Born as a Witch
Chapter 477: The laws between worlds
The surface of starlight beneath their feet shimmered softly as the figures approached.
They were tall—taller than any being Lira had ever seen—and their forms were not solid in the way ordinary creatures were. Their bodies seemed made of flowing constellations, shifting slowly like galaxies breathing in the dark.
Where their faces should have been, there were only clusters of bright stars.
Yet when they spoke, their voices were clear.
Ancient.
Calm.
"Lira of the Grove."
The words echoed gently through the vast star space.
Lira straightened, still holding Fluffy against her chest. Renkai remained beside her, his hand resting lightly on her shoulder. Serelyth and Thalanir stood close, silently watching the luminous beings before them.
One of the Guardians stepped forward, its body glowing with slow spirals of silver and blue.
"You called upon us for answers."
Lira nodded.
"Yes. I... need to understand what is happening. The shadows are appearing more often. Worlds feel unstable when I travel. And the Grove—"
She gestured slightly.
"—I only wanted to bring life and knowledge from other worlds."
The stars within the Guardian shifted.
"We know."
Another Guardian stepped forward, its light softer but deeper, like distant nebulae.
"Your intentions are not malicious. They are curious. Hopeful. Generous."
Lira relaxed slightly.
But the first Guardian continued.
"However, intentions alone do not protect the balance of worlds."
The words were not harsh.
But they carried weight.
"Balance?" Serelyth asked, folding her arms.
The Guardian turned its starlight gaze toward her.
"Every world grows according to its own laws. Its own rhythm. Its own life."
Constellations shifted above them, forming brief images in the sky.
A glowing mushroom forest.
Floating islands.
Crystal landscapes.
The ruined world Lira had visited.
"When travelers move between worlds, they must do so lightly. Observing. Learning. Leaving the balance untouched."
The stars changed again.
Now the image showed Lira gathering spores.
Seeds.
Saplings.
Fragments of other ecosystems.
"You did not only observe."
Lira lowered her gaze slightly.
"You gathered."
Another Guardian continued.
"You planted."
A vision appeared above them of the Grove slowly filling with plants from many different worlds—glowing mushrooms, strange vines, exotic seeds.
"You began creating something new."
Lira hesitated.
"I thought... it would be beautiful. A place where many worlds could live together."
Renkai glanced at her softly.
One of the Guardians nodded slowly.
"It is a beautiful idea."
Lira looked up again, surprised.
"But beauty does not remove consequence."
The star-space darkened slightly.
A new image appeared above them.
Portals opening.
Stardust swirling.
Worlds touching where they should remain separate.
"Every portal bends the natural boundaries between worlds."
Another Guardian spoke.
"Every object carried across those boundaries disturbs the balance of both worlds involved."
Lira felt a slow knot forming in her stomach.
"And the shadows?" she asked quietly.
The constellations shifted again.
Now a darker presence appeared between the worlds—thin cracks spreading like fractures through space.
"The shadows are not simply creatures."
"They are symptoms."
Serelyth frowned.
"Symptoms of what?"
The Guardian answered.
"Of imbalance."
The image above them showed worlds pressing slightly against each other where portals had been opened repeatedly.
"When boundaries weaken, certain forces are drawn to the fractures."
Another Guardian continued.
"Shadows thrive where balance collapses."
Lira slowly understood.
"So... every time I open a portal..."
"You stretch the barrier between worlds."
"And when I bring things back?"
"You weave those worlds together where they were never meant to connect."
Lira looked down at Fluffy, who blinked up at her curiously.
Her voice grew quieter.
"I was trying to build something... special."
The first Guardian stepped closer.
Its light softened.
"Your vision is not wrong."
"But it is incomplete."
Above them the stars formed another image.
This time not of imbalance.
But of a bridge—a stable connection between worlds, carefully built rather than forced open.
"To unite worlds safely requires knowledge. Anchors. Agreements between the forces that govern them."
Thalanir spoke quietly.
"You mean... it must be done properly."
"Yes."
Renkai tightened his grip slightly on Lira’s hand.
"And until then?"
The Guardian answered.
"Until then, every uncontrolled portal increases danger."
Lira closed her eyes briefly.
"So I put everyone at risk."
The Guardian did not deny it.
"You placed yourself, your companions, and your Grove in danger."
Another voice added gently:
"But you also did something few beings attempt."
The stars brightened again.
"You sought connection between worlds."
The Guardian’s gaze returned to her.
"That is not a crime."
"But it requires wisdom equal to your curiosity."
Lira exhaled slowly.
"So what do I do now?"
For a moment, the vast star space remained silent.
Then the Guardians spoke together, their voices overlapping like a chorus of distant galaxies.
"Pause your journeys."
"Study the laws between worlds."
