Campus Ace Girl
Chapter 921: It’s Over, There’s No One to Succeed
When Gu Anxi woke up again, it was already eight in the evening.
Bo Xichen was keeping watch over her, Bo Dad, Bo Mom and the old man were all there as well, and King Jingyao was right outside, giving instructions to Chen Ming while waiting for any news from in here.
Lin Hua was there too, her face a little pale. She had a feeling these people had come for her, or that it had something to do with Feng Sheng, but Jingyao said no, said it was just those bastards from Beicheng, and as for which bunch of bastards exactly, he couldn’t say.
She couldn’t get anything out of him, so she could only hold it in, and at the same time she felt a bit guilty.
Afraid something would happen to Anxi—even though she was fine now, she’d taken such a serious injury.
She also knew King Jingyao had been scared stiff, and luckily Anxi’s heart grew just a tiny bit off to the side, or the consequences would have been unthinkable.
Once Chen Ming went off to handle things and King Jingyao finally calmed down, he lit a cigarette to steady his nerves.
Just then a delighted voice came from inside: "Anxi’s awake, Anxi’s awake."
Old Brother Wang immediately stubbed out his cigarette. "Come on, let’s go in and have a look."
The couple went in together. Gu Anxi was awake, but after her eyes were open for a bit, she closed them again in discomfort.
Bo Xichen spoke in a low voice: "Do you want a little water?"
She hummed a yes.
She drank a little while lying flat. Her hand shifted a bit and caught Little Uncle Bo’s hand, loosely holding on and refusing to let go.
Bo Nianyao and Lin Yun exchanged a look, and Lin Yun said a sincere "Thank heavens," then her eyes went red.
If anything happened to this little one, she really wouldn’t know how to go on living.
Mrs. Bo stepped forward and touched the little one’s head, speaking softly: "Bear with it a bit longer, you can eat tomorrow."
As she spoke, she couldn’t help scolding: "You scared your Bo Dad and me half to death. Such a good little girl, and you just had to rush to the front. Blocking bullets is a job for the menfolk."
King Jingyao felt very much called out, and rubbed his nose.
Gu Anxi gave a faint laugh and said with her eyes closed, "I’m just used to protecting the weak."
Mrs. Bo snorted lightly: "What weak? She kicks you once and you still don’t learn your lesson?"
She was, after all, heartbroken over the child, which was why she dragged this up again. Gu Anxi just smiled and used her little face to nuzzle Mrs. Bo’s hand, and Mrs. Bo’s heart ached even more. "All right, all right, I’ll stop. You, you’re all sharp tongue and soft heart. You put people in your heart and then worry they won’t appreciate it. Ai, I’m just getting old and naggy."
She stopped talking, and King Jingyao didn’t hold it against her. He came over and sat down by the bed, reaching out to hold Gu Anxi’s hand, his voice hoarse: "Does it hurt?"
Gu Anxi shook her head and looked at him.
King Jingyao’s voice grew even hoarser: "How could it not hurt, you silly child!"
He let out a long breath, then said, "From now on, don’t be this stupid again. Your Bo Mom is right too."
Gu Anxi kept looking at him.
King Jingyao gave a wry smile. "It’s my fault."
He ruffled her hair. "I didn’t trust you enough. I wronged you, and I wronged Zhou Yunchen too. Starting tomorrow, I’ll have him come back to the General Office."
Gu Anxi smiled very faintly.
Everyone present was quite moved. What a deeply affectionate brother-sister scene this was.
Only one person felt differently, and that was Mrs. Bo, who was rolling her eyes to the heavens.
Heh, after the way you treated my little one before, now look at you—at the critical moment it’s my little one blocking bullets for you, you old geezer!
Anyway, since she was fine, King Jingyao’s and Lin Hua’s wedding was not going to happen. The papers were signed, though, and after some discussion they decided to skip the ceremony and just drink the nuptial wine and get on with life as an old married couple.
By the time they got back to the villa, it was already deep into the night.
Lin Hua came out after her shower and saw King Jingyao sitting on the sofa in a quiet daze. She walked over and sat meekly beside him. "What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing much." He gave a faint smile, reached out to touch her hair, and said very gently, "You were scared badly today, weren’t you?"
Lin Hua shook her head, then half-kneeled in front of him and wrapped her arms around his waist.
After a long while, she finally spoke softly: "Jingyao, after today I feel like I’m really useless. Anxi’s different, she’s amazing... Doesn’t it hurt her?"
King Jingyao’s emotions were all tangled. He leaned his head against the back of the sofa and gently stroked his wife’s hair, his voice rough: "She’s the most afraid of pain. Just one kick and she’s held a grudge against me for a whole month."
Lin Hua fell silent. She knew he was feeling terrible and deeply guilty toward Anxi.
She just stayed with him, all the way until the middle of the night when he finally went to shower.
Early the next morning, King Jingyao went straight to the General Office and called in Wang Jingchuan to handle things for him.
Secretary-General Wang came back and sighed as well: "Yesterday was really close."
King Jingyao lit a cigarette. "Wasn’t it just! But luckily that little brat’s blessed with good fortune. She’s out of danger now. It’s just that her body was already weak, so now she’s really going to need to recuperate."
Wang Jingchuan nodded. "Yes, yes, she really needs to recuperate."
He then looked at his superior. "I’ve done some preliminary digging on this. It can’t be separated from Italy."
King Jingyao nodded, smoking as he pondered aloud, "Tighten up security around Beicheng these days. And over there, speed things up a bit. Once the dragon’s head is gone, the waves won’t rise."
A hint of ferocity flashed in his eyes.
Wang Jingchuan nodded.
Once that was said, King Jingyao brought up something else. "Right, notify Zhou Yunchen to come report back to the General Office—same position as before."
At that, Secretary-General Wang looked a bit troubled. "Sir, I don’t think I have that kind of pull. Mr. Zhou might not want to come."
"Who turns down a good thing like this?" King Jingyao slanted him a look. "Aren’t you thinking a bit too highly of him?"
Wang Jingchuan answered honestly, "He’s doing very well at An Pu. He’s got all the wealth and glory he could want. If he comes back here to you, he’ll just get chewed out again."
Those brutally honest words really pissed King Jingyao off. He kicked out at him. "From now on he’ll be able to do whatever he wants. I don’t believe anyone can resist that kind of temptation. Hurry up and call him."
Secretary-General Wang felt terribly wronged, but the other party was his boss, so he could only swallow it and make the call.
Once the call was done, he came back to report. "Well, Mr. Zhou really didn’t agree."
King Jingyao stood up. "He said outright he’s not coming back?"
"Not exactly." Wang Jingchuan chuckled. "Here’s what happened— I’d barely gotten a few words out, and someone as smart as Mr. Zhou probably guessed what I was calling for, then came up with all sorts of ways to turn me down. Sir, what do you think we should do?"
King Jingyao glared at him. "How should I know?"
Secretary-General Wang had suffered for nothing, but he couldn’t do anything about it—guy was his superior after all—so he could only rub his nose and take it.
Right then, Old Brother Wang glanced at the Secretary-General again and said in a low voice, "No one to take over the mantle."
Wang Jingchuan almost burst out laughing, but in the end he managed to hold it in.
It took King Jingyao a good while to calm down, then he said, "Let’s put it aside for now. I’ll talk to him myself later."
