Chapter 107: Gem Growth Event

The morning of Saturday, May 23rd, brought a heat that felt more like mid-summer than late spring. The Northcastle training grounds were buzzing with the sound of a team that had found its rhythm.

Eric Maddox stood on the touchline, his hands tucked into his pockets, watching his players go through a high-intensity possession drill.

The air was thick with the scent of freshly watered grass and the sharp, rhythmic sound of boots meeting the ball. In the center of the pitch, the players were divided into two groups, moving in a tight circle, trying to keep the ball away from two defenders in the middle.

Suddenly, a familiar translucent blue window flickered into Maddox’s vision. The Pro Manager System was running its background analysis, and a new alert began to pulse with a golden glow.

Maddox’s eyes narrowed as he watched Noah Perring. The young midfielder was moving with a grace that made the other players look like they were working twice as hard for half the result. Every touch Noah took was purposeful. He wasn’t just passing the ball; he was manipulating the space around him.

"Teddy," Maddox called out, not taking his eyes off the pitch.

Teddy Johnson jogged over, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. "Yeah, Eric? What’s up?"

"Look at Noah," Maddox said, gesturing toward the circle. "He’s seeing things before they happen. That last pass to Navarro wasn’t as simple as it was; he put it exactly where Luis could turn into space, even though Luis hadn’t moved yet."

Teddy watched for a moment. "He’s settled in faster than I expected. The boy has a football brain that belongs in the senior team."

"He’s wasted as a standard central midfielder," Maddox said. "He needs to be the heartbeat. I’m shifting the shape of the team."

Teddy looked surprised. "A mid-session tactical change? We’ve been drilling the 4-3-3 for weeks."

"The 4-3-3 is solid, but it’s too rigid for what Noah can do now," Maddox explained. "We’re going to a 4-2-3-1. I want a double pivot of Quinlan and Fournier to provide the steel, and I’m putting Noah in the hole as a true Number Ten. I want him behind Navarro, with Suleiman and Whittaker on the flanks."

Fweeeee!

Maddox blew his whistle, a sharp, commanding blast that brought the session to a halt. The players stopped, some bending over to catch their breath, others looking toward the touchline with curiosity.

"Gather round!" Maddox barked.

The squad jogged over, forming a semi-circle. Maddox grabbed a portable tactical board from the side and began moving the magnetic markers with quick, decisive motions.

"Listen up. We’re making an adjustment to our primary formation for the upcoming tournament," Maddox said. "We’re moving to a 4-2-3-1. Harvey, Émile, you’re the two holding midfielders. Your job is to win the ball and give it to the man in front of you. Ethan, Declan, you’re staying wide to stretch their defense."

He looked directly at Noah Perring. "Noah, you’re moving into the attacking midfield role. You are the conductor. Everything goes through you. If you see a gap, take it. If you see Luis making a run, find him. You have the freedom to roam between their lines."

Noah’s eyes brightened. A small, confident smile played on his lips. "Understood, Boss. I’ll find the pockets."

"Right. Let’s see it in action," Maddox said. "Blue bibs, set up in the new shape. Red bibs, you’re the opposition. Full pitch, fifteen minutes of tactical play. Go!"

The change was almost immediate. As the scrimmage began, the team seemed to click into a higher gear. With Quinlan and Fournier sitting deeper, the defense felt more protected, which allowed the attacking four to play with a frightening level of freedom.

Noah Perring was the catalyst. He moved like a ghost between the Red Team’s midfield and defense. Every time he received the ball, something happened. He didn’t hold onto it for too long; he used one or two touches to shift the focus of the attack.

In the fifth minute of the scrimmage, Noah picked up the ball near the center circle. Instead of playing the safe pass back to the defense, he turned sharply, leaving Ishaan Bhatt behind. With a delicate flick of his ankle, he sent a through-ball between two defenders that perfectly met the diagonal run of Luis Navarro.

Navarro didn’t even have to break his stride. He collected the ball, rounded the keeper, and slotted it home.

"Did you see that?" Teddy whispered to David Frank. "He didn’t even look at Navarro. He just knew where the space was."

The rest of the players noticed it too. There was a new energy on the pitch. Suleiman and Whittaker were sprinting harder, knowing that if they found an inch of space, Noah would find them.

The "Trident" Maddox had envisioned was finally becoming a reality, with Noah as the handle that directed the blades.

At the end of the fifteen minutes, the Blue Team had scored three goals, all of them involving Noah in the build-up. Maddox blew the whistle to end the session. The players were exhausted but buzzing.

"That’s it for the grass today," Maddox announced. "Warm down, get your shakes, and head to the recovery room. Good shift, everyone."

As the players began to disperse, Teddy walked over to Maddox. The assistant coach looked thoughtful.

"That 4-2-3-1 looks lethal with Perring in the middle," Teddy said. "But we need to test it against someone who isn’t our own second string. We need to see how it holds up when the pressure is real."

Maddox nodded. "I agree. We have fourteen days until Valencia. We need match fitness and tactical stress."

Teddy pulled out a folder with several club logos on the front. "I’ve been doing some scouting. We have a few options for friendlies. We could stay local or look abroad."

"What are the options?" Maddox asked.
