Chapter 465: Ruins World

Lira shook her head, still giggling, and held out a hand. "Come on, clumsy hero. We can’t explore without you."

He took it reluctantly, muttering under his breath, "I cannot believe I was ejected like some enchanted potato..."

Serelyth swooped down, letting him use her scaled shoulder to steady himself. "You survived worse than a sneeze from a portal, Renkai. Don’t act like it’s the end of the world."

Renkai huffed, brushing more dust off. "Not the end... but it’s definitely the most humiliating introduction to a ruins world I’ve ever had."

Lira laughed again, shaking her head. "Welcome to our adventure, Renkai. Try not to trip over any ancient curses this time."

He gave her a mock salute. "No promises. But I’ll try. Seriously."

With that, the three of them—Lira, Serelyth, and the very begrudgingly deposited Renkai—continued deeper into the ruins, laughter fading into the eerie hum of broken stone and distant magic.

Even in this dangerous, alien place, the absurdity of portals reminded them that some adventures had to be survived... and laughed at, too.

The ruins stretched out before them like the skeleton of some fallen giant. Broken towers leaned at impossible angles, their stone surfaces etched with faint glowing runes that pulsed softly in the mist. Cracks in the ground glimmered with faint streams of liquid light, illuminating twisted vines that clung stubbornly to shattered walls.

Lira’s eyes scanned everything, taking notes in her mind and in her journal. "The runes... they seem to react to presence," she whispered, reaching out to touch one. As her fingers hovered near the surface, the glow pulsed brighter, like a heartbeat.

Serelyth, now fully draconic again, unfurled her pearly white wings, lifting slightly off the ground. "Careful. Ruins magic is unpredictable. I’ve felt it stir before... it can detect fear, curiosity, even hesitation."

Renkai grumbled behind her, still brushing dust from his jacket. "I hate when places can sense my mood. I already have enough to worry about with these cliffs and broken stones."

A faint, whispering hum carried through the fog. Lira stopped mid-step. Fluffy, curled at her feet, hissed softly, tail twitching toward a jagged stone spire.

"That sound... the ruins are alive," she said, voice low. "Not like the Grove. This place... reacts to us."

Serelyth’s gaze narrowed, wings flexing. "I smell something... not entirely friendly. Watch the edges."

They moved cautiously, stepping over broken walkways and jagged rubble. Small creatures scuttled between the ruins, some crystalline and fragile, others vaguely draconic, hissing as they hid from the intruders. Lira paused at one, examining its translucent scales. "Interesting... almost like a miniature guardian. I wonder if they can be used safely in the Grove..."

A sudden shadow flickered across the mist, faster than their eyes could track. Fluffy arched his back, fur standing on end. Renkai instantly stepped in front of Lira. "Again?!" he muttered, eyes scanning the fog.

The shadow hesitated at the edge of a broken tower, then darted back into a crack in the stone. It wasn’t aggressive... yet. But Lira’s chest tightened. "These aren’t random appearances," she murmured. "They’re watching... learning."

Serelyth lowered herself slightly, wings shielding Lira instinctively. "Then we move slowly. Stay together."

They pressed onward, deeper into the ruins. A low, shimmering vibration began under their feet, faint at first but growing steadily. Lira crouched, placing her hand on a fragment of cracked stone. The vibrations traveled up her arm, through her chest.

"The energy here... it’s like the crystal world, but older... more chaotic," she said, eyes wide. "I can feel a source... maybe an artifact... somewhere ahead."

Renkai’s eyebrows furrowed. "We need to be careful. The last time we underestimated a world..."

Lira nodded, pulling out her satchel and checking her tools and small elemental devices. "We won’t repeat mistakes. We move, we observe, and we don’t touch anything we don’t understand."

They finally reached a wide hall, half-collapsed, with glowing runes etched along every broken surface. In the center, atop a shattered pedestal, rested a faintly pulsing orb. Its light shimmered like liquid silver, and the air around it rippled, distorting their reflections.

Serelyth hovered near the ceiling, wings flexing nervously. "That... that is an artifact of the ruins. I’ve only sensed these before. The energy is unstable. If it reacts to curiosity..."

Lira’s eyes were fixed. "It calls me," she whispered. Her hand twitched toward it. "I can feel... it wants to be understood."

Renkai stepped closer, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. "Lira... we agreed. No touching without understanding. Don’t get pulled in like before."

