Beast World: From Villainess to Cub-Raising Chef
Chapter 151 - 150: Yelias, Don’t Be Sad
*
Bai Su got home from a busy day at the lab. After washing up, she came out to find Yelias already in bed, peacefully reading a book. He had changed into his pajamas, clearly having washed up as well.
Bai Su froze for a moment, still not quite used to the schedule where Yelias and Lu Tingyan took turns spending the night with her.
She lifted the covers and rolled into his arms.
Yelias keenly sensed her mood. "Hm? What’s wrong?"
His crisp, cool scent carried pleasant notes of cedarwood.
It was faint, but very comforting.
Her heart aching for him, Bai Su hugged him tightly. "Yelias..."
Her voice was a little hoarse.
Yelias confirmed that her spirits were indeed low and began to release calming pheromones. He wrapped the blanket around her back, bundling her up like a small child as he pulled her into his arms.
Bai Su snuggled securely into his embrace.
Yelias tucked her in, smoothed her hair to make sure his arm wasn’t pinning it down, and only then did he relax. He began to rub the base of her ears, stroking along her rabbit ears to gently massage her head.
Little rabbits loved having those spots rubbed the most.
Sure enough, Bai Su let out a contented hum and unconsciously narrowed her eyes as she began to relax.
The corners of Yelias’s lips curved up. "Can you tell me what happened now? Did someone give you a hard time at the lab?"
Bai Su shook her head. "No, it’s not that. At the lab, I heard people talking about your past."
A flicker of light crossed Yelias’s eyes, but he continued to soothe his little rabbit. "I see."
’It seems all the trouble I went to get her into the lab wasn’t for nothing.’
Still lost in her own emotions, his little rabbit didn’t notice anything amiss. "They told me everything about your past..."
"I feel so sad. It seems like you’re all always protecting me, taking care of me, constantly accommodating me. But I know so little about you all, and I haven’t cared for you nearly enough..."
Yelias found her thoughts both adorable and endearing, making him want to pull her into his very being.
His voice deepened unconsciously. "You silly girl. You’re my wife. It’s my duty to take care of you and protect you. We do all of this willingly because we love you so much."
Bai Su shook her head stubbornly. "Physiologically, you’re males, so you instinctively protect me."
"But emotionally, we’re equals. My heart aches for you, too. I want to protect you, take care of you, and help you carry your emotional burdens."
Yelias was stunned. A tumultuous emotion surged in his chest, leaving him aching and at a loss.
’How could a female ever say that she and a male are equals...?’
Yelias could barely contain the tide of love surging in his heart. He wanted to ensnare her in his web and possess her all for himself.
His spider silk slithered silently beneath her loose pajamas, wrapping around her neck, chest, and wrists, pressing her seamlessly into his embrace.
Through the empathic link of his silk, he felt her emotions, and his actions suddenly froze.
Certain long-buried memories gradually surfaced in his mind.
He rarely ever thought back on his youth.
From the day he was born, his extraordinary talent made him the pride of his entire family.
Other children might have been born with no spiritual power at all, but he was born already possessing Level 3 Spiritual Power.
By the age of five, he could already skillfully enter his Beastification State and maintain perfect control over it.
While other White Spider Beastmen his age needed to be at least fifteen to deftly dissect minuscule objects with their forelimb-scalpels or tie knots with forceps, he could do it at six.
Within the entire Lanton Family, he was undoubtedly the brightest star. Everyone placed high hopes on him, viewing him as the future heir.
"That child Yelias is both beautiful and intelligent. Truly a gift from the Beast God."
"He inherited his grandfather’s talent. Forget the Lanton Family—in the entire medical world, you’d be hard-pressed to find another child as gifted as him."
"He actually mastered his Companion Skill at five and acquired Skill 1 at seven! It’s unbelievable!"
"A child as bright as him picks up everything fast. Even if he hadn’t gone into medicine, he would have succeeded in any field and become a titan of the industry."
He’d heard countless remarks just like these.
Throughout his childhood, he always excelled in every subject, becoming a role model for all the other children in the family.
But at some point, those words of praise became a heavy burden, crushing him to the point he could barely breathe.
"He’s Yelias. Of course he can learn it in a day."
"He gets an S in every subject. Isn’t that normal?"
"He’s a role model for all of us!"
"Every female dreams of becoming his wife."
All that praise carried weight, and in his twentieth year, it morphed into a mountain that finally crushed him.
It was a simple procedure, but because of his mistake, his sister died on the operating table.
Before that operation, he had already performed three surgeries in a row and was mentally exhausted.
But, confident in his own abilities, he went into the operating room anyway.
The moment his sister’s heart stopped, his mind went blank. It felt as if the entire world had frozen still.
