Born as a Witch
Chapter 445: Crystal fruits and taste
As Lira and Renkai ventured deeper into the crystalline forest, Lira’s eyes caught a faint glimmer near the base of a spiraling tree. She knelt, brushing aside tiny shards, and uncovered a cluster of small, translucent crystals embedded in the ground. Unlike the glowing fruit-like orbs she had seen before, these were jagged, colorless, almost like tiny shards of ice—but warmer to the touch, and pulsing softly with life.
Curious, she picked one up and sniffed it. It smelled faintly metallic, like minerals in a riverbed. Tentatively, she brought it to her lips.
The moment the crystal touched her tongue, she felt a sharp, bracing saltiness that made her eyes water slightly. "Huh... salty," she murmured, tasting it again. It had a crisp crunch, then melted into a smooth, mineral-rich liquid that lingered pleasantly on her tongue.
Renkai leaned closer. "Salt crystals? Here? That’s... unusual."
Lira’s eyes sparkled. "Not just salt... there’s energy in it. I can feel the earth element running through it. This could be incredible for potions, or maybe even to help plants grow in the Grove. And... it’s edible!"
She carefully collected several, storing them in her satchel. "We can test them later, see how they interact with other ingredients. But for now... we have a new discovery."
Renkai shook his head in amazement, smiling. "You always find the strangest things. I wouldn’t even think of tasting a crystal from a glowing forest."
Lira laughed softly. "That’s the fun of it! Every world has its secrets, and I want to find them all." She looked around, sensing the subtle currents of the forest guiding her deeper. "Let’s keep moving. Something tells me there’s even more waiting for us."
The salty crystals left a lingering flavor on her tongue, a reminder of the forest’s strangeness and generosity. Every step forward promised more discoveries, and Lira’s heart raced with the thrill of exploration.
As the sun dipped below the high mineral spires, the forest around them shifted. The intense glare softened into a gentle radiance, the crystals catching the last rays and refracting them into soft, floating rainbows. Lira and Renkai found a small clearing among spiky crystal trees, where the ground was relatively smooth.
"Here will do," Lira said, brushing a few loose shards aside. She pulled a small blanket from her satchel and laid it over the jagged floor. Renkai knelt beside her, inspecting the surrounding crystal trunks for any danger. "It’s beautiful," he murmured, his voice low. "Even at night, this place... it’s alive."
Lira nodded, gathering a few of the edible crystals she had found earlier. She offered one to Renkai, who hesitated at first before biting into the salty, mineral-rich shard. His eyes widened. "That’s... actually good," he admitted, crunching another piece. "Salty and... energizing, somehow."
As they settled down, Lira spread out her satchel’s contents—tiny glowing fruits, crystal shards, and a few rare seeds she had collected along the way. Even in the dimmed light, the items shimmered softly. "Look at this place," she whispered, running her hand along a spiraling tree. "It’s like the forest itself is alive with magic. Everything is connected."
Above them, faint movements caught their eyes. Small, translucent creatures with tiny wings flitted among the branches, their bodies glowing in soft hues of green and blue. Lira watched in awe as one hovered near her shoulder, curious but gentle. She smiled, holding out a glowing orb from her satchel. The creature inspected it, then zipped off into the crystal canopy.
Renkai chuckled softly. "It’s like the forest knows we’re visitors. It’s watching, but it doesn’t seem hostile... yet."
They prepared a small fire—not a normal flame, but a controlled spark using Lira’s elemental energy. The light danced across the crystal surfaces, casting fractal patterns that shifted and shimmered across the trees. Shadows moved in strange angles, bending along the facets of the crystal trunks, but none approached. Lira felt a pulse from the ground beneath them, subtle but comforting. The forest was alive, aware, and somehow protective.
As they ate a simple meal of dried fruits and the salty crystals, Lira cuddled Fluffy from her satchel, who purred softly. "It feels... safe here," she murmured, stroking the little creature. "Even with the shadows following us in the other worlds, this forest... it seems different."
Renkai lay back beside her, scanning the crystalline canopy. "It’s too quiet," he said after a moment. "Too peaceful. I don’t like it when it’s this calm."
Lira nodded slowly, feeling the truth in his words. Even though the shimmer of the crystals was mesmerizing, she could sense the latent energy—like the forest was holding its breath, waiting. Her instincts told her that the beauty of this world might hide its dangers.
