Betrayed in the Apocalypse? I'll Plunder My Way to the Top
Chapter 89: Live Stream Face-Slapping
So, no one spoke. Everyone just stared at Sue and Elliot.
After all, if the two of them really had no Ability, no one would take them on a mission.
Many people subconsciously began to whisper among themselves.
"So why the hell did they bring two useless people on the mission a few days ago?!"
"I think it was because of some partnership between the Lawrence Group and the Sterling Group. It was the Sterling Group people who insisted on bringing them."
"If you look at it that way, Jason Sterling is a pretty good guy. At least he’s still helping out his ex-girlfriend."
’Yeah, if it were me, I wouldn’t bring a liability on a mission, especially one that uses up my resources.’ 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
For a moment, everyone was praising Jason Sterling and belittling Sue.
Elliot frowned. He couldn’t fathom how these people had become like this.
"Are they sick in the head? Why are they suddenly launching personal attacks against us?!"
The displeasure on Elliot’s face was plain to see.
But Sue just gave a cold, dismissive laugh, as if this was all too familiar. "Heh, I’m used to it."
’Used to it?’
Elliot looked at his sister in surprise. "You used to live like this? What in the world did you ever like about a guy like that?"
Elliot was furious, but Sue just said lightly, "That’s why I’ve seen the error of my ways and returned to my family."
With that, she ignored what everyone was saying and looked directly at Silas Hawthorne.
’There’s really no need to waste time on these people. It was Silas Hawthorne who asked me to go on this mission with him. It has nothing to do with them.’
Seeing Sue staring at Silas Hawthorne like that, Tia Norris couldn’t help but laugh. "Seriously? You’re already trying to latch onto someone powerful? Mr. Hawthorne might be approachable, but he won’t carry dead weight. Sue, please, get a grip, will you?"
For a moment, no one spoke. Jason Sterling and Tia Norris waited, expecting a show. Elliot and Mia Keller glared angrily at the two of them. Only Silas Hawthorne walked over unhurriedly and extended a hand to Sue. "Hello, Ms. Lawrence. I believe we can depart now, correct?"
’Us?’
Now it was everyone else’s turn to be shocked. Their eyes went wide as they stared intently at Sue.
Silas Hawthorne was going to take Sue on a mission??
"No way. Is this for real?"
"He’s really taking her? On what grounds?"
"Does that mean I can go too?"
The crowd couldn’t help but break into a clamor. Even Tia Norris instinctively spoke up. "Mr. Hawthorne, this isn’t right. Even if the Lawrence Family donated half their assets, you can’t just show her favoritism like this, right? Taking her on a mission is basically a free handout. What about the rest of us? Doesn’t it make a mockery of us working so hard to earn Points?"
’This is a joke. They’re here, working their asses off, teaming up to earn Points, but Sue gets to just lie back and coast. And she gets to be carried by someone like Silas Hawthorne, a top-tier expert leading the way for her to leech Points. How is that fair?’
The crowd buzzed with discussion, their feelings toward Sue filled with disgust and prejudice.
However, Silas Hawthorne just spoke calmly. "As I’ve said, everything at the base depends on one’s own merit. I personally invited Sue to join me on this mission. She possesses an Ability that none of you have."
After speaking, he ordered, "Issue anti-cold suits to Ms. Lawrence and her friends."
"Mr. Hawthorne!"
Tia Norris frowned and stepped forward again, voicing her doubts and dissatisfaction. "We’re still not convinced! Unless you can show us real proof that Sue actually has this Ability! Otherwise, we’ll protest as a group and stop listening to you and doing missions!"
"Right, protest! Protest!"
Many in the crowd were stirred up and began to clamor in agreement. Even Mia Keller frowned instinctively and looked at Sue. "Sue..."
’This situation is getting out of hand. What do we do now?’
Of course, Sue wasn’t afraid of any of this. She said calmly, "Then let’s live-stream the whole thing. We still have a signal, don’t we?"
With that, she took an anti-cold suit and walked away without a backward glance. "Bro, Mia, let’s go. Time to change."
She gave a wave, turned, and entered a nearby room. She went into the women’s section, while Elliot went into the men’s.
As soon as they were inside, Mia grabbed her arm worriedly. "Sue, will this be okay? And your Ability... isn’t it better not to reveal it?"
"Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing."
’At worst, I’ll just reveal one or two of my useless ones. In any case, my Raider Superpower must remain a secret forever.’
Sue’s mind was very clear. In her past life, she had never told anyone about this Superpower, and that was even more true now.
The Raider Superpower was simply too dangerous. You either get killed for it or used as a tool. Wasn’t Silas Hawthorne the same? Their relationship was nothing more than a partnership.
After changing, Sue and her friends came out. Silas Hawthorne had also put on his anti-cold suit and helmet. He led his group toward the exit.
"Mr. Hawthorne!"
Seeing this, Jason Sterling tried to follow, but Theodore Frost spoke up. "Mr. Sterling, we had an agreement. You’re on our team."
"However..."
Theodore Frost couldn’t help but smile. "Since your person mentioned a live stream earlier, and Mr. Hawthorne seems to think it’s a good idea, let’s both do it. He’ll lead one team, I’ll lead the other, and we’ll both stream. That way, no one can complain about anyone else, right?"
Jason Sterling froze for a second. ’A simultaneous live stream?’
Tia Norris and Dominic Trent also looked over. Dominic Trent frowned slightly. He didn’t think this was a good idea.
But he couldn’t sway Theodore Frost at the moment. He could sense that this man was likely an S Level, just like him. His Debating Skill was weakened against those of the same level, unless they had a close relationship. And to him, Theodore Frost was a complete stranger.
He calmed himself and waited for an opportunity.
"Jason, what do you think?"
Tia Norris looked at Jason Sterling. The man appeared completely composed and confident as he declared on the spot, "Then let’s live-stream. We all have real strength. We’re not afraid of this stuff!"
"Alright!"
Tia Norris had her own calculations. ’No matter how bad I am,’ she thought, ’I can’t possibly be worse than Sue, right?’
’Let’s do the live stream!’
So, they all went to change into their anti-cold suits as well. The group slowly stepped out of the main gate.
The temperature outside had already dropped below negative seventy degrees Celsius.
Even the robots pulling the sleds were wearing an extra layer of protection, but even so, you could see their movements were occasionally a bit sluggish.
"The temperature is too low."
Victor Keller frowned slightly, his expression clearly troubled.
"Then let’s hurry."
Silas Hawthorne withdrew his gaze, his coolly handsome face still serene.
It was as if the low temperature meant nothing to him at all.
Sue just watched calmly. She remembered people in her past life going out in temperatures of negative one hundred degrees Celsius, wearing bulky, heavy Liquid Nitrogen Anti-cold Suits. But even then, they couldn’t gather any supplies. First, the snow was too deep; it was difficult just to walk in those suits, let alone hold a shovel to clear snow. Second, the temperature was so low that the snow had frozen into ice that was impossible to break. If it weren’t for these robots, they would never be able to dig through ten meters of snow to get to the supplies.
"Where are we going?"
Sue asked instinctively.
Silas Hawthorne glanced at her and said flatly, "The Municipal Hospital."
’The hospital? Isn’t that the place Mia and I escaped from on the first day of the apocalypse?’
