Betrayed in the Apocalypse? I'll Plunder My Way to the Top
Chapter 70: Dear, How About Dropping Some Gear?~
Tiana Lynch was brimming with confidence. After all, her Superpower could be called invincible. No one could escape her eyes; as long as she wished, she could see everyone’s Ability.
In her past life, all those big shots had hidden their Superpowers, refusing to let anyone see them. But now, no one could even dream of hiding them from her.
Tiana Lynch activated her Superpower almost subconsciously, the corners of her mouth lifting into a smirk, certain of victory.
But just as she was about to see everything clearly, she suddenly felt something pierce her eyes. The searing pain made her let out an unbearable scream, "AHHH!!!"
A bloodcurdling scream suddenly echoed at the entrance of the quiet air-raid shelter. Everyone instinctively looked over. Even Jason Sterling frowned. ’Silas Hawthorne is speaking. Does Tiana Lynch have any sense of propriety? Does she have any manners at all?’
He was filled with disgust, but then he saw Tiana Lynch collapse to the ground, clutching her eyes. Blood was trickling out from between her fingers.
"AHHHHHH! It hurts! My eyes, my eyes!!"
’It hurts so much! It’s like a needle has been viciously stabbed into my eyes. The pain is so deep it feels like it’s reached my bone marrow, as if it’s pierced straight through my brain. It hurts so much I want to die!’
Tiana Lynch was on the verge of a breakdown, wailing, "My eyes."
Everyone jumped in fright, completely clueless as to what had just happened. Jason Sterling lunged forward and carefully helped Tiana Lynch up, only to see her tightly shut eyes bleeding.
"Tiana? Tiana?!"
Jason Sterling panicked. "Are you okay, Tiana?!"
’She’ll be okay, right? This won’t affect her A Level Superpower, will it? Tiana Lynch, if you lose your eyes, you’ll be completely useless!’
Jason Sterling was extremely worried. Tiana Lynch didn’t dare open her eyes, just crying out, "Jason, it hurts so much!"
"Doctor! Doctor!"
Jason Sterling scooped her up into his arms and hurriedly turned back. "Tiana, I’m taking you to see a doctor."
Watching the two of them leave, everyone was plunged into a state of panic, unable to stop themselves from murmuring in low voices.
"What on earth happened?"
"Why did her eyes suddenly start bleeding?"
"Is there radiation outside? We’re right at the entrance!"
As they discussed it, no one dared to step outside for a moment.
Silas Hawthorne’s gaze darkened. ’This Tiana Lynch is just a liability,’ he thought. ’It’s just low temperatures outside, but she’s caused such a scene that everyone thinks it’s radiation. Now no one dares to go out.’
But before he could speak, Victor Keller, covered in a sheen of sweat, walked in through the low-temperature airlock.
The temperature difference between the inside and outside was significant. As soon as Victor Keller entered, he brought a gust of frigid air with him, making someone standing nearby sneeze.
"Reporting! The sleds are ready!"
Silas Hawthorne turned his cold gaze on the murmuring crowd. "If it were dangerous outside, why is Victor Keller fine? Don’t blame others for your own issues! For this mission, all we need is for everyone to help bring back the supplies. Now, get your anti-cold suits on. Let’s move out!"
Theodore Frost gave a wave, and someone immediately brought over the anti-cold suits.
Sue Lawrence took a look. They were different from the anti-cold suit she had bought herself. This one resembled a Liquid Nitrogen Anti-cold Suit but was slightly different. It wasn’t as bulky; in fact, it looked more like an inflatable piece of clothing. At least it wouldn’t hinder walking, grabbing, or even running and jumping.
Elliot Lawrence noticed too and couldn’t help but ask in a low voice, "These are a bit different!"
Sue Lawrence nodded and replied quietly, "They might be new models developed by the state."
’If they could build shelters in advance and develop robots, AI, and large sleds ahead of time, then creating a new type of anti-cold suit wouldn’t be impossible.’
Besides, she was completely convinced that Silas Hawthorne and his people were fully capable of withstanding extreme cold, and even extreme heat.
Sue Lawrence started to hesitate. Should she take her people back to her own mining cave, or should she stay in the air-raid shelter?
After all, no matter how many supplies an ordinary person like her could gather, it couldn’t compare to even the tiniest scraps of high-quality goods that fell through the fingers of the powers that be.
’Tsk, I’m so jealous. I really want to know what other good stuff Silas Hawthorne has up his sleeve.’
Sue Lawrence stared at Silas Hawthorne, her gaze unabashedly filled with the envy of wanting something she couldn’t have.
Elliot Lawrence immediately misinterpreted it as adoration.
"..."
’My sister... is into guys like that??’
Elliot Lawrence sized him up and down. ’Nope, not good enough for my sister. He’s like a block of ice, doesn’t even know how to smile. Living with a guy like that every day would freeze my sister to death.’
So...
He pulled Sue Lawrence away directly. "Let’s go, let’s go, time to get changed."
To go outside, they had to put on the newly issued anti-cold suits. Elliot Lawrence pulled her along to get changed.
However, once the suit was on, Sue Lawrence was even more certain: this was definitely a new invention, a brand-new model!
The suit felt like wearing an extra-thick down jacket. It truly didn’t impede movement at all, and its heat retention was incredible. She was actually starting to sweat from the warmth. The only downside was that the thing wasn’t breathable...
’Oh well, not being breathable is a good thing. If it were, I’d freeze to death.’
"I’m ready."
Elliot Lawrence looked over at her. Sue Lawrence was also ready. Everyone walked out, each holding a helmet identical to Victor Keller’s.
Silas Hawthorne scanned the group and nodded. "The helmets are climate-controlled. The glass layer blocks the cold, won’t obstruct your vision, and won’t fog up. There’s a walkie-talkie inside; you can change frequencies to choose who you talk to. Alright, let’s move out."
Sue Lawrence hugged the helmet, suddenly not wanting to give it back. ’Can I really not keep it? Can’t they just give me one? Just one...’
’But that’s impossible!’
She blinked regretfully, resigned to her fate, and put on the helmet, following Victor Keller out of the first low-temperature airlock.
Watching them leave, Theodore Frost couldn’t help but say, "You know, I get the feeling Sue Lawrence has a thing for you. That stare of hers was so intense, like she wanted to eat you alive."
Silas Hawthorne: "..."
"You’re mistaken."
All he saw was a covetous gaze, one that desperately wanted him to drop some loot.
Outside the low-temperature airlock was a second door. This one was translucent, allowing them to see the tall, insulated alloy door beyond. As they passed through the translucent door and stood before the alloy one, everyone fell silent. When the alloy door opened, the frigid air from outside swept in like a thick bank of fog.
If you only looked, you might mistake it for the dense, inescapable steam from a steamer basket. But it wasn’t. It was, in fact, the frigid air of extreme low temperatures.
Under a tent outside, people were still registering, but the number of rescuers today was much lower. Sue Lawrence knew that in the future, it would only get smaller.
"Current temperature: minus fifty-six degrees Celsius!"
Victor Keller shouted out the number on the industrial thermometer. Many people flinched, but Sue Lawrence remained expressionless.
Minus fifty-six degrees Celsius would be considered an extreme low even in the northernmost parts of Ursia. But for this extreme cold apocalypse, this temperature was just child’s play.
Soon it would drop below minus sixty, then minus seventy, all the way down to minus one hundred degrees Celsius...
’That... that is when the Earth will truly be frozen.’
Victor Keller planted his foot in the snow and roared, "Move out!"
