Chapter 280: Delicious Meat

The boar leg was finally done cooking. It took well over two hours to fry it through, which was a long wait, considering that they simply wanted some breakfast so they could go on with their day, but nevertheless, the wait was worthwhile!

The meat was tender, it was easy to cut whole, steak-sized slices from the leg, and after they scraped off some of the charred portions of the leg, the meat was all the more delicious!

This technically was not considered bacon, which came from the belly of a pig, but it was a great second choice. A holy drumstick of flavors, one would say. Great way to get fat.

In an environment like this, where the jungle itself aims to take the moisture out of mammals such as themselves, getting fat may just come in handy. It would certainly keep them alive for longer, if they were in a horrid situation where food wasn't available.

The hot meat melted in their mouths, or, the flavor did, once they chewed through it enough. The fatty leg of the boar had plenty of meat to provide, and the team were even getting sad that they had to throw most of it away.

"It would've probably been smarter if we just cut a few stakes," Jimmy said, "It wouldn't take as long to cook, at least."

"You'd ruin the meat," Anna added, as she chewed through a mouthful, the utter sweetness of the meat flushing her bad mood away, "That son of a bitch was strong all over. Our knives would never be sharp enough to make stakes out of it."

"Right…" He said, and sliced off a few more pieces, giving them to the ladies, before he got one for himself, "It would've probably been smart to bring some salt. We could've stashed the boar in the safehouse, in front of the door. The salt would've kept insects away."

"I brought some salt," Anna added, "It's in my bag, but I only brought like ten kilos."

"We can dry twenty kilos of meat, then," He added, "We'll stash the meat in my bag, it's nearly empty anyway. My bag should be good enough to keep the salt and the meat in one place."

"So that's what you use salt for?" Almara asked, after the sweet flavor of the boar got her through two pounds of meat already. "That explains why you asked for salt last time. You never took some with you."

"Between the deaths, and jerking off near a funeral site, salt escaped my mind." He said.

The three of them continued to eat. Anna did not eat a lot, despite how angry her hunger made her, but her stomach could only fit so much. She knew enough to give her gut a break, because she knew what the daily meat intake could do to her organs. She already felt dehydrated, constantly, so she didn't want to overdo it. She nibbled on tiny bits, and took it slow, to give her body enough time to adjust.

Other than that, the entirety of her attention was drawn by the boar that she was yet to skin, so she aimed to remain focused, sharp. Consuming pound after pound of meat would knock her over like a Thanksgiving turkey, and she was well aware of that possibility.

After eating only a pound of meat, Anna stood up, and made her final touches on the boar.

Jimmy rustled through her bag, found some salt, and sprinkled it on his steak. He threw the seasoning in late, indefinitely, but to his defense, he didn't know that Anna brought salt along.

He sprinkled some salt across the cooked leg, and said, "This'll help make it a bit more tender."

"It's pretty good without the salt," Almara said, "Why would you ruin such a sweet delicacy by throwing salt on it?"

"Heh," He smiled, "So you like fatty meat, huh? Do you think it was worth the wait?"

"No," She said, "But it's making up for it. I can admit that."

The pungent aroma of the meat only served to improve their mood now that they were eating. Everyone was happy, but Jimmy was getting more paranoid by the minute.

Something was gnawing at the back of his head. Everytime he heard the Vampiric Parrots caw, his paranoia got another small spike.

"The fire shouldn't work this well…" He muttered, "Why haven't we been attacked for hours? We should've fought off at least two Stompers by now."

Jimmy referred to Allosaurus Fragilis, the species his beloved pet belonged to, and considering how common its many species were across the jungle, he did not understand how not even one of them attacked them yet.

"I hope to God a bigger predator isn't keeping the smaller ones away," He said, as he chewed through another steak.

Almara barely listened to him, but she added, "It almost sounds like you want us to get attacked. What's wrong with you?"

"That's no way to treat your people's hero," He smiled.

"You were… inside me this morning." She avoided eye contact, "You shouldn't expect me to treat you like a beloved guest after all that we did, or what you did, when you weren't getting the chance to play with either of us."

"You can grow a dick, right?" He bit back, "Next time we fuck, you stand on the sidelines, and watch us fuck. We'll see how long you last."

Almara nearly choked on her food. She didn't expect such a response, but granted, she found it within herself to respect him a little more.

"Do you think we should have a look around?" She pitched, following up on his prior idea, "If there is a big cunt around us, it would be best if we find it before it finds us."

"Nah," He sighed, "It's been a while since we started the fire. No predator would be that patient. I'm just losing my marbles again. I do not like this God Forsaken jungle."

"Why are you here, then?" She asked.

"I'm curious," He answered, "I can hate and love something. I hated the dinosaurs too, but they became my greatest tool."

"Right," She nodded, "Jones said something about hearing dinosaurs before they even approached. You can do the same, right?"

"I can," He nodded, "That's what makes me nervous. I'm only hearing the red bastards flying around Anna, nothing else."

"That is odd…" She looked at the fire, "Let's just keep our eyes open."

As the two of them talked, Anna took a swift break from her boar skinning, just to kick another Vampiric Parrot through the jungle. She kept being harassed by them, and their numbers went up to thirty now, regardless of the few that they had killed.

"Keep fucking with me, you little cunts, just keep on," She grunted, "You'll find yourself in a salt pile soon enough."
