Chapter 1605: Corpse Governor (2)

The Midnight Duke was stumped by the Corpse Governor’s casual yet cold reply instead of flaring up. But when he thought about the Undead Race’s ruthless nature, it also made sense.

However, he still didn’t get anything and concluded that the Corpse Governor was still oblivious to Nomad’s intrusion in the Undead Boundary, and he couldn’t think of another way to get that accurate information because of the limitation imposed on him.

"I will gladly pass on your words to the Dread Duchess." The Midnight Duke nodded, showing no emotion, "Since we are both busy, let’s chat another time."

"Of course, I’ll be happy to have a chat with a friend from the Evernight Council." The Corpse Governor amicably nodded before the mirror in front of him went dormant again.

However, in that instant, the Corpse Governor’s demeanor changed as his entire being emitted a terrifying killing intent, and the corpse flame within his eyes contorted into beams.

At this moment, he tapped on his throne again, and the mirror rippled before the projection of an imposing wyvern appeared; it was none other than the overseer of the Great Corpse Carnival, Belfast!

The moment Belfast appeared, he spoke in a respectful tone without any air of authority, "Lord Governor, what instruction do you have for this subordinate?"

"Dear Belfast, is there any anomaly with the Carnival?" The Corpse Governor emotionlessly spoke, completely different from the way he spoke with the Midnight Duke.

Belfast’s draconic eyes flickered with a hint of surprise before he quickly replied, "There isn’t any anomaly with the Carnival Lord Governor. Everything is going according to your instructions, and all the Corpse Elites are taking their posts as we speak.

"According to your instructions, I’ve ordered them not move until the Evernight Trial begins, but if someone is able to find them, they are free to deal with them without any qualms."

The Corpse Governor remained silent for a moment before he asked again, "Are you absolutely certain that there isn’t any anomaly? Think again, has there been any incident or movement out of the norm?"

Belfast was startled as he couldn’t understand why the Corpse Governor was behaving like this, but he knew there must be a solid reason behind the latter’s insistence.

But he couldn’t think of anything that was out of the norm except for one thing, and that matter shouldn’t be that of a big deal to warrant the Corpse Governor’s attention.

Nonetheless, Belfast didn’t dare to hide it, as there was nothing worthy to keep a secret from the Corpse Governor.

"There was just one small incident that I could think of. An Elite Squad Member of the Ninth Bone Legion suddenly returned alone after being dispatched for the Carnival.

"After my interrogation, he told me that it was the Ninth Bone Corpse Commander who summoned him back to take care of an important matter. As for what that matter was, he didn’t tell me because he didn’t want to offend his superior, and instead, he was willing to be punished.

"That’s why I gave him a warning and let him leave. But I’ll contact the Ninth Bone Corpse Commander and reprimand him on your lordship’s behalf once the Carnival is over."

The Corpse Governor’s eyes flickered with a hint of disappointment because he wasn’t asking about any matter related to the Undead Boundary but the Upper Ancient Battlefield.

After all, the Undead Boundary was unbreachable in the hearts of every Corpse Clan member, which also goes for the Corpse Governor.

That’s why the matter related to ’Varcor’ holds little importance to the Corpse Governor; instead, with how the Midnight Duke was trying to provoke him, he thought it had something to do with the Evernight Trial, and maybe the Evernight Council was planning something.

But now that Belfast had noticed no anomaly, the Corpse Governor became slightly confused as he wondered if the Midnight Duke was really just trying to provoke him and goad him out of the Undead Boundary.

"Alright, you can deal with this matter as you see fit." The Corpse Governor dismissively replied before his tone turned stern, "Right now, I want you to alert all the Corpse Commanders to start personally instructing their respective Bone Legions, and secretly have one of their ’Corpse Puppets’ leave the Undead Boundary and hide in a different location of the Upper Ancient Battlefield.

"Make sure they won’t alert anyone, or things will turn chaotic, and just in case the Evernight Council plays any tricks, they are free to take action, and have all the Elites retreat within the Undead Boundary."

Belfast was startled by the Corpse Governor’s new command and even wanted to ask what exactly was going on, but he knew the Corpse Governor’s secretive nature and didn’t like being asked useless questions.

In the end, he respectfully affirmed, "As per your order, Lord Governor! I’ll contact every Corpse Commander immediately!"

The Corpse Governor didn’t waste more time with Belfast and ended the conversation as eerie silence returned to the mystical cavern, but his bony fingers continued to tap on the arm of his throne in a rhythm like a dirge.

He has been in charge of the Corpse Clan for many years now, and he has seen many of his comrades die, especially his cherished companion. He knows the waters in the Evernight Council run deep, and there was no way to contest against them.

But as long as the Undead Boundary remains, the Evernight Council will never be able to get rid of them, and it’ll be the biggest thorn in the Evernight Council’s flawless conquest record, like a bloody stain that can’t be washed off.

Just this was enough to satisfy the Corpse Governor, as he’ll continue to keep the Corpse Clan alive and flourishing to vex and gross out the Evernight Council for eternity!

Moreover, the Corpse Governor believed that the Evernight Council would not last forever, as even the top powers have their dawn, and the Council will also have its ending. All he needed to do was wait for that, and with the lifespan of the Undead Clan, they have the capital to wait.

Nonetheless, the Midnight Duke’s strange pattern before had triggered a flicker of unease within the Corpse Governor’s icy Undead Soul, and a hint of unease loomed over his mind!
