Chapter 190: Chapter 190: Superfluous

"..." She didn’t answer, just kept sobbing quietly.

Her crying only made him more irritated and heartbroken. "Stop crying, will you?!"

Mika Summers shuddered and stopped sobbing. She raised a hand to wipe away her tears, still silent as she turned away. Lowering her head, she pried his fingers, which were gripping her arm tightly, off one by one.

Tristan Grayson seemed completely frozen, his gaze fixed on her, complex emotions swirling within him. He watched her get out of the car and disappear from his sight. Suddenly, he clutched his chest. He didn’t know what was happening, but ever since she’d left, something inside him had been twisting into a knot, a sharp, violent pain... It hurt so much that he broke out in a cold sweat.

’I know I have no reason to make her stay,’ he thought. ’Maybe... it really is over between us...’

’But why... why does it hurt so much...’

Just then, the phone in his pocket rang. He tore his gaze away, pulled out the phone, and glanced at the screen. His brow furrowed in annoyance as he swiped to answer. "..."

Before he could speak, a gentle female voice came through the line. "Tristan, when are you coming to the hospital to keep me company?"

"..." Because of what had happened with Mika, he had completely forgotten his promise to go to the hospital and stay with Maggie Monroe.

Hearing no response, Maggie Monroe grew a little anxious and spoke again. "Tristan, are you there?"

"Yeah, I’m here," he finally answered, his voice low as he lowered his gaze.

"Tristan, I’m so scared here in the hospital all by myself..."

"I’ll have Lily Shaw come keep you company in a bit." After saying that, he hung up before Maggie Monroe could even respond.

He raised a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose, leaning back wearily against the car seat.

Back when he learned that Maggie Monroe had left him, he’d never felt this emotionally drained, this miserable. Back then, he had just been furious, enraged that other people had the audacity to meddle in his life.

His parents had looked down on Maggie Monroe’s background, despising her for having a father in prison and a mother who had broken up someone else’s family.

But he hadn’t cared how sordid Maggie Monroe’s family background was. All he’d cared about was whether she was the one he had fallen for at first sight.

But as more and more time passed, all he felt for Maggie Monroe was a sense of debt and responsibility, stemming from how his parents had forced her away all those years ago.

But now, it seemed even that small bit of debt and responsibility was gone.

He was actually starting to find her presence a burden.

Lately, whenever he was with Maggie Monroe, he no longer had his usual patience. He even dreaded being alone with her.

Often, he felt too drained to even respond to the things she said.

Just then, his phone rang again. He glanced down and saw it was Maggie Monroe calling.

He had a sudden urge not to answer. He just didn’t have the energy to talk to her anymore.

He rejected the call, then dialed Henry Archer and told him to have Lily Shaw go to the hospital to keep Maggie Monroe company.

After taking care of that, he tossed his phone onto the seat, pulled out the key, got out, and slammed the car door behind him.

He didn’t know where he was going. But his feet, as if of their own accord, began carrying him in the direction she had gone.

After walking for about ten minutes, he saw her, crouched by the corner of a wall.

Her face was deathly pale, and his heart clenched violently once more.

’What’s wrong with her? Is she not feeling well?’

At that thought, he clenched his fists, about to step toward her. But just as he took his first step, a dark figure ran past him.

"Mika Summers!"

Hearing the voice, the woman turned her head to look in their direction.

Seeing her turn to look, he quickly sidestepped and hid behind the wall.

He hadn’t gotten a clear look at the figure’s face, but he was certain of one thing: it was a man with neat, short, golden-blond hair.

’That’s right, a man!’

’So, is this man the reason she’s leaving me?’