’How could I have failed such a simple surgery?’
He couldn’t bear that his mistake had killed his sister, but what truly broke him were the surrounding whispers and the way people looked at him.
"He’s Yelias. How could he possibly make a mistake in such a minor surgery?"
"Impossible. Even my son wouldn’t make that kind of mistake. How could he commit such a basic error?"
"His poor sister... so talented, and such a lively, cheerful young female."
"Do you think... maybe he did it on purpose?"
"Hey... don’t say things like that! You can’t just make accusations like this."
"Otherwise, how could he have messed up like that? I suspect he was afraid his grandfather would pass the Lanton Family inheritance to his sister instead."
"The more you say it, the more it makes sense."
"I never would have guessed. What a load of crap about him being a genius. To think he’d even murder his own sister!"
"That kid is terrifying. No wonder he’s always so cold and aloof. His personality must be completely twisted!"
"I have to tell my kids to stay far away from him. What if they offend him someday and end up being secretly killed too!"
"A disgrace to the family. What bullshit ’genius.’ We were all so wrong about him!"
He didn’t remember how he got through that period.
He fell from heaven to hell overnight. His sister’s death was immediately followed by the suspicions of those around him.
His life had been smooth sailing since birth. Aside from being drugged at a Bai family banquet, he had never faced such a major catastrophe.
During that time, he locked himself in his room, drew the curtains, and refused to see anyone or even face the light.
It felt as if only by doing so could he completely shut out the outside world and all its malice.
The final straw that broke him was the sanction from his kinsmen.
The elders, Flar and McKoff, brought the other respected seniors of the clan to his home, demanding that his grandfather hand him over.
They suspected he had deliberately tampered with the surgery and killed a female of the clan.
These were the elders who had watched him grow up, who had doted on him since he was a child. They had always looked at him with kind smiles, never getting angry even when he mischievously pulled their beards.
But that day, they scrutinized him with cold eyes, as if they were strangers meeting for the very first time.
The shock was too much for Yelias. His mind grew hazy, and he began to wonder if there really was a dark corner in his heart—if he truly had been jealous of his sister and had, as a result, uncontrollably killed her.
His own grandfather protected him, single-handedly arranging to have him sent away from the family.
His grandfather said he lacked worldly experience and told him to go see the world, only to return when the knot in his heart had finally been untied.
He wandered for many years, a vagrant who failed his grandfather’s expectations. He never managed to untie the knot in his heart, and he lacked the courage to face his family, let alone initiate contact with his grandfather.
When he finally returned to the Imperial City, the secret message he received was of his grandfather’s death.
Moreover, his grandfather’s final research project had been credited to someone else, and his own name had been wiped from the list of researchers.
’How cruel the world is.’
Fortunately, his grandfather had left him a most precious gift.
Yelias pulled himself from his memories and gently kissed Bai Su, who was now sound asleep in his arms.
In truth, he had guessed her intentions from the very beginning, back when she was teaching him how to prepare ingredients and forcing him to use a knife.
She thought she was helping him re-acclimate to a scalpel by forcing him to use a knife to "dissect" ingredients every day, but that wasn’t the real reason.
It was her attitude that allowed him to slowly let go of his past.
During the time he spent learning to cook with her, he felt relaxed for the first time.
She would relentlessly nag him, "How can you be so clumsy?"
"You can’t even tell the difference between giant river prawns and whiteleg shrimp!"
"Yelias, you’re hopeless. When you go out, don’t you dare tell anyone you’re my apprentice."
The bullet comments would tirelessly mock him too: [Hahahaha, so even Doctor Yelias has his dumb moments.]
[I finally found something Doctor Yelias and I have in common.]
When he was with Bai Su, it was okay for him to be clumsy.
He could be the klutz who still couldn’t crack an egg with one hand after five or six tries.
He could be the butterfingers who could never pan-fry a fish fillet without it falling apart.
He could even be the kitchen disaster who turned a pan of tofu into a pile of mush.
Bai Su’s presence allowed him to calmly accept that he was an imperfect person.
She would even unconsciously remind him, over and over, that he wasn’t perfect.
Through her actions, she taught him that making mistakes was forgivable, and that it was okay if he couldn’t master everything.
He gradually came to accept his own mistakes and errors.
That was the real reason the knot in his heart had come undone.
She was like a little sun, brimming with vibrant, life-affirming energy.
’How could anyone not adore her?’
Yelias hugged the soft, fragrant little rabbit in his arms tighter, closing his eyes to hide the tears welling in them.
The little rabbit grumbled uncomfortably in her sleep, her hand patting his back in an unconscious, soothing gesture. "It’s okay, Yelias... Don’t... be sad..."
’Silly girl. I’m not sad anymore.’
