Betrayed in the Apocalypse? I'll Plunder My Way to the Top
Chapter 50: There’s a Show to Watch
Sue Lawrence watched quietly as Mia Keller sent out one text message after another.
It was best for Mia Keller to bring this up. As someone outside their little clique, Sue couldn’t say a single word about it.
’At least, I have no intention of exposing myself just yet. Nothing is more satisfying than hiding in the shadows, letting your enemies know nothing, while you grow stronger in secret.’
Now that Maeve Walsh’s disappearance had been brought to light, Jason Sterling’s group was probably on the verge of imploding.
Ha. The apocalypse was almost here, but the supplies they had all hoarded were gone. Even if Jason Sterling told the truth—that Maeve Walsh had disappeared after jumping into the sea on her own—how many people would actually believe him?
’In any case, if it were me, I wouldn’t believe a single word of it.’
’Jason Sterling’s camp is probably in chaos!’
’Just thinking about it makes me happy. I’d love to see it unfold in person, heh heh heh!’
"It’s no use. No one can get in touch with Maeve Walsh!"
Mia Keller looked up abruptly. "Adam Zane said he’s going to ask Jason Sterling about it. I’m planning to go too. Sue, want to come with?"
Sue Lawrence: !!!
’Could this be any more perfect? It’s like being handed a pillow the moment you feel sleepy.’
’I was just thinking I wanted to watch the show~~~’
"I think I’ll pass."
She shook her head, then added, "But I can give you a ride. In your state, you probably shouldn’t be driving."
’That’s right, that’s right. I’m just giving you a ride. I’m definitely not going to spectate, hahaha!’
Mia Keller was touched. "You’re a good friend. Thank you!"
She eagerly put on her shoes, grabbed her jacket, and headed out.
’Can’t be discharged today? No, no, no, we’re not getting discharged. We’re just going out for a walk.’
Sue Lawrence got into her car with Mia Keller in the passenger seat, and the two of them set off.
When they arrived, Sue Lawrence paused for a moment. Wasn’t this the same neighborhood where her family lived? As for this particular villa, it was situated on a small hill, with a perfect view of her family’s house.
Sue Lawrence: ...
’Good thing I came along. Otherwise, I never would have known that Jason Sterling and Tiana Lynch had actually bought a villa here to use as their base.’
’The location couldn’t be better. First, they can watch our house. Second, it’s very close to the abandoned mine. It’s truly a prime spot.’
"Sue, don’t get too close. Just wait for me here."
About thirty or forty meters from the villa, Mia Keller got out of the car and walked slowly toward it.
Sue Lawrence thought for a moment, parked the car in a hidden spot, and got out as well.
She first took out the private investigator’s phone and used her B Level Network Technology to access the villa’s security cameras. After confirming the cameras were still operational, she quickly identified their blind spots. Soon, an infiltration route was planned out.
Sue Lawrence smiled as she looked at the route.
’To prevent intruders, Jason Sterling aimed all the cameras at the ground, leaving the ceilings as blind spots. Isn’t this the perfect opportunity for me to sneak in?’
With that thought, she activated a Superpower she had just acquired: [D Level Chain Tricks].
[D Level Chain Tricks: Specifically for screwing people over, allowing the user to always remain blameless. Effect: D Level, weak.]
’The effect may be weak, but it’s better than nothing.’
The corners of Sue Lawrence’s mouth curled up as she activated the Skill [Gecko’s Climbing Ability] and slowly climbed a large tree.
The thick branches of the tree extended all the way to Jason Sterling’s new villa. She silently applied [Gecko Disguise] to herself and slowly pressed against the villa’s exterior wall.
Following her predetermined route, she crawled slowly across the ceilings and soon located Jason Sterling and his group.
The study on the second floor was currently packed with people—all members of Jason Sterling’s little clique.
After locating the group, Sue Lawrence moved to the adjacent room. It was a small conservatory connected to the study by a narrow, plant-filled corridor. She silently vaulted onto the balcony, pushed open the glass door, and slipped inside. Concealing herself among the plants, she quickly approached the study and hid in the shadow of a tall, dense dieffenbachia. Aided by her Gecko Disguise and masked by the plant’s shadow, she was impossible to spot, even if someone stared right at the area.
Sue Lawrence calmly began to eavesdrop.
"Jason, where the hell did Maeve Walsh go?"
Adam Zane demanded, his temper flaring. He was known for being hot-headed. After a few of them had conferred privately and realized Maeve Walsh was truly missing, he had been the first to show up here.
Tia Norris also frowned. "Jason, our supplies are supposed to arrive today at the latest. If Maeve Walsh doesn’t show up, where are we going to store everything?"
Donovan Lawrence spat viciously. "Fuck, Jason Sterling, don’t tell me you’re planning to take all those supplies for yourself."
Sue Lawrence: ???
’Wait, why is Donovan Lawrence here?’
’Didn’t he get arrested?’
Jason Sterling’s brow was deeply furrowed. "Take them for myself? Do you think I can survive the apocalypse alone? Donovan Lawrence, the only reason you’re sitting here bossing me around is because I spent money to get you out. If I really wanted everything for myself, why would I have bothered bailing you out?"
Donovan Lawrence’s brow tightened. Although he still suspected Jason Sterling was planning to keep the supplies for himself, he couldn’t say anything more to his face.
Miles Finch pressed his fingers to his temples, his tone laced with impatience. "If you’re not planning to take everything, then where is Maeve Walsh? The apocalypse is only a few days away. Tell us, where the hell did she go?"
Jason Sterling’s expression turned incredibly grim.
’Where did she go?’
’She jumped into the sea and vanished, taking her Space Ability and everything inside it with her. Could he say that?’
’He couldn’t say a single word!’
’With all these people cornering him at his door, if he told the truth, they would just think he was lying, that he wanted to keep everything for himself!’
’But he really didn’t! He was a victim too! A victim!’
Jason Sterling was on the verge of a breakdown, but he couldn’t utter a single word of the truth.
"I’m looking for her too!"
Jason Sterling pinched the bridge of his nose. He urgently needed a scapegoat to resolve this mess.
"The other day, we went to the docks together and picked up the Paramount Raider and the gasoline. After she went home, I couldn’t get in touch with her again."
Donovan Lawrence grew anxious. "Then why didn’t you say so earlier? Why did you wait until we came here to ask?"
"I just thought she might have gone off to hoard more supplies somewhere! How was I supposed to know she’d pull a disappearing act!"
Jason Sterling’s expression darkened as he abruptly changed the subject, suddenly looking at Donovan Lawrence. "Could Sue Lawrence have done it?"
He had decided to pin the blame on Sue Lawrence. After all, besides her, he couldn’t think of a more suitable person to take the fall.
Donovan Lawrence was startled. "Sue Lawrence?!"
Mia Keller frowned. "What does this have to do with Sue? Don’t make baseless accusations!"
Donovan Lawrence’s face instantly darkened. "If she really did it, then she must have been reborn too. Fuck. If I had known when I saw her the other day, I should have just killed her..."
In the shadow of the dieffenbachia, Sue Lawrence suddenly smiled. She raised a hand to her waist, where a Bone-cutting Knife was tucked away.
