer was no different than suicide .

He instructed the system to bypass the Brute and get away from the area.

The truck moved near the area where the cards had fallen, and soon the glowing cards on the road were absorbed into Leo’s belt.

While the truck escaped , Leo sitting on top kept looking at the direction where William had disappeared.

With the alien dead, the Brute lost its master. It instinctively locked onto the nearest moving target, which was Leo, and tried to chase the truck.

But its mobility was no match for the truck’s speed.

The horde that remained was also haphazardly attacking William who was hiding inside .

The Brute, unable to catch up to the truck, then turned around to target William.

William, perhaps sensing that after losing a hand he was at a disadvantage and no match for the brute , decided to flee as well.

He hammered the zombies surrounding him ,and planted his foot on the shoulder of a nearby zombie.

Thud !

Using it as a stepping stone , he launched himself into the air .

Before he fell , he stepped on the head of another zombie .

Crunch!

The skull collapsed beneath his weight but William had already jumped again.

Using the zombies , as a stepping stone he disappeared from the horde’s view .

After a while, the zombies, unable to find any targets, scattering around, and soon the area became vacant except for some loitering zombies.

After a while, William appeared in the area again, carrying a metal chain in his hand.

He finished off the zombies that were wandering around, after which he stopped in front of a corpse.

The corpse of Lily.

Elena’s corpse had been completely destroyed earlier when the Brute was swinging his hammer around trying to hit William.

William picked up Lily’s corpse with a loving smile on his face.

"My sweet baby, I am sorry for abandoning you earlier."

Then he pierced the metal chain through Lily’s corpse and tied it around his body in such a way that Lily’s corpse rested on his back.

He adjusted her body carefully, as though afraid she might be uncomfortable.

Then William, with a strange and crazed expression on his face, muttered,

"Now we won’t be separated again. My darling baby, let’s go find your mother next."

Carrying Lily on his back, William disappeared into the depths of Rendell City.
