"Zhou Tian, Zhou Tian, where are you guys right now? Why haven’t you come back yet!" Yang Tianlong shouted into the walkie-talkie.

A burst of static came through.

Right after that came the sound of harsh, ragged breathing.

"Almost there, just one more turn and we’re at the gate. Just now... a horde of Zombies popped out of nowhere on the road and blocked us off. We’re coming from another direction now." Zhou Tian said between gasps, breathing hard.

From the sound of it, he had to be sprinting flat out.

Li Yu stood next to Yang Tianlong, then turned to Li Gang behind him and said, "Fly the drone over and take a look."

Li Gang immediately flew the drone, which had been hovering in the sky, out beyond the school to search for Zhou Tian and the others.

Very soon.

Through the drone feed they saw, under the hazy gray sky, seven or eight people sprinting madly toward the school.

Behind them, hundreds of Zombies were in hot pursuit, howling as they chased Zhou Tian and the rest.

Seeing this, Li Yu quickly told Yang Tianlong and the others to get the school gate ready to shut, and to close it the instant Zhou Tian’s group got inside.

From the drone footage, it was clear Zhou Tian and the others were running noticeably faster than the Zombies; they’d reach the school gate in under two minutes.

Everyone waited at the school gate. They parked the trucks along the wall and stood on the roofs, mounting the machine guns on top, ready to open fire at any time.

A minute later, Li Yu saw Zhou Tian and his group appear at the far end of the road.

They were running for their lives, charging toward the school gate.

Watching how panicked they were, Li Yu turned to Yang Tianlong beside him and asked, "When you went out to clear the Zombies around here just now, did you run into a horde this big?"

Yang Tianlong shook his head and said, "No, it was the same as before."

Li Yu nodded, then watched as Zhou Tian and the others closed the distance from a few hundred meters away and sprinted up to the gate.

Once he saw them pass through the school gate, Li Yu immediately ordered the iron gate shut.

Huang Zheng and the others rushed up and closed the iron gate.

The gate of this militarized school was different from a regular electric rolling gate at a middle school; it was a taller, fully enclosed type.

There were gaps between the vertical bars in the middle.

As the main gate shut, two large trucks behind them drove up to the gate and parked flush against it, forming a second layer of defense.

As soon as they finished, they heard Zombies outside slamming on the gate and roaring.

Without anyone noticing, night had already fallen.

Li Yu’s expression was dark as water. Staring at the bent-over, panting Zhou Tian, he asked, "What happened? I told you to just clear the nearby Zombies. Why’d you go so far?"

Zhou Tian slowly straightened up and said to Li Yu, "Director Li, there’s a small cave over there. We figured there had to be some Zombies hiding in it, so we decided to clean it out. At first it was fine—only a few dozen came out.

But then more and more started rushing out. We couldn’t kill them all. We were almost out of ammo and the Zombies just kept coming.

We never expected that many Zombies to pour out of that cave, so we backed off and took a detour to run back."

Hearing this, Li Yu looked over at the drone controller in Li Gang’s hands.

He saw that outside the wall, more than a thousand Zombies had already gathered.

What the hell.

This wasn’t even a city, not even the center of a small town—just a spot a few kilometers out from a small town.

How could there be so many Zombies!

From the drone’s perspective, he could see that Zombies were still coming in dribs and drabs from the far end of the road.

When the drone climbed higher and followed the route the Zombies were taking, it was clear they all came from the cave Zhou Tian had mentioned.

Li Yu hesitated. He’d been about to order all the Zombies outside the gate to be wiped out.

After all, this place was going to be one of their Transfer Stations in the future. Clearing the surrounding Zombies in advance would be beneficial.

But then he thought about how, whenever it rained, Zombies would still move toward wherever people gathered. Zombies from even farther away would come, and there would be more outside the walls anyway.

Thinking about it like that, there was no need to spend the effort.

It’d waste bullets, and drain everyone’s stamina.

They’d been on the road all day and were already exhausted.

With that in mind, Li Yu told everyone to just stay on alert. As long as the Zombies couldn’t break through the walls, they could ignore them.

On the central sports field, the burning Zombie corpses gave off a thick, nauseating stench, and everyone instinctively stayed away from that area.

A gust of wind blew the smell beyond the walls, and the Zombies outside went wild when they caught the scent.

But faced with the high wall, there was nothing they could do. All they could manage was to claw desperately at the concrete and howl.

Dapao grinned and said, "In the chemistry and biology classrooms in the main building we found microscopes and some measuring beakers and stuff. I figured the Research Room at our base might be able to use this gear."
