Chapter 71: Blast Walls And Small Things (II)

The north interior blast wall completed at three in the afternoon.

Michael stood in the lobby and looked at it and felt the turret coverage analysis update in the Blueprint Interface overlay, the gap closing fully, the north face defense picture becoming what it needed to be.

Shin was beside him.

She had been on the anchor point coordination all day with Rei and the wall was clean because of it, no misaligned sections, no anchor depth variations, every panel seated correctly and confirmed before the next one went in.

He looked at the wall and thought about Shin walking the floors alone three days ago looking for defensive gaps and arriving at this exact place by a route that had nothing to do with being told to.

"Good work today," he said.

She looked at the wall. "It was straightforward once you explained the sequence," she said.

"It wasn’t straightforward," he said. "You made it look that way."

She looked at him and the warmth was there again, unguarded, and she looked back at the wall. "Rei was better at the anchor checks than me by the third section," she said. "Her hands are steadier."

"I noticed," he said.

"She noticed too," Shin said. "She didn’t say anything about it but she stood differently after the third section. Like something had settled."

He thought about Rei’s quiet voice through the barracks door last night when Shin had told her about the placement role and the particular quality of someone being given something to hold.

He pulled up the Bond Store and looked at what Rei’s BP was sitting at.

[Current BP: 4 — Rei.]

The next unlock was at five.

He looked at the blast wall and at Shin beside him and at the lobby around them with the gate closed and the advanced turrets running their arcs above and the building full of people behind them.

"South face tomorrow," he said.

"We’ll be there," Shin said simply.

Anya found Michael at four with the clipboard and the updated supply projection that accounted for the blast wall material costs and the advanced turret installation and the greenhouse temperature regulation upgrade he’d done yesterday and the revised consumption rates from the new population baseline.

She handed it to him and stood beside him while he read it.

The numbers were tight but functional. The greenhouse coming online fully in eight days changed the caloric picture meaningfully.

The stockroom reserve covered the gap period.

The medical supply consumption rate had stabilized since Dr. Kang had reorganized the clinic stock in a way that reduced waste from expiry overlap.

There was a note at the bottom of the third page in Anya’s precise handwriting.

[Underground expansion material cost at expanded tier — 1,200 SP. Current SP balance at projected acquisition rate covers this in 4 days. Recommend prioritizing before east and west blast wall faces given the timeline uncertainty. The east and west faces are the secondary defensive layer. The underground expansion is the final fallback. Sequence accordingly

He read the note twice.

She was right. He had been sequencing east and west blast walls before the underground expansion because the walls were the more visible defensive upgrade and the expansion felt more distant.

But the expansion was the layer that mattered most if everything else failed and the timeline uncertainty she’d noted was real.

He looked at her.

She was looking at the clipboard in his hands waiting for him to finish reading.

"The sequencing note," he said.

"I thought about it this morning during the materials run," she said. "The blast walls improve the defensive picture but they’re a delay layer not a final layer.

The underground expansion is the final layer. Final layers should be built before the situation forces you to need them."

He looked at the note and then at the Blueprint Interface and then at Anya.

"You’re right," he said.

She nodded. "I usually am about sequencing," she said, without arrogance, just accurately, the same way she said everything.

He updated the build queue. Underground expansion moved to immediately after the north interior face. East and west blast walls after.

"Updated," he said.

She made a note on the clipboard and went back to the workbench.

[Bond Event — She Saw The Sequence: Anya. +1 Bond Point. Current BP: 7 — Anya.]

---

The evening was quieter than the previous ones.

Not because anything was wrong, just because the particular intensity of a full materials day had used up the social energy of most of the building and people were settling into their corners earlier than usual. Cole’s group was on Floor 5, already down by eight. Damon’s four were in their apartments. Gareth’s men were in 607 and the hallway outside it was quiet.

Michael sat on the floor in his spot and looked at the build queue and the SP balance and the timeline.

Underground expansion started tomorrow. North shaft and chamber first, primary access through the northeast ground floor, secondary access on the west face. Expanded tier. Twelve hundred SP. He had it.

The thought of having a final fallback layer in the ground beneath the building that could hold everyone if the wall and the blast walls and the turrets and everything above ground failed was the most significant improvement to the building’s survivability he could make in the current window and he should have started it sooner and he was starting it tomorrow.

He pulled up the chamber specifications and looked at the capacity and the air circulation system and the supply storage integration and the communication link to the ground floor panel that would let him monitor the pulse from underground if it came to that.

Sera came and sat across from him at nine.

She had the training session notes from the day on a piece of paper that she’d started keeping since the variant Stalker profile work began and she looked at them and then at him.
