Assistant Manager Kim Hates Idols
Chapter 429: Misfit (1)
Spark’s second anniversary live had been the greatest high stimulation roller coaster on earth, swinging back and forth between hot and cold baths, heaven and hell, joy and despair. Baek Haewon and the other Sparklers only had to keep themselves from grinning too hard while enjoying the full course fanservice Spark kept throwing at them.
And then.......
"We’re making a comeback!"
......right at the end of the live, they suddenly dropped a teaser and comeback announcement with zero warning.
Even after the broadcast ended, the momentum refused to die down. All she’d done was say, "Are these guys actually insane? (positive)," and by the time she came back to her senses, two hours had vanished. The teaser had been unusually mysterious too, which only made things worse.
They had released an album all the way into November, and now they were really coming back with a new song in March. There weren’t many idols as hardworking as Spark.
Baek Haewon waited for Spark’s comeback with as much anticipation as her own college ❀ Nоvеlігht ❀ (Don’t copy, read here) entrance. Some people worried that a March comeback meant they were going with a school opening concept, but if Spark’s planning was that obvious, they never would have made it this far.
‘Though honestly, if they really committed to it, that’d be good too.’
With the new year, Spark had officially become a third year idol group. As younger groups debuted, Spark naturally got dragged into ranking wars and performance comparisons where people acted like nobody cared except hate commenters.
It didn’t bother her that much. Spark still had the best results among their debut peers anyway. Their recognition wasn’t even worth comparing. Maybe because the members looked intimidating, there also weren’t any rude juniors trying to act familiar with them despite not actually being close. Seriously, they had no idea how soft and sweet our boys really were.......
Still, from a fan’s perspective, it was only natural to want your favorites to be the best no matter who looked at them. They had done well all this time, so she hoped they’d come back with results good enough to shut down all the nonsense again this round too.
Sorry for being such a spoiled Sparkler. But I believe in you.
The moment the clock struck six, the music video for the new song, “Bright,” finally uploaded before Baek Haewon’s eyes.
In the darkness came the sound of a match striking against a matchbox. The wavering flame transferred onto a candle. Full lips blew out the match, disappearing beyond the smoke.
"─."
The tiny whisper sounded almost like static, or a sound effect with the volume turned low.
Then the profound atmosphere flipped over beneath a rhythmic bass line. A light yet glamorous keyboard melody scattered through the set like reflected light.
Park Juu sat slouched in a heavy chair that looked like it belonged in a classical Western masterpiece. Amid a space and throne decorated with crystal clear jewels like diamonds, only blue haired Park Juu stood out.
Park Juu’s face was pale and flawless. The line separating the shadowed portions was so sharp that he looked less real than a meticulously retouched image.
When the shadow draped across half his face receded, Park Juu seemed to glow even whiter. Pale sky blue embroidery, almost silver in color, adorned his pure white outfit.
"Remember
the promise
we first shared"
As if holding it beneath a light, Park Juu raised a large jewel over one eye. Gray irises reflected through the gem.
Dark gray and pale muted sky blue spread across the screen one after another before the image was swallowed by a faint green glow.
Kang Giyeon stood in the middle of a green garden. Thick glossy leaves surrounded him on all sides. Beyond the trees stood a dark brown lattice window frame resembling an old estate.
Kang Giyeon’s sculpted face stared directly forward.
"You told me
become
my eternal star"
If his deep and dignified voice could be expressed as a tree, it would resemble that sapling with its thick shining leaves.
Every movement drew shadows fit only for the depths of a forest across the dark green robe patterned in black. Kang Giyeon’s hand reached toward a small light green apple hanging from the tree.
"After staying awake
through the long night
I’m coming to you now"
Kim Iwol’s voice spread beneath the scene like red silk. During the choreography shots, every member wore black shirts and suit pants with only slight differences in detail. The impression they gave was even more restrained than the gray suits from “MISSION.”
The intense lighting reflected off carefully styled hair and dark makeup. The shine of black leather gloves and dress shoes shifted along with the camera work.
The instant she saw the crimson velvet curtains and carpet, the golden pillars and chandeliers, Baek Haewon thought of an opera house. The choreography felt like a movement in a symphony.
The instruments surged forward.
"I’ll become your light
and fill you
brilliantly"
The end of the highlight connected directly into the opening of the second verse.
Dark pink color dripped from Kang Giyeon’s lips like paint as he bit into the apple. The stained glass wrapped in rose vines around the window frame gleamed extravagantly.
"If I had to place
a value on my heart"
The mix of green and faint red within Jeong Seongbin’s dark brown eyes resembled flower petals painted in oil. The combination of his soft voice and the layered instrumentals perfectly matched every passing transition.
The pale pink diluted while coloring Jeong Seongbin’s white suit poured down over Kim Iwol’s head.
"Then it would probably be
whatever you call it"
Gift boxes of varying sizes, ribbons, and rows of display cases surrounded Kim Iwol. His sweet vocals blended into the pastel toned background.
Even though his hair was pink again like before, the feeling was completely different. Between the strands, flashes of blue and white appeared and disappeared. The differently colored hair overlapped together, creating a strange iridescence. Blush layered from multiple colors gave off a mysterious atmosphere.
