Chapter 22: Bad Timing

The group were two blocks from home when Maya stopped walking.

Michael noticed because the pulse tracker showed her position halt and he turned around and she was standing in the middle of the street looking east with the expression she wore when she was very interested in something she saw.

"Maya," Sera said.

"That warehouse," Maya said, pointing east down a side street about half a block long that opened into a wider road beyond. The building she was pointing at was visible from the junction, it was a large flat roofed structure with reinforced shutters on the ground floor windows and a loading bay on the side that was sealed. "That’s a medical supply warehouse."

Michael looked at it. "How do you know."

"The loading bay configuration and the ventilation units on the roof. That’s a cold storage ventilation. Most likely a pharmaceutical cold storage." She looked at him. "Dr. Kang has three items on her list that need refrigerated storage. The hospital didn’t have them because the cold chain broke when the power went out. That building might still have backup power running."

He ran the pulse toward it. The building showed two signatures inside, probably at the ground floor moving slow. They were probably Rotters by the feel of them. The street between here and the loading bay was clear.

He looked at the four duffel bags between them.

"We can drop the bags," Sera said, reading his face. "And come back for them later, you know how Dr.Kang is when she doesn’t get what she wants."

"We’re not leaving the bags," Michael said.

"Then we’ll carry them."

Maya was already looking at him with the expression that had a yes inside it waiting to come out and he looked at Shin who met his eyes with a quiet steady look that meant she was ready for whatever he decided and he looked at the warehouse and then at his SP balance.

Two thousand three hundred and forty, it was enough to get out of any trouble if they came across any.

"We have just ten minutes to spend here," he said. "In and out."

Maya turned east before he finished the sentence.

The loading bay door had a keypad lock that the override tool handled in under a minute and they slipped inside and Michael pulled it shut behind them and ran the pulse through the interior.

There was two Rotters on the ground floor at the east side of the building. A long central corridor running the length of the warehouse with storage bays on either side, most of them sealed. And at the far end, past the Rotter positions, a set of heavy insulated doors that had the particular look of cold storage.

A generator was running somewhere in the building, although it was quiet and barely made much noise you could tell it was there with a low hum that he felt more than heard.

"The cold storage is still active," Maya said, hearing the same hum.

"We have to deal with the Rotters first," Sera said as everyone agreed nodding their head heading towards the location of the Rotters to deal with them.

The two Rotters went down easily and fast in the east corridor and Michael was opening the first cold storage bay when the pulse caught something that made him stop with his hand on the door handle.

There was movement but this time it didn’t seem like that of the Rotters. It felt as if they knew where to move and were doing it on purpose, it was coming from the north end of the warehouse where a second entrance that he hadn’t mapped from outside opened into the loading area.

There were six signatures there moving quietly as if they were hiding from whatever was outside.

He turned around.

They came through the north entrance in a loose group, five men and two women, and they moved like people who had been doing this long enough to be comfortable with it.

They spread out and covered specific angles, the body language of a group with an established hierarchy and a leader who walked at the front like the space rearranged itself around him.

The leader was big. Not Hulk big but big in the way that men got big when they had spent years making sure other people noticed it.

He was broad shouldered and had a heavy set, with a face that had settled into a permanent expression of someone who expected to get what he wanted and usually did.

He had a proper firearm on his hip, a handgun, and two of the men behind him had bats and one had a length of chain and the two women in the group were at the back and not making eye contact with anything.

Michael noticed that last part.

The leader’s eyes went across the four of them, across the duffel bags, across the cold storage doors and then settled on Michael with the evaluating look of someone doing arithmetic.

"I didn’t know anyone else knew about this place," the leader said. His voice was the kind of easy and relaxed that wasn’t actually easy or relaxed at all.

"We just found it," Michael said.

"Funny." The leader looked at the bags. "Looks like you’ve been busy today."

"Yeah we were."

"Hm." He took a few steps forward with his hands loose at his sides and the men behind him spread slightly, ready to move in and ambush their group at any second which was enough to change the geometry of the room.

"Here’s the thing. This warehouse is ours and has been since week all of this started. So whatever’s in those bags and whatever’s in that cold storage is also ours."

Michael looked at him and then looked at the two women at the back of the group who still hadn’t looked up.

They were in a very dangerous situation at the moment, Micheal was currently outnumbered in man power and numbers so he couldn’t be rough about how he handled it or else it could go very bad for them.

"We’ll take what we came for and go," Michael said.

The leader smiled but it didn’t quite reach anything above his mouth. "See I don’t think that’s how this works."

He nodded at the man with the chain and things got fast after that.