Fluffy mewed sharply, tail flicking. The orb pulsed faster in response, almost like a heartbeat echoing hers.

The ruins seemed to hold their breath.

And somewhere in the mist, a faint shadow watched, waiting for the moment when curiosity might break caution.

The orb pulsed again, faster this time, and Lira felt it tug at something deep within her — a memory, a sense, a thread she couldn’t name. Her fingers itched to reach out, but Renkai’s hand tightened gently on her shoulder.

"Lira..." he said softly, his voice low, almost a whisper, "I won’t let you get pulled away from me again. Not here. Not anywhere."

She looked at him, and for a heartbeat, the ruins and the orb faded behind the warmth in his eyes. His gaze was steady, fierce, protective — the kind that made her feel anchored even in the strangest, most alien places.

"I know," she murmured, leaning slightly into him. Her hand hovered above the orb, then fell. "I just... I can feel it. It’s calling me, Renkai. Like it knows something only I can understand."

He exhaled slowly, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "Then we understand it together. You, me... Serelyth... no curiosity alone will drag you away."

Fluffy mewed, brushing against her leg, and his ears flicked toward the shadows that lingered at the edges of the hall. They hadn’t left; they were patient, silent, waiting for a moment of distraction. Lira felt the pull of the orb, but she also felt the presence of Renkai — a warmth and steadiness she could lean on.

Serelyth hovered above, wings partially spread, eyes scanning the hall. "The ruins sense your connection, Lira," she said, her tone both wary and fascinated. "It reacts to more than just curiosity. They’re... alive in a way you can’t ignore."

Lira nodded, glancing at the glowing runes beneath their feet. "The orb... it doesn’t just call. It mirrors me. Every pulse I feel, every beat... it’s echoing inside it."

Renkai crouched beside her, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Then let it echo with us. Together, okay? I don’t want a repeat of before."

A low hum rose from the ruins, vibrating through the cracked floor. The shadows flinched, recoiling slightly from the bond between Lira and Renkai. The deeper she felt his presence, the more the orb’s pull seemed to waver — curious, intrigued, almost respectful of the tether that held her here in the physical world.

"You feel that?" Lira whispered, half to herself. "It’s... listening."

"Yes," Renkai said, eyes dark with focus. "And so am I."

Slowly, she extended her hand toward the orb, this time with Renkai’s fingers brushing hers. The instant her skin brushed the silvery surface, light flared, surrounding them both. The ruins reacted — walls shifting slightly, runes glowing brighter, and the distant shadows retreating. The orb’s pulse synchronized with their combined heartbeat, a rhythmic resonance that hummed through the chamber.

Serelyth’s wings beat against the air, stirring motes of dust and faint shards of light. "Incredible... it’s not just an artifact. It’s a conduit. It’s... alive," she murmured, awe lacing her words.

Renkai kept one hand on Lira, the other lightly resting on the hilt of his blade, eyes scanning every corner. "Then we treat it with respect. Not like a puzzle, not like a toy. Together. Always together."

Lira smiled faintly, leaning against him. "I think... I think it wants to show us something. But I can’t go alone."

"You won’t," Renkai said firmly. "Ever. Not here. Not anywhere. I’ll follow you through every shadow, every portal, every... world."

A ripple of light expanded from the orb, flowing outward like liquid silver, filling the room. The ruins seemed to breathe, the walls adjusting subtly as if creating a path forward. Lira glanced at Serelyth, then at Renkai, and whispered, "Shall we see where it leads?"

Renkai grinned faintly, brushing dust from his shoulders. "Lead the way, my marked traveler. I’ve got your back."

Fluffy mewed again, twining around Lira’s legs, and even the shadows paused, watching from the edges, hesitant against the unexpected bond that radiated stronger than fear or hunger.

Together, the three — Lira, Renkai, and Serelyth — stepped forward into the shimmering light, deeper into the semi-sentient ruins, toward whatever secrets the orb held. And somewhere in that glow, the ruins whispered, alive and ancient, intrigued by the unity, courage, and love that now walked among them.

The silver light from the orb stretched across the hall, bending and refracting over the shattered walls. Lira stepped forward cautiously, Renkai close behind, Serelyth hovering protectively above. Every pulse of the orb’s glow felt like a heartbeat echoing through the ruins, guiding them forward.

"Follow the light," Lira whispered, her voice barely audible. "It’s like it’s... shaping a path."
