Born as a Witch
Chapter 454: Lira and Serelyth travel through portal
Morning light filtered through the canopy, soft and golden, scattering across the crystal saplings Lira had planted. Tiny shoots glimmered faintly, their edges refracting the sun like miniature prisms. Fluffy padded among them, tail swishing, inspecting each new leaf as if approving the arrangement.
Lira knelt beside one of the larger saplings, brushing a hand over its delicate crystalline petals. The juice she had made from the fruits of the crystal world seeped into the soil, faint rainbow veins spreading through the roots. Already, the Grove seemed to hum more fully, a richer, deeper resonance that intertwined with the Great Tree’s own pulse.
Renkai leaned against a nearby trunk, arms crossed but relaxed, a small smile playing on his lips. "You’ve really outdone yourself," he said softly. "The Grove... it feels alive in a different way."
"I know," Lira replied quietly, not looking up. She inhaled the mixed scents of earth, crystal, and sweet juice. "It’s like the worlds we visited... they’re all here now. A piece of them, made part of us."
Serelyth and Thalanir emerged from the deeper grove, each carrying small tools and tending to the new saplings. They paused as Lira straightened, brushing soil from her hands. Thalanir nodded toward her. "The integration is... perfect. Even the Grove seems to welcome them."
Serelyth crouched to inspect the glowing roots of one sapling. "And these fruits... they’re more than food. They’re energy, memory... a story. Whoever comes after us will know we reached beyond this world and returned."
Fluffy chirped softly, ears twitching toward a faint shimmer near the edge of the Grove. Lira’s gaze followed it. A ripple of prismatic light pulsed through the air — not threatening, not open, just present.
Her chest tightened with a familiar thrill. "Another portal," she whispered. "It’s calling."
Renkai moved beside her instantly, hand brushing over hers. "Then we’ll answer it. Together."
The Great Tree’s deep voice rolled through the roots and leaves, calm and steady. "You have balanced worlds within this Grove. You have returned stronger, wiser. Yet the threads of travel remain. Watch... and be ready."
Lira smiled softly. She closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the subtle harmonics of the crystal saplings, the warmth of the Grove, and the steady pulse of Renkai’s presence. Fluffy circled her feet, purring, Glint perched atop a branch, chirping once as if to confirm the message.
When she opened her eyes, the Grove looked brighter, alive with a subtle shimmer. The newly integrated plants swayed gently in the light, tiny rainbows dancing along leaves and roots. Birds flitted through the branches, drawn by the new energy, and the hum of life was fuller than ever.
Lira turned to Renkai, her hand finding his. "This is our home," she said. "And every journey we take... it will come back here. Everything we see, everything we learn — it becomes part of the Grove."
Renkai nodded, gaze lingering on the shimmer at the Grove’s edge. "Then let’s make sure we’re ready. There will be more."
"And we will go," Lira said, her voice steady and confident. "Together. With everyone who belongs here."
The Grove settled into quiet harmony once more, the crystal saplings gleaming faintly as if acknowledging her words. Somewhere, far beyond the familiar trees, a faint portal pulse whispered — patient, waiting, ready for the next adventure.
And for the first time in a long while, Lira allowed herself to breathe fully, knowing that home, strength, and the call of new worlds could all coexist.
She smiled. "The journey isn’t over. It just... begins again."
Fluffy mewed in agreement, Renkai squeezed her hand, and the Grove itself seemed to lean in, listening. The light shimmered faintly, promising new worlds, new portals, and countless stories yet to unfold.
...
The Grove was quiet in the early morning. Lira felt it first: a subtle pulse underfoot, a faint vibration through the roots, and a shiver of energy in the air that made her hair lift. The crystal saplings she had planted shimmered faintly, responding to some unseen signal.
"Do you feel that?" Lira whispered, turning to Serelyth, who had been standing near the Great Tree, her hands resting lightly on its bark.
Serelyth nodded slowly. "Yes. It’s a portal. But... it’s different. I’ve never sensed one so... unstable." 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
Lira frowned. "Unstable?"
"The threads of this world are tangled," Serelyth said. "Whoever—or whatever—calls, it isn’t aligned with our usual pathways."
The Great Tree’s deep voice resonated in the Grove. "You two are chosen for this journey. Trust in each other. But one must remain to anchor the Grove."
Lira’s gaze drifted to the edge of the Grove, where the jagged light of a portal shimmered faintly. She looked for Renkai—but he wasn’t near the portal. He lingered by the Great Tree, distant, his posture tense but firm. He gave no indication of following; perhaps he could not, perhaps he had duties to the Grove that prevented him from approaching.
Lira’s chest tightened. A small pang of worry, a trace of fear, but she forced it aside.