"Learn how to open portals without tearing the fabric between realms."
"And when you travel again... you will do so as a keeper of balance, not a collector of wonders."
The constellations slowly shifted back to their natural positions.
The Guardians’ light dimmed slightly.
But one final message remained.
"Lira of the Grove..."
"You have already attracted the attention of the shadows."
The stars above flickered faintly.
"If balance is not restored... they will follow you everywhere you go."
Silence fell across the endless star plain.
Lira stood very still.
Renkai squeezed her hand gently.
Serelyth looked thoughtful rather than afraid.
Thalanir watched the moving constellations carefully.
And somewhere deep in Lira’s mind, a new realization was beginning to form.
Exploring worlds...
would never be simple again.
The star-space shimmered around them, gentle currents of starlight rippling across the vast nothingness. The Guardians’ constellations pulsed softly, signaling the finality of their message.
"You have heard us, Lira." Their voices resonated through the space like a song of galaxies. "Balance must guide your travels. Intent alone is not enough."
Lira nodded, feeling the weight of their words pressing both on her mind and her heart. Fluffy pressed against her legs, sensing her tension, while Renkai kept a steady hand on her shoulder, a silent anchor. Serelyth’s wings flexed slightly as she hovered nearby, ears attuned to the shifting light.
One Guardian stepped forward, the constellations along its body spiraling outward in patterns of gentle blue and silver.
"We return you to the Grove now. But know this: every portal you open, every world you touch, we will observe."
"Observe?" Lira asked softly, her voice just above a whisper.
"Yes." Another Guardian’s form flickered briefly, stars spinning faster across its body. "Not to punish. Not to stop. But to ensure the fabric between worlds remains intact."
Renkai tightened his grip slightly. "So... they’re like... cosmic chaperones?" he asked, voice laced with humor and concern. "Watching every step you take?"
"In a manner of speaking, yes." The Guardians’ voices harmonized, soft as a distant comet’s tail. "Your curiosity and courage are gifts. But gifts without understanding bring shadows."
Lira exhaled slowly, tucking Fluffy closer to her chest. "I understand. I... I’ll be careful. I’ll think about consequences before I act. I won’t just jump into worlds without learning their rules first."
The Guardians pulsed brighter for a moment, as if approving. "You have promise, Lira of the Grove. But promise alone is not protection. Wisdom is the key."
Another ripple of starlight swept over them, brushing through Renkai, Serelyth, and Thalanir, filling them with a faint sense of cosmic awareness.
"Return now. Carry our warning with you."
The star-space swirled around them, a column of light forming like a living ribbon of energy. Lira took a deep breath, clutching her journal tightly and holding Fluffy gently. Renkai, Serelyth, and Thalanir formed close around her, ready to follow.
The ribbon of starlight embraced them, warm but firm, tugging them gently as if guiding them through space itself. The colors of the stars stretched and twisted, spiraling around until the familiar scent of moss and earth brushed Lira’s senses.
Within moments, they tumbled softly onto the forest floor of the Grove. The Great Tree’s bark rustled above them, its leaves brushing lightly like a comforting hand. The portal behind them shimmered once, then collapsed silently.
Lira opened her eyes, blinking at the familiar greens and golds of the Grove, her heart still racing from the weight of the star guardians’ words. Fluffy hopped lightly onto her lap, nuzzling her chin.
Renkai crouched beside her immediately. "You’re okay?" he asked, scanning her quickly but gently. "Everywhere you went... and back again... you’re safe?"
"I am," Lira said softly, hugging him, feeling his warmth ground her. "But... we have a lot to think about. About every portal, every world. We can’t be careless anymore."
Serelyth’s tail flicked thoughtfully as she settled nearby, wings folding slowly. "Sounds like the stars themselves are now keeping score. We’ll have to be extra cautious."
Thalanir’s voice rumbled softly. "And even with all our care... Lira, the shadows won’t wait. They will follow if the balance continues to break."
The Great Tree’s deep, resonant voice filled the Grove. "Let this be a moment of reflection, child. All growth must be tempered with wisdom. The threads you weave are fragile. Do not rush them."
Lira knelt, gently placing her hands on the soft moss, feeling its pulse, feeling the pulse of the Grove beneath her fingers. "I understand," she whispered. "I’ll find a way... a safe way. A way that respects every world I visit."
Fluffy purred in agreement, brushing against her arm, while Renkai squeezed her hand once more. Serelyth and Thalanir hovered nearby, silent but vigilant.
The Grove was calm. The portal was gone. But the presence of the star guardians lingered in Lira’s mind, a gentle reminder that the cosmos was watching—and that every journey forward would carry both wonder and responsibility.
And somewhere deep in her heart, Lira felt a spark of determination. She would continue exploring... but this time, she would do so as a true keeper of balance.
