Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Dead or Alive

The hair on the back of Maeve Walsh’s neck stood on end as a bone-chilling cold shot up her spine. She sensed someone approaching from behind. The door was right in front of her, and beyond it, the gunwale led to the fore and aft decks.

And Jason Sterling and Tiana Lynch were on the deck.

She would never let Maeve Walsh set foot on that deck.

Maeve Walsh had just managed to step over the threshold, half her body out on the gunwale. The moment she hastily turned back, her pupils contracted. Her eyes flew so wide they looked like they might split, filled with nothing but the sight of Sue Lawrence’s face—inches away and utterly devoid of warmth.

"You... H-how are you here? You’re supposed to be..."

"Supposed to be at home, watching over that little brat, waiting for the apocalypse to arrive and leave me for dead?"

Sue Lawrence suddenly smiled. It was a faint smile, but her eyes held not a trace of warmth.

Before Maeve Walsh could utter a single word, Sue raised her leg in a clean, high kick. Empowered by her C Level Sanda Skill, it slammed heavily onto the crown of Maeve Walsh’s head, the impact stunning her instantly.

Seizing the opportunity, Sue Lawrence clamped a hand over her mouth and brutally slammed her against the gunwale’s icy railing. Her other hand locked onto Maeve’s neck, knuckles turning white from a grip so powerful it threatened to crush her throat.

Maeve Walsh choked, unable to breathe, the whites of her eyes showing. She mustered all her strength to force out a muffled question, "Sue Lawrence... what the hell are you doing?"

Sue Lawrence leaned in, her lips brushing against Maeve’s ear. Her voice was as soft as a whisper, yet it was laced with a bone-deep chill. "To collect the debt you owe me, of course."

"I don’t owe you..."

Maeve Walsh tried to stall for time, but Sue Lawrence gave her no such chance. The Bone-cutting Knife stabbed upward from Maeve’s lower abdomen into her chest cavity. This time, Sue was aiming for the heart.

"You..."

The familiar motion made Maeve Walsh’s eyes go wide as she stared fixedly at Sue.

"That’s right. I’m a Reincarnator, too." Sue Lawrence stared at Maeve Walsh’s face, watching every expression that crossed it: shock, terror, and utter disbelief.

"I know everything you all plotted, Maeve Walsh. If it weren’t for me, you would have died in that alley. It would have been one thing if you simply didn’t repay my kindness, but you repaid it with malice. But that’s not your biggest misfortune. Your biggest misfortune was awakening your Superpower early—and a Space Ability, at that."

Maeve Walsh’s eyes widened in terror. ’How does Sue Lawrence know everything?’

But she no longer had the chance to speak. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. Sue Lawrence had already activated her Superpower: Yours is mine!

[Skill Activated: What I Loot is Mine. Acquired [Storage Space] (A Level)!]

Sue Lawrence’s lips curled into a smirk. She dragged the body back into the cabin, found an empty room, and shoved the corpse inside. After closing the door, she stripped off Maeve Walsh’s coat and shoes, then quickly took off her own down jacket and snow boots. Underneath, she was wearing a wetsuit.

She stuffed all of these items, along with Maeve Walsh’s body, into her Storage Space. She immediately put on Maeve Walsh’s down jacket, shoes, and hat, cleaned up every trace from the floor, and headed back outside.

Standing on the gunwale, she heard Jason Sterling’s voice from the deck. "What’s taking Maeve so long to get back?"

Tiana Lynch said, "Let’s go check on her then."

Footsteps sounded soon after. Sue Lawrence wasn’t in a hurry; she simply waited, her Perception and Observation Power stretched to their absolute limits. She tracked their movements and line of sight. The instant her Perception confirmed she had been spotted, Sue Lawrence took a decisive leap off the gunwale.

"AHHHH!"

Tiana Lynch’s scream rang out instantly. Jason Sterling was shocked as well, shouting, "Maeve, what are you doing?!"

Maeve Walsh had jumped into the sea.

She had plunged into the water with a SPLASH, right in front of them.

Tiana Lynch frantically called for help, while Jason Sterling immediately dialed the marine police to report the incident and request a rescue.

’Maeve Walsh can’t die! She’s carrying so many of our supplies! Not to mention the fuel we just got today, and that Paramount Raider we worked so hard to acquire!’

Jason Sterling was going mad. Why on earth would Maeve Walsh suddenly decide to jump into the sea? Just moments ago, she had been strutting around, boasting that she’d be able to do whatever she wanted in the apocalypse. How could someone like that commit suicide?!

’What the hell is going on!?’

Jason Sterling felt like his luck had been absolutely rotten lately.

At that moment, however, Sue Lawrence had already shed the down jacket and shoes. She activated her Skills: [Underwater Breathing (Ten Minutes)] and [High Efficiency Swimming: I’m a Happy Little Fish]. With a single stroke, she propelled herself several meters away, quickly leaving the tour boat behind.

She retrieved her hidden diving equipment, stored it in her space, and sped toward the beach where she had first entered the water.

Back on the deserted beach, a thin layer of snow had already accumulated. She watched the snowflakes cover her footprints as she walked, then quickly returned to her hidden car. She started the engine and blasted the heat on high. Only then did she peel off her wetsuit, dry herself off, and wrap herself completely in another ankle-length down jacket.

She didn’t leave right away. Instead, she took two large gulps of hard liquor and poured a little more into her hands, vigorously rubbing them together and on her ears. After warming up for a while, a prickly, needle-like pain returned to her frozen fingers, and her ears were finally warm. Hearing the wail of police sirens fade as they headed toward the harbor, she finally started the car, activated her [A Level Anti-Reconnaissance] Skill, and sped away.

Behind her, back at the harbor, the fuel tanker had descended into chaos.

Someone falling overboard had put everyone on the ship on edge.

"This is a shallow area, and the waves aren’t rough today. We’ll definitely find her, so don’t panic."

The captain tried to soothe Jason Sterling and Tiana Lynch, but both of them were frantic.

Maeve Walsh’s Storage Space held all of their supplies, including the crucial gasoline and the Zenith. They had to find her, no matter what!

"I want her found, dead or alive!"

Jason Sterling gritted his teeth.

Tiana Lynch was stunned. "A c-corpse?" she stammered.

’What’s the use of a corpse? If she’s dead, can her Space Ability still be used?’

Jason Sterling stared intently at the snow-dusted surface of the sea, his teeth clenched. "I’ve heard there’s a type of Superpower that can plunder another person’s. As long as we find Maeve Walsh and then find a Raider, we can still make use of this Storage Space!"

He refused to accept this!

’Twenty days of painstaking work to hoard all these supplies, and now it’s all gone! Gone in an instant!’

Jason Sterling paced agitatedly on the deck, staring at the rescue boat with an expression of utter desperation.

Even the marine police had been mobilized, all for one rescue.

Divers suited up in cold-water gear and entered the water to search. An hour later, all they had found was the down jacket Maeve Walsh had been wearing and one of her shoes.

"Where is she? The person!!"

Jason Sterling was on the verge of a breakdown. He wanted the person—a corpse would do!

A member of the rescue team spoke in a low voice, "Sir, it’s been over an hour. The situation isn’t optimistic. You should prepare yourselves..."

Jason Sterling screamed hysterically, "You still have to find the body! The body!"

’Inside her space was everything! Everything!!’

’His thirteen million, plus that other 1.4 million, he had poured it all into this! All the supplies needed to survive the apocalypse—it was all in there!’

"No matter what, you have to find the body!"
