Chapter 187: Report

She gestured for Aldric, who’d been observing from the sidelines with an increasingly impressed expression.

"Assessment?" Aldric asked formally.

"Gold-rank classification, no reservations," Warden stated firmly. "He demonstrated Mid-Sequence technique mastery, tactical adaptability, and combat experience that exceeds typical applicants. The Nephilim heritage is irrelevant—his capabilities speak for themselves."

She turned to Rey with respect that hadn’t been present at the match’s beginning.

"You fought well, Eru. Your techniques show self-taught efficiency rather than Academy refinement, which actually makes your achievements more impressive. Most practitioners with formal training can’t execute Mid-Sequences as cleanly as you just did."

Rey inclined his head gratefully while internally celebrating his successful performance.

"Thank you, Proctor Warden. I’m honored by your assessment."

Aldric made notations on his evaluation form.

"Final scoring: Written assessment eighty-seven percent, soul verification passed with no deception detected, Ether Core evaluation shows Gold-tier capacity, combat assessment confirms Mid-Sequence capability and tactical competence."

He looked up with a professional smile.

"Congratulations, Eru. You’re approved for Gold-rank membership in the Silverlight Guild. Please proceed to Administration Hall Three for final registration and equipment assignment."

Rey—still maintaining his Eru persona—followed Aldric’s directions to the administration building, his mind already planning next steps for exploiting his new position.

Gold-rank membership would provide access to higher-tier missions, better resources, and information networks that Bronze and Silver-rank Searchers couldn’t access. It was the perfect foundation for long-term integration into Aether society.

’The performance was successful,’ Rey assessed with cold satisfaction. ’I demonstrated enough capability to justify Gold-rank without revealing anything that would trigger deeper investigation. The Nephilim angle actually worked in my favor—they interpreted my skills as divine blessing rather than questioning their origin.’

He collected his official documentation, equipment allowances, and Guild identification that would legitimize his presence throughout Aether territories.

Meanwhile, in Conference Room Three...

Kaela and Jaren maintained an official expression as they were providing their debriefing to Guild Master Theron.

He was a stern man in his fifties whose appearance suggested both administrative competence and significant personal combat capability.

"Twelve members entered the Dungeon of Malice for standard resource expedition," Kaela reported, her voice steady despite the emotional weight of describing her teammates’ deaths. "Initial exploration proceeded normally for the first three days. We encountered expected corrupt entities, recovered minor artifacts, everything matched historical patterns."

"Then something changed," Jaren continued. "On the fourth day, we encountered corrupt entities that demonstrated coordination we’d never seen before. They weren’t just reacting to our presence—they were hunting us."

Theron’s expression sharpened.

"Coordinated hunting behavior? That’s unusual for Malice-class dungeons. The corruption there typically produces mindless aggression, not tactical awareness."

"Exactly," Kaela agreed. "These entities worked together. They separated our formation, targeted our strongest members first, and drove us into progressively more dangerous territories. It felt... deliberate."

"Marcus tried to fight back," Jaren said quietly. "Used Flame Lance against one of them. The entity absorbed the technique completely, then killed him with a single strike that shattered his sword and tore through his chest."

Theron made careful notes. "Entity capable of absorbing Spirit Art and demonstrating strength sufficient to kill experienced Searchers with one attack. Did you identify its classification?"

"Approximately Tier 7 based on mystical pressure," Kaela replied. "But its coordination suggested higher classification. We encountered multiple entities with similar characteristics."

"How many survived the initial assault?" Theron asked.

"Three of us made it to a dead-end chamber," Kaela answered. "Jaren was critically wounded, I was nearly depleted, and we were cornered by approximately ten entities. We thought we were going to die."

"Then Eru appeared," Jaren added, his voice carrying gratitude. "A Nephilim Searcher, about twenty years old. He executed Mid-Sequence techniques like they were casual exercises. Destroyed all ten entities in under a minute, then cleared the surrounding passages of twelve more."

Theron’s eyebrows rose.

"Mid-Sequence execution at that age? And he was operating solo in the dungeon?"

"He said he works independently," Kaela explained. "Border region background, natural Spirit Art talent. He saved our lives without hesitation, healed Jaren’s wounds, and escorted us safely to the surface."

The Guild Master was silent for a moment, processing the information.

"This raises several concerns," he finally stated. "First, the unusual entity behavior suggests something may have changed in the dungeon’s corruption patterns. Second, twelve deaths from a single expedition is a catastrophic loss that requires investigation. Third, a solo Searcher with Mid-Sequence capabilities appearing at exactly the right moment to save survivors seems... convenient."

Kaela bristled slightly.

"Are you suggesting Eru was somehow involved in our team’s deaths? He saved us! If not for him, Jaren and I would be dead too!"

"I’m not suggesting anything," Theron replied calmly. "But my responsibility includes investigating anomalies, and this situation contains multiple anomalies. A thorough investigation serves everyone’s interests—including Eru’s, if he’s truly innocent of wrongdoing."

He made additional notes before looking up at the two survivors.

"You’re both experienced Searchers whose judgment I trust. Your recommendation of Eru for Guild membership will be honored—in fact, I understand he’s completing his examination as we speak. But I’m also ordering a comprehensive investigation into the Dungeon of Malice incident."

"What does that entail?" Jaren asked.

"I’ll send an investigation team to the dungeon to analyze the entity behavior patterns," Theron explained. "We’ll also conduct discreet background verification on Eru—not because I doubt your assessment, but because protocol requires it for any Searcher who demonstrates exceptional capabilities without clear documentation."

He paused, his expression softening slightly.

"You both performed admirably under impossible circumstances. Take three days of recovery leave. When you return, I’ll have mission assignments appropriate to your demonstrated capabilities."

Kaela and Jaren nodded, understanding that the debriefing was concluded.

As they left the conference room, Jaren whispered to Kaela, "Do you think the investigation will find anything wrong with Eru?"

Kaela shook her head firmly.

"No. He saved our lives. The Gods sent him to us—I’m certain of it. Whatever the investigation finds, it’ll only confirm what we already know about his character."

But Jaren couldn’t quite shake the uncertainty that Theron’s questions had planted.

In Administration Hall Three, Rey completed his final registration, his new Guild identification secure in his possession.

Gold-rank Searcher Eru, officially recognized member of the Silverlight Guild.

His integration into Aether society was almost complete.

Almost...

’I’m certain some of the higher-ups will see through the convenience of what happened and should start investigating me soon. That’s good. They’ll provide the best defense for me once I get past this phase...’

His grin broadened at that moment.
