Chapter 299: Practical assessment, formations

It’s been three days since their assessment started, and the students have finished all of their theory assessments within the last three days. The instructors had rushed things since they wanted to complete all of the assessments before the end of this week.

Today was the start of the practical assessment, and Alex’s first assessment was on basic formation knowledge, which was taught by instructor Henry.

Due to the nature of formations, instructor Henry had announced that this assessment would be held in an open space outside the lecture building. Alex, along with other classmates who attended the basic formation knowledge class together gathered outside the lecture building early in the morning.

It was a field with well-trimmed grass that was about the size of a basketball court in Alex’s previous world. About 30 students had gathered here and were currently standing behind instructor Henry who was holding a file in one hand.

The students had already been notified before today how the practical assessment would be held and were told to prepare what they might need.

Instructor Henry had told them that they were to create the best formation that they could and he would personally test it.

He would then score them depending on the speed of creating the formations and on the quality of their formations.

Instructor Henry waited until it was 8 before starting the assessment, which was to make sure that everyone had arrived. Since he already told them what they would be doing, he didn’t give any further instructions and asked the students to start right away.

The first student to go out was a young girl of about 17 years old with short brown hair and a Core rank mage. She stepped away from the group of students and started using her mana to draw runes and symbols on the ground.

Everyone watched the girl quietly as she created her formation. With so many people watching her, she appeared slightly nervous and made a few mistakes so she had to start all over again.

Eventually, she finished writing down the runes and symbols after a minute and some seconds before taking out a grade two mana core and placing it at the centre of the formation.

Immediately after she did this, the runes and symbols on the ground let out a soft yellow glow that was fueled by the mana core which she had placed in it. Her formation was quite large, an area of five meters was glowing with yellow light after she placed the mana core into it.

But it wasn’t over yet, the girl stepped into the formation before speaking the command to activate it.

"Defend!"

Right after she said this, the glowing formation released a burst of light that rose a few meters into the air before forming a round yellow barrier around the girl.

Her formation was complete!

The girl stared at instructor Henry from inside her formation while the other students murmured to one another.

"A grade 2 defence formation, not bad." Instructor Henry said while nodding in satisfaction.

He stepped toward the formation and raised his free hand while his eyes changed colour. Brown stars appeared around him and quickly connected into two star patterns, he was casting a Core rank spell.

"Earth spike," instructor Henry mumbled softly after completing his star patterns.

A large earth spike shot out from the star patterns and attacked the girl’s formation.

Seeing the instructor’s spell fly toward her, the girl was frightened and closed her eyes with her palms while letting out a low scream.

Bang!

Alex, Eric, and the other students watched as the earth spike crashed into the barrier. Ripples spread across the surface of the barrier while the earth spike shattered.

In the end, the formation had managed to block the spell without falling apart.

"Good job, you can come out now." Instructor Henry said with a smile while looking at the scared student inside the barrier.

The girl finally opened her eyes and saw that her formation was still intact. She let out a sigh of relief before picking up the mana core beside her. This action immediately caused the yellow barrier to disappear, and the formation deactivated.

The girl returned to join the rest of the students while instructor Henry wrote something down in the file.

"Next student," he said after he finished writing.

A young boy came up next, and he had a confident smile on his face as he started drawing his formation.

"Hey, which formation are you going to create?" Eric whispered to Alex while they watched the boy draw runes on the ground with mana.

"I don’t know yet. Why, are you nervous?" Alex replied with a question of his own.

This made Eric stare at him with a dumbfounded expression.

"Of course, I’m not nervous, I’m going to create a trapping formation. But what do you mean you don’t know which formation you’re going to create?!" Eric exclaimed in a whisper, unable to believe Alex.

"Good for you, I’m still deciding on what to make," Alex replied casually, not bothered at all.

Eric "..."

He was speechless and didn’t know what to say. In the end, he gave up. Alex has always been like that, he blamed himself for not being used to it already.

After some time, the boy finished his formation and placed a grade 2 mana core inside. Unlike the previous girl, the boy didn’t make any mistakes and completed his formation in under forty seconds.

Upon placing the mana core inside, the formation glowed with blue light and then the student said the command to activate it.

"Wake up!"

After saying the command, the blue glow of the formation intensified but nothing happened after.

The rest of the students stared at the boy with confused faces, did his formation fail?

On the other hand, the boy had a proud smirk on his face after activating his formation. Only Alex and instructor Henry knew what the student had created.

’Impressive,’ Alex thought inwardly as he stared at the blue formation on the ground.

Instructor Henry rubbed his beard with a smile, a look of satisfaction on his face.

"Not bad, not bad." He mumbled and approached the student.

Immediately after he got too close to the formation, a blue mana tentacle rose from the formation and attacked him.

Instructor Henry easily dodged it but more appeared and shot at him.

He continued to dodge them with each and soon reached the student, he didn’t stop there and proceeded to take out the mana core, directly deactivating the formation and causing the blue tentacles to disappear.

Instructor Henry then handed the mana core to the student and told him to go back.

While the students returned, the others stared at him with shocked faces. The appearance of those blue tentacles had caught them off guard; they definitely wouldn’t have been able to dodge so many if they were in the instructor’s place.

’A defensive formation that automatically attacks anything that comes close, the command is a bit cringe, though,’ Alex thought.

Just like that, more and more students went forward to make their formations; some made mistakes due to nervousness or other reasons, but they all successfully created their formations in the end.
