Betrayed in the Apocalypse? I'll Plunder My Way to the Top
Chapter 107: Damn, Do You Have to Be Like This?
Jason Sterling stared at Sue Lawrence’s movements.
After all, the two of them had been close. As far as he knew, Sue Lawrence didn’t know how to ski at all. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
So he waited. He waited for Sue to come ask for his help, just like she used to. He expected her to ask him to help her walk back, or maybe even to have him lead her while she skied.
But she didn’t.
Sue nimbly stood up straight and moved forward with ease. She didn’t just avoid falling—she didn’t even wobble.
Jason Sterling was suddenly a little disappointed, but his eyes still followed Sue, fixated on her back as he fell in line right behind her.
Sue Lawrence didn’t know how to ski?
No problem. She had a plundered Superpower.
’B Level skiing. This Skill is really useful.’ She didn’t need to ski like an Olympic champion, anyway. All she had to do was glide, maintain her speed, and not fall down.
In this vast snowfield, no one knew which way to go—not even Silas Hawthorne. The entire group relied on Sue Lawrence to lead the way. For a moment, even Theodore Frost wondered if Sue had some kind of spatial Superpower. Otherwise, how could her sense of direction be so good?
To him, everything looked the same in every direction, yet she was somehow able to find the way.
Even though everyone was skiing as hard as they could, their progress was slow. They were towing three injured people, and the terrain was full of ups and downs. Going up the snowy slopes was a problem, though going down them was fast.
Still, their speed couldn’t match the robot-pulled sleds. A journey that would have taken only two or three hours by sled had now stretched to over three hours of skiing, and they still hadn’t reached their destination.
"How much farther?"
The person behind Dominic Trent couldn’t help but complain.
"It’ll be dark in less than two hours."
In this polar apocalypse, time was strangely consistent across the globe. There was no place where it got dark at 4:30 PM, and no place where it was still light at 8:00 PM. The sun rose at 6:00 AM and set at 6:00 PM everywhere, from one pole to the other.
It was already almost four o’clock. In two hours, it would be dark.
If they couldn’t find shelter or get back to the base before nightfall, they would likely freeze to death out here.
And so, someone finally couldn’t hold back their doubts.
"Do you even know where you’re going?"
"What if this is the wrong way? Back at that tree, shouldn’t we have gone in the other direction?"
"I think so too. The base should be over that way."
The complaints caused everyone’s pace to slow down noticeably. Sue Lawrence spoke coldly, "Pick it up. We’re already slow enough. It seems like you want to be stuck out here after dark. I, for one, do not."
"You..."
Everyone was a little angry, but suddenly a young soldier pointed to a tall billboard ahead. "I’ve seen that sign! We must be close to the base!"
The few complainers froze, their spirits suddenly lifting.
"For real?"
"Are you sure?"
"Aren’t billboards like that everywhere? Ads are common."
"Yeah, yeah, you’re probably mistaken."
Though their tone was still skeptical, the group’s pace clearly picked up.
Theodore Frost also took a look.
With his military background, he immediately nodded. "I remember this billboard too. The main thing is its color. Even with the ice, its bright red background is still visible. And there’s a chip in the top-left corner. I remember that very clearly."
People like them were specially trained to memorize things, especially landmarks along a route. They remembered every single one with perfect clarity.
The ice on other buildings was too thick to see any details, but this billboard was truly distinctive.
The main reason was the sheer penetrating power of the color red. Soon, many of the soldiers in their group chimed in with agreement.
The few who had been doubtful were stunned. Then, a couple of them finally picked up a faint signal in their helmets.
This proved they were very close to the base.
Expressions of delighted surprise appeared on many faces, and their speed increased even more.
Finally, they made it back to the base before sunset. It was exactly 5:30 PM, half an hour before dark.
The moment they saw the base gates, everyone began to cheer. Theodore Frost wanted them to keep moving, but the civilians wouldn’t listen to his commands. He had no choice but to cut their ropes and send the injured in first.
"Thank God, we’re finally back!"
"We made it! WAHHHH, Mom!"
Everyone was cheering loudly, but Sue Lawrence was quite calm. She knew she would make it back. Without a word, she entered the base gates.
Jason Sterling followed close behind. After passing through the three layers of protective doors, he saw Sue Lawrence already taking off her cold-weather suit. He quickly walked up, removing his helmet as he asked, "You have a Superpower?"
He didn’t notice the complexity in his tone, but Sue did. She nodded indifferently. "What about it?"
"You..."
’Aren’t you useless? Don’t you have a Superpower?’ he wanted to ask. But he couldn’t bring himself to say it. He had been reborn, but Sue hadn’t. Was he supposed to tell her that because she was useless in her past life, they had abandoned her, and she had died in a horde of zombies?
Realizing that Sue Lawrence was now useful, Jason Sterling’s attitude toward her had done a complete 180.
"Are you free? Let’s get a meal together."
Sue Lawrence actually laughed at that. Before she could respond, Elliot Lawrence stepped between them and said coldly, "She’s not!"
With that, he pulled Sue away, muttering, "Does he have any shame at all..."
Whether he had any shame was debatable, but Jason Sterling kept staring at Sue’s back, his gaze lingering long after she had disappeared from view.
’Wyatt Sterling was right,’ he thought. ’I shouldn’t have treated Sue like that. At the very least, I should have tried to keep her on my side.’ He was truly filled with regret now, but it was useless. She wanted nothing to do with him.
And his expression was seen by Tiana Lynch.
She had come out to greet Jason Sterling, happy and excited, only to witness such a scene.
Jason Sterling... actually invited Sue Lawrence to eat with him?
Ha. It wasn’t like they were in the normal world, where they could just go out to a nice restaurant for a good meal.
’Sue Lawrence!
What on earth happened during this mission?’
Tiana Lynch’s expression was ugly, but she still grabbed Dominic Trent and asked instinctively, "What happened?"
Dominic Trent was also troubled. He had gotten his things back—no one had taken his skis or tools—but his hoarded food was depleted. The others had eaten it, and it’s not like he could make them spit it back out, could he?
He knew what was on Tiana Lynch’s mind. Thinking about the trouble he’d gotten into because of Sue, he perked up and pretended to complain, "Didn’t you say Sue Lawrence didn’t have a Superpower? You really screwed me over. Sue has a Superpower! She’s not useless at all! Tiana Lynch, you lied on purpose. What were you planning?"
"What?"
Tiana Lynch was stunned. "Are you talking about her Healing Skill?"
Dominic Trent was even more stunned. "What? She has a Healing Skill Superpower, too?"
’Too???’
Tiana Lynch: ’!!!!’
’Fuck!’
