Born as a Witch
Chapter 472: Mission of the Luminous Threads
The Grove breathed around her, serene and familiar, yet alive with expectation. Lira knelt near the Great Tree, Fluffy rubbing against her legs, purring softly. The wind stirred through the leaves, carrying with it a deeper, almost musical resonance—one that vibrated directly in her chest.
"You’ve returned safely," the Great Tree’s voice rumbled softly through the roots. "And yet, curiosity will not wait. There is a thread to be gathered... a living light that belongs to a world beyond our own. Bioluminescent life. It is fragile. It is wise. And it is needed here."
Lira’s gaze lifted, determination brightening her features. "I understand. I’ll be careful." She rose, brushing moss from her sleeves, Fluffy hopping onto her shoulder.
The Great Tree shifted slightly, leaves glimmering like soft emerald fire. "The Grove cannot provide protection beyond this point. You must travel alone. Use the star dust... the thread you returned with from the Ruins World. Align it carefully with the portal. The journey will test your control, your understanding, and your respect for life."
Lira nodded. She reached into her satchel and carefully drew out a small vial of star-dust, swirling it in her fingers. It shimmered with soft silver and violet light, faintly warm against her palm. "I can do this," she whispered, more to herself than to the Grove. Fluffy chirped softly, as if encouraging her.
With precise movements, she sprinkled the dust in a slow spiral, tracing the hum of the Grove’s resonance. Light gathered in a column before her, shimmering violet and silver, twisting like liquid glass. The portal formed in a soft hum, edges rippling, particles of residue from past worlds lingering faintly within its frame.
Renkai appeared at her side, worry etched into his features. "Alone? Lira... the shadows... everything," he said, voice low, tension coiling tight.
She touched his hand briefly, smiling softly. "I’ll be careful. You’ve been here for every portal, every world... this time I need to see it myself. I promise I’ll return."
Serelyth hovered nearby, pearly wings flexing, tail curling nervously. "I’ve crossed worse, but even I don’t envy you this one. The bioluminescent worlds are subtle... delicate. Misstep and the life there can vanish before you understand it."
Fluffy leapt lightly from her shoulder to the ground, tail twitching toward the portal. Lira crouched to scoop him up again. "I’ve studied the resonance threads. I’ll be precise. I’ll protect them... and myself."
She stepped forward. The portal’s hum intensified, warming her chest, pulling at her senses in a swirl of color and light. Every particle seemed alive, curious, testing her intent. Lira closed her eyes briefly, focusing, letting the star dust guide her through.
A gentle, twisting tug, and then she was in motion. The familiar resonance of the Grove faded, replaced by the soft heartbeat of a new world, distant but alive.
The air shifted around her, cool and sweet, scented faintly of nectar and electricity. Tiny motes of glowing light floated lazily around her, illuminating a dense canopy above that pulsed softly in rhythm with some hidden life. The ground beneath shimmered faintly, every step leaving a delicate trace of soft light.
Lira took a deep breath, Fluffy curled snugly against her chest. She stepped cautiously forward, eyes wide with wonder. "So this is the Bioluminescent World..." she murmured. "Every plant, every vine... it’s alive. And... it’s calling to me."
Somewhere above, faint silhouettes of glowing creatures flitted between the trees, curious eyes shining in soft pulses. Lira’s heart raced. This world was beautiful... fragile... alive in a way the Grove itself had never been. And now it was her responsibility.
One careful step at a time, she moved deeper into the glowing forest, guided by the whispers of the flora, the soft hum of life, and the promise of the Grove waiting for her safe return.
The canopy opened to reveal a surreal landscape: towering mushrooms stretched toward the sky, their caps glowing in shifting hues of blue, violet, and soft gold. Tiny spores floated lazily in the air, catching the light like delicate fireflies, drifting in currents invisible to the eye.
Lira inhaled cautiously—and immediately felt a tickle in her throat. A fine haze of spores clung to the air, shimmering faintly with bioluminescent particles. She pulled a soft, fabric mask from her space satchel, covering her mouth and nose. The texture was light, breathable, yet effective against the floating haze.
Fluffy leapt down from her shoulder, tail curling nervously as he sniffed the air. "Don’t worry, little one," Lira whispered, patting him gently. "We’ll be careful."
With measured steps, she walked among the mushrooms. Some glowed softly from within, like pulsing lanterns. Others exuded a faint hum when touched, resonating in harmony with the surrounding spores. Every movement released a cloud of sparkling dust, curling upward like tiny ribbons of light.
