Chapter 114: Foxmere Vs Northcastle VI

The corner was taken short this time. Perring to Bhatt, back to Perring. Perring crossed it into the far post. Stones headed it down for Navarro, but the striker’s shot was blocked again.

The forty-third minute felt like a siege. Northcastle had all ten outfield players in the Foxmere half. The ball moved from left to right, back to the center, then out to the left again.

[> "It’s a wall of blue," <] Michael Harrison observed. [> "Foxmere have all eleven men in their own eighteen-yard box. There is literally no space for Northcastle to work in." <]

[> "They need a bit of magic, Michael," <] Peter Walsh said. [> "A bit of individual brilliance to unlock this." <]

As the clock hit forty-four minutes, the fourth official held up the board. Four minutes of added time.

[> "Four minutes for Northcastle to find a breakthrough before the half," <] Michael Harrison noted. [> "Maddox looks like he’s calculating something." <]

Maddox was indeed calculating. He saw that the Foxmere defenders were all focused on Navarro and the wingers. They were ignoring the late runs from the midfield. He whistled loudly, catching Harvey Quinlan’s attention. He made a forward motion with his hand.

Quinlan understood.

In the first minute of added time, Perring had the ball near the right corner of the box. He danced around a challenge and looked like he was going to cross. Instead, he played a square pass to the edge of the area.

Quinlan arrived late, running from deep. He didn’t stop to control it. He hit it first time with his laces.

The ball was a rocket. It stayed low, skimming the grass, and flew through a forest of legs. The keeper never saw it until it was past him.

It smashed against the post and stayed out.

[> "POST!" <] Peter Walsh yelled. [> "Quinlan nearly tore the net off! The woodwork saves Foxmere again!" <]

The rebound fell to a Foxmere player who tried to clear it, but he was so tired he only managed to slice it high into the air.

The ball came down near the penalty spot. Miller and Navarro both went for it. They collided, both falling to the ground. The ball bounced loose.

In the second minute of added time, Noah Perring reacted. He was the first to the ball. He didn’t shoot immediately. He saw the keeper was out of position, trying to anticipate a power shot.

Perring performed a delicate chip. The ball rose over the keeper’s head and the three defenders on the line.

It seemed to hang in the air forever. The stadium went silent.

The ball dropped. It hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down, crossing the line before spinning back out.

The referee looked at his linesman. The linesman was running back toward the halfway line.

Fweeeee!

[> "GOAL!" <] Michael Harrison screamed. [> "GOAL FOR NORTHCASTLE! NOAH PERRING!" <]

[> "He’s done it!" <] Peter Walsh shouted. [> "The chip! The finesse! In the middle of all that mud and chaos, he finds the touch of a surgeon. Brilliant!" <]

The Northcastle players erupted. Navarro grabbed Perring in a bear hug, lifting him off the ground. Whittaker and Suleiman piled on. Even Jack Stones ran up from the back to join the celebration.

Maddox didn’t jump or scream. He simply nodded, a small smile appearing on his face. He checked his system.

[EVENT: Breakthrough Achieved]

[Noah Perring: Goal (45+2’)]

[Team Morale: +20%]

[Opponent Composure: -40%]

"That’s the one," Maddox whispered.

The game restarted, but Foxmere was broken. They tried to keep the ball for the remaining two minutes of added time, but they were making simple mistakes.

In the final minute of the half, Northcastle almost made it two. Perring found Whittaker with another line-breaking pass. Whittaker crossed it for Navarro, whose header was tipped over the bar by the keeper.

The resulting corner was played safe, Northcastle keeping possession to kill the clock.

Fweeee! Fweeeee!

The referee blew for half-time.

[> "And that’s the half," <] Michael Harrison announced. [> "A dominant, relentless performance from Northcastle Rising Stars. It took forty-seven minutes, but they finally found the breakthrough through the magic of Noah Perring." <]

[> "It’s 1-0, but it feels like much more," <] Peter Walsh added. [> "Foxmere fought hard, but you could see the dam was breaking. Once that first goal goes in, the tactical plan for the underdog usually falls apart. Maddox will be very happy with that." <]

Maddox turned and walked toward the locker room. As he passed the Foxmere dugout, he saw Miller sitting on the grass, his head in his hands, covered in mud. The Foxmere captain looked exhausted.

Maddox entered the locker room. The players were buzzing, the adrenaline still high.

"Sit down," Maddox said, his voice calm but firm.

The room went quiet. The players took their seats, grabbing water bottles and towels.

"Good goal, Noah," Maddox said, nodding to the midfielder. "But that’s only one. We spent forty-five minutes creating twenty chances. I want more clinical finishing in the second half." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

He looked at the group. "They are tired. You can see it in their eyes. They can’t keep up with your movement. In the second half, I want us to move the ball even faster. One touch. Don’t give them a chance to foul you."

Maddox walked to the tactical board. "They’re going to have to come out now. They can’t just sit in the box if they want to get back into the game. When they push up, that’s when we kill them. Ethan, Declan, stay high. Wait for the transition."

He looked at Luis Navarro. "Luis, you’re winning the battles. Now win the goal. I want you on the scoresheet in the first ten minutes of the half."

Navarro nodded, his eyes determined. "I’ll get it, Boss."

Maddox checked his watch. "Ten minutes. Rest. Hydrate. We go out and finish this."

As the players rested, Maddox pulled Teddy aside.

"The 4-2-3-1 is perfect here," Maddox whispered. "But watch the fatigue on Marcelo. He’s been running that wing non-stop. I might bring on a sub at the sixty-minute mark."

"Agreed," Teddy said. "And what about the midfield? Do we keep the double pivot?"

"For now, yes," Maddox replied. "It gives Noah the freedom to stay high. If we go to 2-0, we can think about resting Quinlan."

The locker room door opened, and the referee signaled for the teams to return.

Maddox stood by the door, patting each player on the shoulder as they walked out.

"Finish it," he told them.

The players walked back out onto the muddy pitch. The sun was starting to dip lower, casting long, dramatic shadows across the ground. The Foxmere fans were still there, but their voices were less confident now. They knew the "pretty boys" had teeth.

[> "The teams are back out for the second half," <] Michael Harrison said. [> "Northcastle lead 1-0. Can Foxmere find a way back, or will the Rising Stars run away with it?" <]

[> "It’s going to be a long forty-five minutes for Foxmere," <] Peter Walsh predicted. [> "Maddox has his team smelling blood." <]

The referee blew the whistle to start the second half. Luis Navarro touched the ball to Perring, and the siege began again.
