Eternal Night: Building an Empire from Scratch
Chapter 11: Agricultural Land
The dull grey-black fog clouded the entire fortress but the changes were clearly visible.
The light of the two ⟨Watch Tower⟩s burned brighter than before.
The light they covered reached as far as 20 meters, covering a wider area.
The Black Grassroots that were within the range were all burned, leaving behind ashes.
Edgar looked at the fortress walls that were almost completely broken by the Nightmare.
’I wonder, if I make the Fortress Walls, will they expand with the fortress?’
He rubbed his chin and decided not to think much of it.
Though, he hoped his hypothesis was true.
’I will spend a huge chunk of stones to create them....’
Without dwelling too much on the topic, Edgar walked close to the edge of the fortress area.
He chose a place that was hidden behind the ⟨Watch Tower⟩ and was hardly visible.
After narrowing down the margins and expanded area, Edgar fixed the place.
He took out two Nightmare Stones from his pocket and placed them on the ground.
With his will, both of them broke. White liquid swept out and submerged into the ground.
The affected ground began to change and became creamish in colour.
Edgar crouched down and touched the ⟨Agricultural Land⟩.
It was three metres wide and three metres long.
’Small but it’s more than enough for me.’
Edgar stood up and walked to where the Black Grassroots had turned into ashes.
He picked up a few and rubbed them on the Nightmare Shard he got from the Snow Hand Rabbit’s Leader.
After that, he made a small hole and put the Shard into the ⟨Agricultural Land⟩.
’And now we wait for three days to get the results.’
With a satisfied nod, he focused on the rest of the free space.
At that moment, Oswald also walked towards him and looked at the creamish land.
"Young master...." Oswald mumbled softly. "Did you create an Agricultural Land?"
Edgar nodded casually. "Yeah."
"..."
Old man Oswald didn’t say anything. He had grown somewhat numb to his young master’s abilities.
Edgar turned to look at the old man and curiously asked. "What should we do with the rest of the space?"
Oswald thought for a few seconds while looking at the land.
"We can plant some seeds for crops that are easy to grow." He suggested. "Perhaps something that could be used daily."
Edgar’s lips curled up as he nodded. "Good idea."
He walked back inside his room and looked through the items given by the Yamhhad Clan.
He quickly found the packet that contained seeds used for garnish and spices.
Edgar was from Earth and he liked his food spicy. To eat tasteless porridge was nothing but torture to him.
’With spices, I can always have a backup to make my food good.’
He quickly brought out a handful of the spices and herbs.
Oswald had already begun plowing the ground to plant the seeds. Edgar helped him as well.
---
After completing the task, Edgar stretched his body and looked at the ⟨Agricultural Land⟩.
In only a few days, he would have an extra reserve of spices.
’Now, how do I deal with all the red meat?’
Edgar rubbed his sore back and walked back inside his room along with Oswald.
He sat down on the bed and looked at the old man. "What should I do with the meat?"
"We can store a portion of it underground." Oswald suggested. "I believe there is an underground storage in the fortress."
It was the month of August from what Edgar knew. The summer season had already gone by and the rainy season was close.
With the decreasing temperature, even though the meat would get spoiled, it could still last for some time.
Edgar nodded his head and added. "Can you call Lady Viera?"
Oswald nodded and walked out. After a while, he came back with the lady.
Lady Viera had heard about the box from her son before and when she looked at the contents, her eyes remained fixed on it.
Edgar didn’t mind it as he fixed his posture.
"Can you make a meat soup that could last us for a while?" He asked. "Once you are done with it, you are free to go."
The lady hesitated for a long while before nodding her head. "I can...."
"About that." Oswald intervened, garnering their attention. "Wouldn’t it be best if the lady stayed for a few more days?"
He looked at the middle-aged woman and said. "There is a high chance of those bandits still being around the area. If you head back now, you could get caught once again."
The lady’s face turned pale and her eyes moved violently.
"B-but I don’t have a choice." She stammered in response. "I don’t have any Nightmare Stones to pay..."
"You can pay by working here." Edgar suggested. "I really liked your food."
The lady’s expression turned complicated. She bit her lips and bowed her head.
For her, Edgar’s words felt like he was helping her out of pity.
She didn’t have the face to just stand there and take his kindness.
Though, Edgar genuinely enjoyed her food. It was much better than old man Oswald’s dishes.
After debating inwardly, she bowed deeply. "I will be in your care, my lord."
Edgar smiled and requested. "Please make a part of the meat into jerky."
She nodded her head. "I will get to work."
The lady quickly rushed out of the house and started a fire.
Inside the house, Oswald bowed his head. "I’m sorry for stepping out of my boundaries, young master." He said deeply. "But I do believe you need more help right now."
Edgar nodded his head. "I understand."
He dismissed the old man and not long after, Andrew walked in and slowly took everything out of the box.
Left alone in his room, Edgar rubbed his chin.
With nothing else to do, Edgar brought out his [Beast Trap].
’I need to prepare for the Eternal Night.’
Taking in a deep breath, Edgar decided to make a Level 2 [Beast Trap].