As night deepened, a soft hum echoed through the crystalline trunks, vibrating through the ground and air. Lira leaned back against a smooth, rounded crystal tree, watching the floating light patterns shift and flow. "The shimmer... it never stops," she said quietly. "Even in the dark, the forest glows. It’s alive in ways we can barely understand."
Renkai reached over, squeezing her hand. "Whatever comes next," he said, "we face it together. This forest, the crystals... it doesn’t scare me with you here."
Lira smiled, letting her thoughts drift as the gentle hum and the sparkling shimmer of the forest enveloped them. Around them, small crystal shards hummed softly, tiny lights dancing in patterns across the canopy. The night in the crystalline forest was quiet, alive, and full of possibilities, and for the first time in a long while, Lira felt a deep, unwavering calm.
Even as the shimmer continued, she knew that the next day’s journey would bring discoveries she couldn’t yet imagine—and perhaps, challenges that would test all she had learned.
The next morning, Lira awoke with a spark of excitement. Sunlight—or what counted as sunlight in this shimmering world—filtered through the crystal trees, scattering colors across the forest floor. She sat up, Fluffy curling beside her, and immediately opened her satchel.
Inside were the other crystal fruits she had discovered the previous day. Unlike the small, salty crystals that had been edible on their own, these fruits were harder, jagged, and glittered like raw gemstones. Their aroma was surprisingly sweet, almost like honey mixed with faint mineral notes. Lira’s eyes lit up.
"These could be incredible," she murmured, pulling one out. She tapped it lightly against a smooth crystal trunk, listening to the hollow, metallic ping it made. "But eating them raw... impossible. Too hard. I’ll need to find a way to dissolve them, extract the juice."
Renkai stirred beside her, yawning. "You really want to play alchemist with them right here?" he asked with a half-smile. "I thought we’d rest."
Lira shook her head, already pulling out small containers, flasks, and tools from her satchel. "I have everything I need," she said confidently. "It’ll be safe. I just need to test it."
She began carefully tapping a few pieces with a small, blunt tool, breaking off tiny shards. Using her elemental senses, she gently warmed them with her fire magic, observing how the crystal reacted. Some softened slightly but didn’t melt entirely. She scribbled notes in her journal. "Needs more... something to dissolve the crystalline structure without losing flavor," she muttered.
Hours passed as she experimented, grinding, heating, and stirring, testing different combinations of water, gentle heat, and even subtle energy currents from her elemental magic. Fluffy purred beside her, occasionally batting at stray shards that fell from her work.
Finally, she discovered that lightly heating the crystal fruits while submerging them in purified mineral water allowed the shards to slowly dissolve, releasing a shimmering, viscous liquid. The color was soft amber with sparkling highlights, and the aroma was intoxicatingly sweet.
She tasted a small spoonful and nearly gasped. "It’s... perfect!" she exclaimed. The juice was sweet, slightly tangy, with an aftertaste of minerals that made it refreshing and oddly energizing. Renkai leaned over, skeptical at first, but quickly agreed after tasting. "Okay... this is incredible. Like nothing I’ve ever had before."
Lira carefully bottled several small flasks, labeling them and storing them in her satchel. "These will be great for the Grove," she said, grinning. "We can cultivate similar plants—or at least use the juice for potions, meals, or experiments."
As the night fell, they set up camp again under the glowing crystal canopy. Lira arranged her experiments neatly, leaving tiny flasks of the liquid to cool. She hummed softly to herself, pleased with the results. The shimmer of the forest around them reflected in the bottles, making it look like they were holding tiny, captured pieces of starlight.
Renkai watched her quietly, a small smile tugging at his lips. "You’re amazing, you know that?" he said softly. "Even in a place like this, you find a way to turn anything into something useful... magical."
Lira laughed, leaning back against a crystal trunk. "It’s just... curiosity, Renkai. I want to understand everything, collect everything, and see what works. And here, I can do it safely, with everything I need right at hand."
The night deepened, and the crystalline forest hummed faintly around them, the floating lights casting soft glimmers on their camp. Lira continued experimenting, tasting, and noting, while Renkai kept watch quietly, listening to the gentle hum of the living crystals.
By the time sleep finally claimed them, Lira had filled several small vials with crystal fruit juice, jars of pulped fruit, and carefully preserved shards for later study. Everything she needed was in her satchel, ready to be integrated into the Grove or used in her next adventure.
As they drifted off, the shimmering trees seemed to pulse softly, almost approving of her work. The forest had shared a secret, and Lira had learned how to make it hers—safely, creatively, and deliciously.