"Decide its value"
A hot pink ribbon unraveled instantly from Kim Iwol’s fingertips.
The box opened, pouring out brilliant light.......
"Carve into it
the most meaningful
word"
......and at the center of that white light source sat Lee Cheonghyeon. Reflected light scattering off the accessories blurred his face. When Lee Cheonghyeon tilted up his chin, his distinct features came sharply into focus.
The light struck his eyes and sparks burst from them.
Like embers.
The crackling flames became candlelight burning atop the candelabra held in a large hand.
Just before the swelling music reached its climax—
"Even if they say
I can’t reach you
that’s fine, to me"
During the brief pause, Choi Jeho stared at the wavering flame before him.
"Just reach out
your hand to me"
Holding an antique candelabra, Choi Jeho approached a massive door.
The moment he pushed it open with force, a hall covered entirely in gold welcomed him. Only after Choi Jeho placed the candelabra onto the shelf by the entrance did the symmetry of the space finally become complete.
"I’ll fill it
forever"
Every time the adlibs and chorus melody alternated, the scenes busily switched between the red stage and the members’ individual spaces. Standing at the far ends of the formation, Jeong Seongbin and Park Juu faced one another while raising their notes.
"Brilliantly"
Choi Jeho seated upon a golden throne. Lee Cheonghyeon opening his eyes between the fingers covering them, his gaze gleaming. Kim Iwol tying a ribbon around his own neck.
"The final words
I said to you"
Jeong Seongbin gazing up at the stained glass. Kang Giyeon lifting the stem of an apple stripped of its flesh. Park Juu pushing a jewel between his lips.
The moments flashed by in rapid succession.......
"Remember them"
At the final moment, when only the fading instrumental remained—
Beneath the chandelier filling the ceiling, Choi Jeho’s lips moved slightly.
"From beginning to end."
It was so small, so low, it almost sounded impossible to hear.......
Yet every nerve focused on the sound caught his words with perfect clarity.
The initial reactions to “Bright” were fairly divided.
≫ The concept’s interesting
It’s definitely not the innocent refreshing thing they usually do, but it’s not blatantly SEXY!!! either
But somehow I feel nervous watching this in public
The boys are covered head to toe but I still feel self conscious
└ The visuals are so overwhelming you just end up staring like wow......
└ Handsome guys keep appearing nonstop and every single one of them is a grown man
≫ There’s not a single weak point in this MV’s color grading or composition......
Every frame looks like a photoshoot
└ Who needs lore when the lore is already written on their faces
≫ Looks like they spent a ton of money but also not like they painstakingly crafted it?
Like it’s simple? The sets just look expensive?
You know what I mean
└ Maybe expectations got too high after “Night”...... sigh
└ “Night” was insanely deliberate in every aspect...... lol
└ Something on the level of “Night” can’t happen twiceㅠ Kim Iwol apparently planned that one as a double title track from the start
└ Right before this they released “Hideout” as a digital single, so having similar quality probably makes it feel more obvious
└└ Yeah exactly. It’s definitely a huge upgrade over “Hideout,” but it kinda feels like they focused too much on making everyone look pretty? Still not bad quality though so I’m satisfied enough~
≫ The song deserves better
Even just looking at the charting, it’s obviously going to ride the momentum from “Hideout” and become a hit, but the MV fumbled it
Half the responses were positive, and the other half felt disappointed.
Even setting aside the posts that blindly trashed it, that was the general mood.
But public opinion slowly began to change once people started realizing the connection between the music video and the song itself.
≫ Wasn’t the MV actually really well made......?
The more I listen, the more perfectly it fits the song
As listeners gradually realized that every directorial choice they’d assumed existed purely for aesthetics was actually closely intertwined with the song’s detailed musical elements.
≫ A perfect visualization of music.
A reminder of what the essential role of a music video is supposed to be.
I’m genuinely blown away.
└ The more you analyze how organically it connects to the song, the more impressive it becomes...... As someone who works in video production, this was an incredibly fascinating MV
└ If sound had colors, this is what it would look like. The way they use intense colors at emphasis points or shift palettes when the melodic flow changes is simply brilliant...... the director’s a genius
≫ At first I didn’t realize because Jeho’s voice was hard to hear in the beginning, but the moment I heard the final lyrics and narration and replayed the song, I finally got it
You said you’d give me everything → Remember the final words → From beginning to end → You said you’d give me everything
An endless cycle......
└ This is why I keep listening through the MV......
└ ㅠㅠㅠㅠRight, Jeho’s voice isn’t in the audio release
└ You need the MV to hear the message → once you start watching the MV you keep replaying the song
└ No wonder the views are climbing insanely fastㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
≫ Guys, apparently the members’ motif gemstones are officially their birthstones
They’re saying they’ll give you everything from the moment you’re born
└ I’m fainting
└ Kim Iwol really turned Spark into jewels stored inside a Sparkler’s drawer
The New Year controversy claiming “Has UA gotten lax?” vanished completely.
Cleanly.
And yet, during what now seemed like it would be a smooth promotion cycle.......
≫ Why hasn’t Park Juu been coming onto BubblePop much lately?
......the signs of dark clouds were beginning to appear.