"Are you ready?" Serelyth asked, stepping closer.
Lira tightened her grip on her satchel and nodded. "Yes. Together."
The portal pulsed as if it knew they were approaching, jagged light twisting and folding in impossible angles. Fluffy mewed softly at her feet, fur bristling slightly. The air hummed with energy.
Without looking back, they stepped forward.
The sensation was immediate: disorientation, as if reality itself had dissolved. Colors fractured and swirled; the pulse of energy ran through her chest. Serelyth’s hand held hers tightly, anchoring them both.
And then — release.
The world snapped into focus. Lira opened her eyes to a barren landscape of floating islands, jagged black rocks, and swirling mists. Above, auroras rippled across the sky in strange, impossible patterns. Crystalline formations glimmered faintly in the distance, and the air carried a subtle vibration, as if alive.
Serelyth exhaled slowly. "We... we aren’t home."
"No," Lira murmured. "And I don’t think this is any world we’ve visited before."
Fluffy hissed softly, ears pinned back, tail low. Lira felt the weight of the unknown pressing against her chest—but also the bond with Serelyth. They were together, and that steadied her.
"We move forward," Lira said firmly, adjusting her satchel. "Whatever this place is... whatever it wants... we face it together."
The faint pulse ahead seemed to respond. Light fractured across the jagged spires, teasing the outline of something far beyond the mists—a signal, a guide, or perhaps another portal.
Lira felt the thread of possibility stir in her chest. She didn’t know where it led, but she knew one thing: they would find the way back.
And somewhere, far away in the Grove, Renkai’s gaze lingered on the fading shimmer of the portal, a heavy weight settling in his chest. Later... he would regret not being closer.
...
Lira took a careful step across the floating, jagged terrain, each footfall sending tiny tremors of dark crystal dust scattering into the mist. Her journal was clutched in one hand, Fluffy tucked safely in the crook of her arm.
Serelyth hovered slightly above the ground, her form shifting subtly—white scales gleaming faintly through her humanoid shape. She tilted her head, eyes sharp and luminous as she studied the broken landscape.
"This... this is fascinating," Lira whispered. "I’ve never felt portal energy radiate like this before. The way it fractured reality..." She gestured to the shimmering light across the jagged spires, threads of possibility dangling like strands of a web.
Serelyth smirked lightly, her wings fluttering just enough to shift her weight, keeping a cautious distance from the fragile crystal ground. "Hmph. Portal mechanics, planar thresholds, resonance threads..." She let the words roll off her tongue with an air of playful superiority. "Child’s play for someone of my... age."
Lira looked at her with wide, amused eyes. "Age? You mean dragon age?"
Serelyth’s smirk widened. "Indeed. Centuries, child. I’ve walked across skies and through realms that would snap most mortals’ minds in half. Portals like this? Please. This is nothing—merely an exercise in observation."
Lira laughed softly, shaking her head. "Well, it still feels overwhelming to me."
Serelyth’s expression softened for a moment. "Yes, yes, I can see that. But your energy... it resonates with it. Strong, perceptive. You have the instincts of a seasoned traveler already. You will do well here."
Lira bit her lip, curious and hesitant. "So... do you think this portal leads home?"
Serelyth’s eyes narrowed, considering the pulsing light in the distance. "Possibly. Or it may lead to another... crucible. Another challenge. Portals are rarely straightforward; they are living thresholds, Lira. They do not simply obey the wishes of travelers."
Lira’s hand brushed over the satchel at her side, feeling the familiar weight of her collection—crystalline fruits, seeds, even fragments of plants from the last world. "Then we just... keep moving carefully?"
Serelyth’s grin returned, teeth gleaming faintly in the misty light. "Yes. And try not to fall into any traps along the way. Or, you know... melt into some crystal spire, if you’re feeling dramatic."
Lira rolled her eyes but smiled, feeling a rare lightness despite the alien world around them. "I’ll try not to, for your sake."
Serelyth shifted closer, lowering her form to walk alongside her. "Do not mistake my amusement for lack of respect. I am impressed, little traveler. You have navigated dangerous realms before and returned intact. Here, you will need that skill—and more."
Lira looked at her companion, thinking about the bond they were forming. "And you’ll guide me?"
Serelyth chuckled softly. "Guide? Perhaps. Or perhaps I will simply watch you stumble in style and call it learning."
Despite the teasing, Lira felt a pulse of reassurance from the dragon beside her. If anyone could survive a place like this, it was together—her instincts, her space bag, her plants, and Serelyth’s centuries of experience.
Above them, the portal’s jagged shimmer pulsed faintly, threads of light stretching toward unknown horizons. And Lira knew: every step forward was a step deeper into mystery—and closer to the way home.