Her fingers brushed against the cap of a massive violet mushroom, the surface warm to the touch, and it trembled slightly, almost as if acknowledging her presence. She scribbled notes quickly in her journal, carefully avoiding kicking up clouds of spores with her feet.
Above her, the faint silhouettes of glowing insects flitted among the stems, their wings leaving arcs of soft luminescence in the air. Tiny, semi-sentient fungi roots shifted subtly under the ground as if they could feel her passage, nudging against each other in quiet whispers.
"This world... it’s alive in a way I haven’t seen before," Lira murmured, eyes wide. "Every mushroom, every spore... it’s like it’s breathing."
The air grew thicker in some areas, the spores denser, shimmering gold in the soft glow. Lira adjusted her mask and slowed her steps, weaving carefully through the towering fungi. She spotted clusters of smaller, seed-like spores at the base of a glowing tree mushroom. Carefully, she crouched, extending a gloved hand to collect a few samples, storing them safely in her space satchel.
Fluffy padded behind her, careful not to disturb the delicate forest floor, occasionally sniffing at stray spores before shaking his head and moving on.
"This place... it’s breathtaking," Lira whispered, her eyes reflecting the soft glow all around. "But I need to focus. I need to find the plants that can survive in the Grove... without destroying it."
As she moved deeper, the forest opened into a faint clearing. Here, the mushrooms formed natural arches and tunnels, soft bioluminescent curtains draping from the caps above. Light shimmered like liquid glass, casting faint, dancing shadows across the spore-laden ground.
The forest seemed to hum in anticipation, alive and watching. And Lira knew that every careful step she took would be the difference between success and unintended harm.
Lira stepped lightly over the soft mossy ground, her mask filtering the dense spores drifting lazily around her. Tiny mushrooms, unlike anything she’d seen before, sprouted in irregular clusters. Their caps shimmered in strange, almost impossible colors—neon teal with streaks of magenta, soft amber that seemed to pulse faintly, and a deep violet that flickered like liquid. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
She knelt, carefully reaching toward a small teal mushroom, extending a gloved hand.
And just as her fingers brushed the cap—it vanished. Not tipped over, not crushed... gone, leaving only a faint wisp of glowing spores hanging in the air.
"Wait—what?!" Lira whispered, blinking. She crouched lower, trying again, this time aiming for a tiny magenta mushroom curling near a violet cluster. Her hand hovered.
The moment she touched it—the same thing happened. Poof. Gone. The mushroom seemed to dissolve into the air itself, leaving her hand empty and tingling slightly from a strange, soft static.
Fluffy circled her feet nervously, ears twitching at every shimmer of the disappearing fungi. "Even you can see it, little one," Lira murmured, scratching behind his ears. "Something about this forest doesn’t want to be taken... yet."
Serelyth wasn’t here this time—Lira was alone—but she whispered to herself, almost for comfort, "Maybe it’s semi-sentient... like the ruins vines. Or maybe... it’s a defense mechanism."
She crouched lower, observing. The mushrooms seemed to flicker in and out of existence, shimmering in the air for a heartbeat before vanishing. Lira tried a gentle trick: she didn’t reach for them. Instead, she extended her hand near a neon teal cap and let her fingers hover. The mushroom trembled, its glow deepening, but it did not vanish.
"Ah," Lira murmured, realization dawning. "It reacts to intent. If I reach... it disappears. If I show patience... it stays."
Taking a deep breath, she slowed her movements, allowing her fingers to brush near the mushrooms without touching them. Slowly, carefully, she reached with the tip of her journal—a neutral, non-threatening object. The teal mushroom shimmered brighter, letting her gently scoop a single spore cluster into a small container in her satchel.
"That’s it," she whispered, a mix of relief and awe in her voice. "They’re delicate... sensitive. I can’t just take them. I need to respect them."
The forest pulsed around her, faint whispers of light and spores brushing against her mask. It was alive, observant, almost playful. And Lira couldn’t help but laugh softly. "You’re teaching me patience... alright. Lesson one."
Fluffy purred at her feet, nudging her hand toward another flickering mushroom. Lira smiled, reaching slowly, carefully, and collected a second spore cluster, storing it safely. Each movement was a dance—one wrong step, and the mushrooms dissolved back into the forest.
This bioluminescent world wasn’t just a mission. It was a teacher. And Lira was ready to learn.
