Eternal Night: Building an Empire from Scratch
Chapter 4: Warning
The two soldiers were wearing bronze armour just like the Atreus Clan.
But unlike them, the soldiers had a sun with a face engraved on their armour.
’Soldiers of the Yamhad Clan....’
Edgar recognised them. The Yamhad Clan was a rival clan of the Atreus; they ruled over the southern region, which was the current region Edgar was in.
The soldiers were tall with crooked and pale-coloured skin. They both held long spears in their hands while they examined the place.
One of them walked towards Edgar with a haughty expression.
"This fortress was supposed to be abandoned." He probed with a doubtful look on his face. "Who are you and why are you running this place?"
At that moment, Oswald walked in front of Edgar and glared at the soldier.
"Have some respect!" he spat in anger. "He is the young master of the Atreus Clan!!"
The soldier blinked his eyes and squinted at Edgar before he started to laugh.
"Hahaha!! Banjo, look! He is the green hat Edgar!!"
The other soldier named Banjo laughed as well. "Yes! Yes! He is the guy whose fiancée was stolen in front of everyone!!"
Facing such ridicule, Edgar was extremely calm. The thing that happened to the previous Edgar had nothing to do with him.
He didn’t give a single damn about Velda and her schemes.
’Though, I will avenge you for what they did to you, Edgar Atreus.’
Even though Edgar wasn’t angry, the same couldn’t be said for Oswald.
He straightened his back and shot a deadly glare at the two soldiers.
"Dogshit!!" he cursed out loud. "It was my young master who threw that witch away!"
"Sure, old man." Banjo said with a wide grin. "I wonder if she was disappointed after seeing Edgar’s little Edgar."
"Hahaha!!"
His partner named Michi laughed loudly. He looked around the place and said, "Are you planning to make this your new home?"
Edgar looked at him and nodded. "Is there a problem?"
"Of course there is a problem!" Michi said in an exaggerated tone, like he was offended. "This place is already abandoned, and only a few kilometres away is my Yamhad Clan’s fortress. Why would anyone come here?"
Banjo also chimed in. "And even if you earn one Nightmare Stone from passengers or merchants on a full moon, how long are you going to survive with only that?"
Michi nodded his head, the smile on his face growing even more obvious. "How are you going to defend yourself against nightmare creatures like ’Humanoid Night’? They look and even act like humans."
"Once you mistake them for humans and bring them in, they will slaughter you and this old thing here."
Oswald glared at him, but he didn’t say anything as his young master stopped him.
At this point, both Banjo and Michi began to think of ways Edgar could die.
"There are also burglars and robbers," Banjo said, rubbing his chin. "He can be somewhat safe from them because if he dies, so will the Unbroken Fire, but this old man can be killed in an instant."
"Oh, and! Unbroken Fire doesn’t mean absolute safety. If there is a nightmare tide, he would die in no time." Michi said, clapping his hands. "With the fortress defence, I bet even a small tide is enough to kill them off."
Edgar looked around the place seriously. There wasn’t anything but broken walls in the name of defence.
"He could ask a Builder to upgrade his place. There is one Level 2 Builder in Soragon Bazaar."
Saying so, Banjo looked at Edgar from head to toe.
"But given how you got everything confiscated, good luck hiring him."
Michi waited for any type of reaction from the former young master, but when he noticed the calm and serene look on his face, he was thoroughly disappointed.
"We should go." He grunted. "We have already wasted enough time."
Banjo nodded his head with a gleeful smile. "Yeah, if we rush back fast enough, we might catch a glimpse of Lady Hera."
Edgar’s ears immediately pricked up. He had heard the name before but couldn’t remember it.
"Lady Hera?" he asked, looking at Banjo.
"She is the gem of our Yamhad Clan, daughter of Clan Leader Theo! The most beautiful woman in the world!"
Banjo said with a feverish look on his face.
"She is so beautiful that even those barbarian Nightmares get attracted to her."
Michi slapped Banjo’s chest with a smile. "Why bother telling dead meat about our young miss’ beauty?"
His grin made his face punchable.
"It’s not like he could ever breathe the same air as her."
Banjo laughed and turned around. "We will be here to collect your corpse, Green Hat Young Master."
They both laughed as they walked off into the dull grey-black fog towards the south.
Oswald, who was fuming in anger, let out a deep sigh. "Don’t mind those arrogant fools, young master."
Edgar chuckled and shook his head. "As stupid as they were, they did provide valuable information, uncle."
The old man looked at his young master and felt like he had matured a lot.
From his foggy eyes, he saw a glimpse of his old master in him.
Edgar didn’t stand at the entrance any longer. He walked inside his barely standing house and sat down on the bed.
Taking out the Nightmare Stone from his pocket, Edgar began to play with it while thinking about his next course of action.
He didn’t plan to visit Soragon Bazaar anytime soon. As a Builder himself, he was more than capable of fixing the fortress.
All he needed for that were Nightmare Stones.
’And I need a lot of them.’
Edgar could rely on the [Beast Trap], but the problem was that it could only be used one at a time.
’I can make it reusable by tying a rope with it, but then I would have to stay awake and even risk my life.’ 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
Edgar began to think of other plans that could earn him Nightmare Stones in the short term.
He thought about selling the [Beast Trap], but it wasn’t enough. Then Edgar thought about selling the ’Unbroken Fire’ itself.
The building blueprint of ’Unbroken Fire’ was general knowledge to the public that had leaked.
Making one was relatively easy. The main ingredients were "20 Nightmare Stones, a bunch of hair from a ’Humanoid Nightmare’, a heart of a Gold Nightmare," and so on... a total of nine items.
But because of the Eternal Night System, Edgar knew how to make one with only two ingredients, which was unknown to everyone.
It was because many of those ingredients were just used to cancel each other out and didn’t provide any actual help.
This only became possible because of the trial-and-error method.
Using his innate strength, Edgar could definitely mass produce the ’Unbroken Fire’.
The market value of an ’Unbroken Fire’ was 65 Nightmare Stones.
The cost of making one for everyone else was 50 Nightmare Stones, but for Edgar it was only 5 Stones!!
But Edgar quickly found many flaws in his plan, mainly the disturbance in the market he would bring.
If there was an abundance of ’Unbroken Fire’, it would increase competition and even raise brows from other Builders.
’...I really can’t mass produce it. I am not strong enough to fend off any trouble it will bring.’
For the time being, Edgar decided to focus on his [Beast Trap].
Thinking about it, Edgar decided to check the other items that he could craft right now.
With a single thought, Edgar summoned his system.
