Chapter 379: Duel Provocation

He closed the system with a blink of his eyes. His power had increased again in recent months. This satisfied him. Suddenly, the door knocked twice.
"You may enter," Klein replied.
The faction leaders entered one by one. Once inside, the heat from a central brazier made the atmosphere more bearable. Maps were spread out on a large wooden table. Klein sat down first at the end of the table, legs crossed.
"Sit down," he said simply.
Once everyone was seated, he began the briefing in a calm and direct voice.
"Spectrum has several bases in the Tenebris region. We do not yet know the exact location of its main headquarters. Our real target is Pandora herself. To find her, we will divide our forces. Several people of high power level will go attack these bases. The objective is to gather precise information on Pandoraโs true lair. Once we have this data, we will launch the final assault."
The leaders listened attentively. Klein continued by pointing to the positions on the map.
"Each group will be composed of members chosen for their strength and discretion. We cannot afford to fail. Demonic possessions are increasing everywhere and the Holy Cathedral needs quick results. Any questions?"
Several leaders asked questions about the numbers and areas to cover. Klein answered with precision, without wasting time. The meeting lasted about twenty minutes. At the end, he asked everyone to prepare their respective teams.
The meeting was in full swing when Lysandra suddenly stood up from her chair. The wood creaked under the effect of her abrupt movement, and all eyes turned to her. She stared at Klein with a hard, almost contemptuous look.
"You are quite young to lead an operation of this importance," she declared in a voice that echoed against the office walls. "Are you really powerful enough? The leader of this crusade should be at the level of all the faction leaders gathered here. Therefore, I request a duel to verify if you deserve this position."
A stunned silence fell over the room. The faction leaders froze in their seats. Then the gazes turned successively to Lysandra, then to Klein. Confused murmurs rose immediately.
"Is she crazy?"
"Does she not know the rumors about his power?"
"Klein Konstantin has already proven his worth many times. Why demand a duel now?"
Lysandra crossed her arms, a confident smile on her lips. She swept her gaze across the room, as if to challenge anyone who dared to intervene.
"Rumors remain rumors as long as they are not verified," she said with assurance. "I will not follow a kid without having seen with my own eyes what he is worth."
"Lysandra, you should not underestimate him," Sierra intervened.
Lysandra did not even deign to answer her. She was still staring at Klein, waiting for his reaction.
Against all expectations, Klein stood up slowly. He crushed his cigarette in a glass ashtray placed on the table. The ember went out with a slight hiss. He raised his head and replied in a nonchalant, almost weary voice:
"I accept your duel. Letโs go now."
A collective gasp ran through the assembly. No one had really believed he would accept so easily. Lysandra, for her part, displayed an arrogant smile. She was visibly satisfied: she had gotten what she wanted.
Klein left the office first. He crossed the stone-paved corridor without hurrying, his boots echoing on the floor. Behind him, Lysandra followed with a brisk step. The other leaders followed, curious and tense. Whispers ran through the small group.
When they arrived on site, in a cleared area, Klein turned to face Lysandra, but he kept his hands in the pockets of his long coat. His gaze remained cold and detached, as if he were attending a simple unimportant formality. He took no particular combat stance: his shoulders were relaxed, his breathing calm.
Lysandra sensed a slight contempt in this relaxed attitude. Her face tensed, fists clenched. The knuckles of her fingers whitened under the effort.
"You should at least take your hands out of your pockets," she mocked, her voice loaded with challenge.
Klein shrugged slightly. "Start whenever you want."
