Beast World: From Villainess to Cub-Raising Chef
Chapter 149 - 148: Bai Su’s Counterattack
McKoff said, "Someone with no respect for our experiments has no place in this laboratory. Our research doesn’t need a rotten apple like you."
Ever since Bai Su joined the experiment, there had been nothing but trouble in the research lab.
Regardless of the real reason, Bai Su was the one who brought the trouble. That alone was enough to make all the conservative old-timers dislike her.
Bai Su’s expression turned cold. "I’m not the one at fault. Why should I be the one to quit?"
She glanced at Sai’er beside her and said suddenly, "Actually, I have an idea."
All eyes turned to her.
Bai Su made a call, asking Kong Ji to bring her small electric cooking pot, along with some seasonings and the bag of prepared fresh shrimp from the refrigerator.
This was also an item redeemed from the System Mall, and it was very efficient for preparing food.
The items were delivered to the lab.
Bai Su looked at the crowd. "Since you all suspect there’s a problem with my food, I’ll take ten minutes to remake the fried shrimp. You can compare them and see for yourselves."
She quietly instructed Kong Ji to keep an eye on Sai’er and not let him get near the container.
She was now absolutely certain that Sai’er had tampered with the food.
The spoiled shrimp in the container was the evidence of his crime.
Bai Su swiftly plugged in the pot. The ingredients were leftovers from the morning.
It was very quick to make.
She controlled the oil temperature, coated the shrimp in breadcrumbs, and fried them. Once they were golden brown, she removed them and coated them in a special sauce.
The sauce was seasoned with a bit of wasabi, had a yogurt base, and was finished with a drizzle of lemon juice to whet the appetite.
And just like that, a dish of fried shrimp was ready.
She picked up a shrimp, placed it in a clean container, and handed it to Li Yue. She then handed over the other shrimp. "I only trust you. You run the analysis."
A flicker of panic crossed Sai’er’s eyes. "That’s enough! Do you really think our lab is some kind of stage? Does everyone have to waste their time playing house with you?"
Bai Su turned to stare at him, her gaze icy. "What’s the rush? Feeling a guilty conscience?"
Stunned by her glare, Sai’er instinctively took a few steps back. "I... Of course not!"
Li Yue was silent for a moment before taking the food from Bai Su’s hands. "I’ll take a look."
Sai’er paced around anxiously.
’Doesn’t Bai Su know anything? She’s never worked with medical reagents, so how could she possibly know it was tampered with?’
What Sai’er didn’t know was that fresh food and canned food are different.
Canned food contains preservatives. Even if a corrosion accelerator is used to spoil it, there are too many chemical components inside, allowing the corrosion accelerator to be perfectly concealed and impossible to detect.
But fresh food was different.
The ingredients Bai Su bought were all-natural. Freshly prepared, they contained no chemical additives whatsoever.
When a corrosion accelerator was poured on it, there were no other chemicals for it to react with. As long as you were specifically looking for it, it was easy to find.
After finishing her examination, Li Yue gave Sai’er a strange look and sent the results to Flar and the other senior researchers. "They’re definitely different. The sample that was sent over earlier contains a small dose of a corrosion accelerator."
Bai Su crossed her arms and looked at Sai’er. "Do you have anything to say for yourself?"
When Flar and the others saw the results, their expressions soured.
It was true they didn’t like Bai Su, but that was only because they were convinced she was useless to the experiment and had only been placed here to pad her resume.
But Sai’er deliberately destroying a sample to influence the test results was something else entirely.
Sai’er’s face went pale. He quickly explained, "It really had nothing to do with me! I didn’t do it! I really didn’t!"
He then looked at Bai Su. "It was you! You set this trap! You added the corrosion accelerator first, then deliberately lured us in so you could sling mud at me!"
Bai Su couldn’t be bothered to get into a war of words with him. "Perhaps you could all taste the food. I suspect the previous food samples were also tampered with."
Sai’er’s expression changed drastically. He quickly tried to stop them, shouting, "Who would eat that stuff? It might be poisoned!"
It was clear he was truly desperate.
Bai Su looked at the others. "If you just take a taste, you’ll know whether my food has spoiled or not."
Flar was silent for a moment, but he finally stepped forward, picked up a fried shrimp, and put it in his mouth.
A flicker of panic crossed Sai’er’s face. All he could do was hope in his heart that Bai Su’s food tasted awful, no different from something spoiled and rotten.
But he knew that was impossible!
Flar slowly chewed the food. As the flavor exploded in his mouth, an expression of ever-increasing shock appeared in his eyes.
Everyone around him watched anxiously.
McKoff couldn’t take it anymore. "Well? How is it?"
Flar swallowed the food reverently. "Delicious! It’s absolutely delicious! You all have to try it!"
McKoff and the others walked over dubiously. After one bite, they were completely stunned. "This... How can food taste like this?"
Li Yue walked over, picked up a fried shrimp and ate it, then another, and another...
Bai Su looked at them. "So, you can tell just by tasting whether the food has gone bad. I have no reason to lie to you."
All eyes turned to Sai’er.
Flar frowned at the analysis results, then his eyes suddenly widened. "Wait..."
Sai’er’s eyes lit up. He quickly asked, "What’s wrong?! Is there a mistake in the results?"
Flar hurriedly pulled McKoff over. "Quick, come look! Isn’t this data set the same as the data from the food Yarko brought back?"
Hearing this, everyone present couldn’t help but be shocked.
Sai’er’s eyes widened even more. "How is that possible?! Absolutely impossible!"
’Is the thing I refused to admit finally coming true?’
The old researchers stared at the data on the smart-terminal, their eyes growing wider and wider as their excitement became more and more apparent.
"It’s identical! The data is absolutely identical!"
"No, no, the changes in these values are even more pronounced!"
"This must come from the same source as the data Yarko brought back!"
"So the food Yarko brought back was Bai Su’s?!"
From their tone, Bai Su started to get the gist of what they were saying.
’Grandpa Yarco brought my food here for an experiment back then?’
When the senior researchers looked at Bai Su now, their expressions underwent an earth-shattering change. "Miss Bai Su, your food is incredibly helpful to our research."
Bai Su crossed her arms and swept her gaze over the crowd. "Oh? So now you can prove that my food is useful?"
Flar and McKoff had dedicated their lives to experiments; they only trusted data.
Since Bai Su’s food was helpful to the experiment, their opinion of her naturally changed.
Flar looked at her, his expression much more courteous. "That is indeed the case."
Bai Su asked, "Then aren’t you curious why the same food was useless when it was sent over before, but when I make it on the spot today and you test it on the spot, it’s useful?"
"And why did Sai’er try so hard to obstruct things before, insisting that Li Yue analyze the food sample only after she got off work?"
