Football System: Touchline God
Chapter 80: Second Half Begins I
The players took their positions. Luis Navarro jogged to the center circle, testing his ankle one last time with a quick sprint. He looked comfortable, his movement fluid.
[> "Navarro seems to have shaken off that knock from the first half," <] Peter Walsh observed. [> "He’ll be the key for Northcastle. If he can find space, Hastings will be in trouble." <]
The ball was placed on the center spot. The referee checked with his linesmen, then looked at his watch. He raised the whistle to his lips.
The crowd rose to its feet, the anticipation reaching a fever pitch. Eric Maddox stood on the edge of his technical area, his arms crossed, his mind already three moves ahead. He could see the System’s tactical overlay shifting, showing the Hastings defenders leaning back, ready to retreat.
Fweeee!
The whistle blew and the second half was underway.
The ball rolled to Connor Davis. The Hastings midfielder was calm in the center circle, his posture relaxed as he surveyed the pitch. He looked like a man who knew he had the advantage, and in this parallel world where football was everything, that confidence was a weapon. He didn’t rush the play. He waited for the Northcastle players to commit, watching their frantic energy with a cold, detached eye.
[> "And we’re back underway," <] Michael Harrison announced, his voice booming through the stadium speakers. [> "Hastings Coastal Academy with the kickoff, leading 2-1 here in the Coastal Arena. The question is, can Northcastle find a way back, or will the home side finish them off?" <]
Davis touched the ball back to Ben Williams. The veteran midfielder was already looking for options. He didn’t need to be told what to do; he had played in hundreds of these matches. He kept the ball moving, a simple horizontal pass that forced the Northcastle front line to shift their weight.
The crowd was loud. Seven thousand voices created a wall of sound that seemed to vibrate the very grass on the pitch. The Hastings fans were singing, a rhythmic, driving chant that celebrated their lead and mocked the struggling visitors.
[> "What an atmosphere," <] Peter Walsh observed from the commentary gantry. [> "The Coastal Arena is rocking. Every touch by a Hastings player is cheered like a goal, and every Northcastle movement is met with a chorus of boos." <]
Williams played a safe pass to Jake Thompson. The midfielder controlled it well with the inside of his boot, his head up and scanning. He saw the Northcastle press starting to form, but it was disjointed. The anger from the first half was still clouding their coordination.
Thompson looked up and saw Dylan Foster making a run down the right wing. The pass was simple but effective, a curved ball that bypassed the first line of the Northcastle midfield and landed perfectly in Foster’s path.
[> "Hastings starting slowly," <] Michael Harrison noted. [> "They want to keep possession early. It’s a smart move. They don’t need to chase the game; they just need to manage it." <]
Foster had space to work with. Declan Whittaker was tracking back, his lungs burning as he tried to close the gap, but the Hastings full-back had time. He took a touch to settle the ball, then another to look at the box.
The cross came in high and arching. It was aimed at Marcus Price, who was already wrestling for position in the eighteen-yard box.
Will van Drunen was tight behind the striker. The Dutch defender wasn’t giving him any room to breathe. He had his hand on Price’s lower back, just enough to feel his movement without alerting the referee. His eyes were locked on the flight of the ball.
[> "Price in the 18-yard box," <] Peter Walsh said. [> "Van Drunen marking him closely after that penalty incident. There’s no love lost between these two right now." <]
The ball began its descent. Price tried to leap, but van Drunen used his superior height and strength to lean into the striker, spoiling his jump. The ball was headed clear by Jack Stones. The captain’s timing was perfect, his forehead meeting the leather with a thud that could be heard over the noise of the crowd.
It dropped to Émile Fournier twenty yards out. The French midfielder controlled it on his chest, the ball sticking to him as if he had magnets in his jersey. He didn’t panic under the immediate pressure from a Hastings winger.
[> "Jack Stones with the clearance," <] Michael Harrison observed. [> "Rising Stars looking to start their comeback. They need to turn defense into attack in a heartbeat." <]
Fournier turned and played the ball to Harvey Quinlan. The midfielder was already moving forward, his body low as he accelerated into the empty space in the center of the pitch.
[> "This is what Maddox wanted," <] Peter Walsh noted. [> "Quick transitions. Direct football. He told them in the dressing room to stop overplaying, and they seem to be listening." <]
Quinlan drove forward with the ball at his feet. Ben Williams was tracking back, trying to slow him down, but Quinlan’s first few steps were explosive. He bypassed the first challenge with a quick shimmy.
The next pass came left to Declan Whittaker. The winger had beaten Dylan Foster to the ball, using his raw pace to exploit the space the full-back had left behind when he pushed forward.
[> "Whittaker down the left," <] Michael Harrison said, the excitement rising in his voice. [> "He’s got pace to burn, and Foster is struggling to get back into position." <]
Whittaker took on Foster again. The right-back was struggling to match his acceleration. Whittaker knocked the ball ten yards ahead and simply outran him, his boots kicking up bits of turf as he sprinted toward the corner flag.
The cross came in low and hard, a "zip" cross that cut across the face of the goal. Luis Navarro was making his run into the eighteen-yard box, his eyes fixed on the near post.
Tom Bradley read it well. The Hastings captain stepped in front of the striker, his slide perfectly timed to intercept the ball before it could reach Navarro’s outstretched foot. He cleared it with a desperate hook of his leg.
[> "Bradley with the interception," <] Peter Walsh observed. [> "Solid defending from the Hastings captain. He knew exactly where that ball was going." <]
The ball bounced to Connor Davis. The midfielder was already looking to switch play, his vision allowing him to see the entire field while others were focused on the immediate scrap for the ball.
Davis found Nathan Price on the right wing with a well-struck long ball. The younger Price brother controlled it well with his laces, bringing the ball down out of the air in one fluid motion.
[> "Nathan Price with space," <] Michael Harrison noted. [> "Hastings looking to counter. They’ve caught Northcastle with too many men forward." <]
Nathan drove at Marcelo. The Brazilian left-back was already backpedaling, his hips turned to prevent the winger from beating him on the outside. But Nathan had other ideas.
The winger cut inside, away from the touchline, drifting toward the "D" at the edge of the area. His left foot was ready, cocked like a loaded spring.
The shot came from twenty-five yards. It was a screaming effort, rising toward the top corner of the net.
Freddie Booth was already moving. The young keeper, who Eric had defended so fiercely, showed why he was in the starting lineup. He launched himself into the air, his body fully extended. He pushed the ball over the bar with a strong right hand.
[> "SAVED!" <] Peter Walsh screamed. [> "Booth with a brilliant stop! That was heading for the top bin!" <]
The home crowd groaned in unison. It was a collective sound of frustration that echoed around the stadium. That was close to killing the game.
[> "Nathan Price nearly put this to bed," <] Michael Harrison observed. [> "What a strike that was. Booth is the only reason Rising Stars are still in this." <]
