She froze — they were not attacking aggressively, but nibbling gently, testing the fruit. One glanced up at her, almost expectantly, before returning to nibbling.

"They... they like it," Lira murmured. "Maybe they eat only certain crystals and fruits here."

Serelyth chuckled, a low, amused rumble. "They’re more intelligent than they seem. Observing, testing, learning. That’s why they survive in a floating world like this. Careful, though — don’t let them think you’re prey."

Lira adjusted her bag, leaving some fruit behind on a safe, flat surface. The creatures swarmed briefly, tasting, chirping, and then scattered gracefully into the air. Their translucent wings caught the light, refracting it in beautiful patterns across the island.

"It’s incredible," Lira breathed. "Every world has its guardians. These... dragons... they belong here. They’re tied to the crystals."

"They sense energy," Serelyth confirmed. "And they’ll remember you. This is their territory. Respect it, or you’ll be reminded quickly."

Lira nodded, carefully mapping the creatures’ patterns and behaviors in her journal. She realized this world was not just a place for resources — it was alive, and its guardians were active participants in maintaining balance.

As the sun dipped below the edges of the floating islands, painting the sky in violet and gold, Lira felt a mixture of awe and responsibility. The strange dragons weren’t just wonders to observe — they were a living warning, a reminder that even in worlds of crystal and light, respect and caution were essential.

Serelyth lowered her wings. "Ready to settle for the night?" she asked. "We can camp on the central spire. The dragonlings won’t bother us there — the higher the altitude, the more cautious they are."

Lira nodded, still watching a small dragonling spiral around a floating tree. "Yes... but tomorrow, I want to study them more. I think they might help us understand the energy of this world better."

Serelyth exhaled a puff of warm air from her nostrils, forming a mist that drifted around Lira. "Good. But remember — here, curiosity is power, but so is patience."

Lira smiled, feeling both nervous and exhilarated. Tomorrow, she would explore more of these creatures’ secrets, and perhaps unlock new knowledge about the floating sky world — all while riding the strongest, most magnificent dragon she had ever known.

The sun hung low above the floating islands, scattering fractured light across the jagged crystal spires. Lira crouched beside Serelyth, eyes scanning the ground and the scattered dragon-like creatures. Some were nibbling on luminous crystal plants, others simply circling lazily in the thin, high-altitude air.

"See that cluster over there?" Lira whispered, pointing toward a grouping of small, translucent fruits growing on a crystalline bush. "Some of them glow faintly. I think they might be edible... or at least not harmful."

Serelyth lowered her head, nostrils flaring as she sniffed carefully. "Hmm. Glow doesn’t always mean food. Could be energy, could be poison. Let me test first."

"Test?" Lira said, wide-eyed. "You mean... taste it?"

Serelyth chuckled softly, a low rumble vibrating through her chest. "Dragons aren’t as sensitive to toxins as you are. A little risk is nothing to me. Besides, it’s how I learn."

Before Lira could protest, Serelyth reached a clawed hand and plucked a glowing fruit, holding it carefully between her fingers. She inhaled its scent deeply, nostrils flaring, then nibbled a small portion. Immediately, her eyes brightened.

"Hah! Not bad," she said, tongue flicking. "Sweet, slightly metallic, and crunchy. Safe for me... probably safe for you, if prepared properly."

Lira scribbled notes furiously in her journal, hands trembling slightly from excitement. "Metallic? Crunchy? That’s... incredible. These flavors... and textures... I’ve never seen anything like it. Maybe we can extract juice or mix it with the crystal fruits we gathered."

Serelyth shifted into her full white, pearly dragon form for a moment, allowing her body to stretch and shimmer in the soft light. "I’ll stay here to test more," she said. "You watch the dragonlings — see which ones nibble and which ones ignore certain plants. That’ll tell us a lot about edibility and potential reactions."

Lira nodded, crouching low to observe. A small, four-winged dragonling cautiously approached the glowing bush, sniffing and then gingerly biting a fruit. Its wings fluttered with delight. Another dragonling moved to a nearby crystal vine and recoiled immediately after tasting it.

"They know instinctively," Lira whispered, eyes sparkling. "They’re telling us which ones are okay."

Serelyth’s tail swept slowly across the ground as she tested another fruit, crunching it with a satisfied murmur. "Yes, these dragonlings are excellent indicators. Their reactions are consistent. Safe fruits glow faintly and are soft. Dangerous ones are bitter, hard, or shimmer in sharp angles."

