Chapter 401: Pushed to the brim

Amelia wasn’t doing much better than Natalia. Lucien had made special arrangements for her in prison. She was sent to the most dangerous prison in the country, holding the most hardened criminals. Most of those criminals had strong ties with the underworld.

He made several arrangements with all the top factions within the prison, offering money and protection to anyone they wanted outside, all for one thing, for them to take special care of Amelia.

That wasn’t all. Every staff member in the prison was aware of Amelia’s special condition, and naturally, they turned a blind eye to her suffering and only stepped in when she was close to dying.

The first day she was moved from jail to prison, she was still bratty, thinking her parents overseas could pull some strings for her.

Amelia was led to a room. It wasn’t even a proper room. Normally, in this prison, it was two to a room, but hers was different. In the small enclosed space, there were six people staying in a space meant for two.

There was no bed. She was just given a very thin blanket and pillow. She refused to go in, throwing a fit, but no one batted an eye.

She was forced into that room, having no idea everyone in it had been paid generously to entertain her. The moment the door shut behind her, the thin blanket and pillow were taken from her.

She tried to fight, but a five versus one match was unfair. After being beaten half unconscious, she curled up in a corner, cursing. The biggest woman in the room walked up to her and spat on her face. "Welcome to hell, rich girl." And hell it was.

At first, it started with bullying before things slowly escalated. The entire prison was against her. Amelia became the punching bag whenever anyone was in a bad mood, and the guards might even reward the person after beating her.

She was always given the hardest work, the smallest portions of food, sometimes even spoiled. She was completely isolated, not because she was the worst prisoner, no, but simply because anyone who so much as treated her like a human paid for it.

One day during lunch, she was so weak she could barely move. Her legs were injured from a previous fight.

While moving to a quiet corner where she ate on the floor because no one let her share a table, she accidentally stepped on someone’s foot. Instinctively, she dropped to her knees and started banging her head on the floor, terrified of another beating.

"I am sorry... I am sorry..." she repeated over and over again until her head bled. A new inmate couldn’t watch and stepped in to help her.

Everyone went silent. Even Amelia was shocked someone showed her pity. At this point, she was nothing like the proud rich girl she once was.

The next day, the person who helped her "accidentally" broke her hand. Everyone called it an accident, but they all knew the truth.

She couldn’t look anyone in the eye, scared it would cost her another beating. On several occasions, she tried reaching out to her parents, and the day she finally could, she heard her mother’s voice screaming at her never to call them again.

That was the last straw that broke her. She realised no one was coming to help her, and it was a life sentence. Her mind fractured. She started self harming, hoping it would amuse the others and they would give her a break.

Amelia was perfectly sane, but the harsh conditions drove her mad. She started developing suicidal tendencies and deliberately starting fights, hoping they would beat her to death, but unfortunately for her, Lucien wanted her to live a long life.

Months passed. On a cold, rainy night, she was huddled in a corner, crying quietly on the cold floor. She dared not make a sound.

Then suddenly, she burst into a roaring laugh, waking everyone. "What the hell is wrong with you?" one of her roommates barked.

Amelia stood up, laughing. She didn’t answer anyone and started chanting

"I hate you..."

"I hate you..."

"I fucking hate you..."

She let out a shrieking scream and surged forward. She was seeing red. She shoved everyone in front of her with an abnormal strength her malnourished body shouldn’t have possessed.

She charged like a bull, headfirst, and ran into the wall with all her strength. Maybe it was her willpower to escape the torture. It took one impact, and her head split open, blood spraying out.

Screams erupted from the cell as her body collapsed to the floor, bleeding.

Amelia stared blankly at the ceiling. In her final moments, everything faded, and her mind drifted back to that day...

Back in senior secondary school, Lucien and Raphael were both popular, not just because of their devastating looks, but also their background. Among the top class, they were considered the pinnacle.

Raphael was on the hockey team. Although he wasn’t the captain, he was more popular than every other member. He was also the top student, holding first position for years.

A lot of girls had crushes on him, but no one dared confess because he was too perfect, placed on a pedestal.

The only person who ever confessed was turned down. Raphael gave a simple reason, he was engaged and focused on his studies.

Rumours said his fiancée was from another school. No one knew her, but they were all envious.

Opposite to the cold Raphael was the fiery Lucien. His grades were poor, just good enough to move classes. Lucien was the opposite of everything Raphael was. He got suspended so many times that Gregor had to donate a building to keep him from being expelled.

Despite this bad boy persona, Lucien was the number one heartthrob. He received confessions daily, and Amelia, she had the biggest crush on Lucien since she knew what love was.

It all started one day during a party. Amelia’s mother had a reputation for being a gold digger, simply because she was an actress who schemed her way into marrying Mr Sinclair, who already had an engagement.

Some children were making fun of her that day, calling her names. She was curled up, crying and completely helpless. She couldn’t fight back because she was socially awkward from constant bullying.

While crying for a saviour, he arrived. Lucien. He was barely a teenager, but he charged in with pure rage and beat every one of those children. Lucien was untamed.

After they all ran away crying, young Lucien stood in front of Amelia and offered his hand.

"Please don’t cry. It ruins your pretty eyes."

He said it just to stop her tears, but to Amelia, it meant everything.

Staring at that carefree smile, she fell hard for him. But the truth was, Lucien saved her on impulse and completely forgot her after that day.

Amelia became friends with Raphael and Natasha just to have more chances to see Lucien, but Lucien was distant from his family as the infamous black sheep.

Until the day of the final exams, when she finally gathered the courage to confess. Amelia was always delusional. She thought she was special.