Lira scribbled more notes, excitement mounting. "This is amazing... I can catalog them, make a guide for future travelers, maybe even for potions or cultivation back in the Grove."

Serelyth leaned closer, shimmering scales catching the fading sun. "Just remember, little one — tasting is one thing, experimenting is another. Keep your satchel ready, and make sure nothing is taken from its native environment too hastily. Balance first."

Lira nodded solemnly. "Of course. Respect the world. Always."

The dragonlings watched them with bright eyes, chirping and hopping from crystal to crystal. Serelyth plucked another glowing fruit, tossed it gently toward a cautious young dragonling, and it caught it midair, nibbling cautiously.

Lira smiled, feeling a rare sense of harmony. Between Serelyth’s guidance, the dragonlings’ instincts, and her own careful observations, they were beginning to understand the strange ecology of the floating islands.

As Lira knelt to examine a glowing cluster of crystal fruits, a sudden chill cut through the warm, thin air of the floating island. Fluffy’s ears twitched sharply, his tail puffing out. Lira’s fingers froze mid-scribble in her journal.

From the corner of her eye, she glimpsed a shadow — jagged, flickering unnaturally against the floating rocks — moving toward her with deliberate speed. Its form wavered, dark smoke-like tendrils curling and reaching out, almost like fingers.

"Lira..." Serelyth’s voice dropped low, warning and fierce. Her eyes narrowed, iridescent scales gleaming as she shifted slightly, claws flexing.

The shadow lunged, faster than the air should allow. Lira barely had time to flinch. She opened her mouth to call for help, but before she could react, Serelyth roared. The sound shattered the calm of the floating isles, a deep vibration that echoed across the crystal spires.

In one fluid motion, the dragon shifted fully into her pearly form, wings spanning wide, tail sweeping with precision. Her massive claws intercepted the shadow mid-lunge, shredding it against the jagged rocks and scattering its smoky tendrils.

The shadow hissed and writhed, as if burned by her presence, then — with a final, eerie shiver — dissipated into nothingness, leaving only a faint wisp of darkness lingering in the air.

Lira’s heart pounded. She stepped closer to Serelyth, trembling slightly but steadying herself. "They’re still after me," she whispered. "The shadows... it’s because of the portals. I’m breaking the rules, traveling between worlds where I shouldn’t. That’s why they hunt me."

Serelyth’s wings folded slowly around her, protective but not enclosing, a subtle barrier. "Breaking rules?" she asked, tilting her head. "Do they... enforce them?"

Lira nodded. "Not just enforce. They punish. Shadows are drawn to me because my travels — my choices — upset the balance. Every time I step through a portal... I risk being marked, hunted. And now... I brought knowledge, new companions. I broke the balance further."

Serelyth lowered her snout near Lira’s shoulder. "Then we must be careful. But I see why they don’t reach me — and you have me." Her pearly scales glimmered softly. "I will guard you. Whatever world, whatever rules."

Lira exhaled, letting her fingers brush over the cluster of crystal fruits she had been cataloging. "Thank you. I just... I hate that I can’t fully explore without danger following me."

Serelyth’s eyes softened. "Then we adapt. Learn the rules, or learn to evade them. Together, little one. The shadows can hunt, but they cannot break us if we move wisely."

Fluffy chirped beside her, ears twitching toward the empty space where the shadow had dissolved. Lira patted the cat’s head gently, then turned back to the dragon. "You’ve been amazing... I couldn’t do this without you."

Serelyth nudged her gently with her snout. "And you have me. Always. Now, continue. There’s more to learn here — and you must gather what you can. But stay sharp."

Lira nodded, determination settling over her. She could feel the threads of danger lingering, but now, with Serelyth’s protection and the floating islands’ lessons, she was ready to face both shadows and discovery.

After the shadow vanished, Serelyth lowered her massive wings and settled beside Lira on a flat, floating rock. The tension still hummed faintly in the air, but now it was time to explore another side of this strange sky world. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

From a ridge nearby, tiny dragon-like creatures — dragonlings, no bigger than a child — tumbled and leapt between crystal shards and floating moss patches. Their scales shimmered in rainbow hues, catching the sunlight in flickers that made Lira blink in delight.
