From Evil Sect Leader to Doctor
Chapter 572 - 543: Fainting
Pei Yu laughed, "You’re really different. Others get nervous before the wedding, but you’re nervous on the wedding day."
Pei Lin said, "I’ve looked forward to many things, but when it comes time to actually do them, they don’t seem that interesting."
Pei Yu held her shoulder and looked at Pei Lin in the mirror, "You don’t realize how lucky you are, and you have no idea how many people envy you."
The phone on the dressing table rang. Pei Lin thought the wedding procession was finally arriving, but it was an unknown caller. Many unknown calls had come these past few days. Some middle managers from Huanyan Health had heard the news from somewhere and offered their blessings, some even went out of their way to send red envelopes.
Pei Lin’s attitude towards this was different from Zhao Feiyang’s. She wasn’t from the system, so since others sincerely wanted to give, she accepted politely. Many people, after hitting a wall with Zhao Feiyang, turned to send their blessings to the dean’s wife.
To some, the couple seemed to work well together—one maintaining reputation, the other gaining benefits. But others believed they were just putting on a show, a poorly acted one at that, just deceiving themselves.
Pei Lin answered the call; it was a man on the phone.
"Is this Ms. Pei Lin?"
"Yes, it’s me!"
"I’m Officer Li Guangzhong, the detective from the Dongzhou Public Security Bureau responsible for the Yang Mufeng case."
Pei Lin’s heart sank instantly. "Officer Li, is there something I can help you with?"
"Yes, we have a few questions we’d like your cooperation with. Can you come by when you have a moment?"
"It’s not convenient!" Pei Lin refused decisively.
"Or perhaps we could visit you."
Pei Lin gripped the phone tightly, using it as support to prevent it from dropping, worried her hands might tremble.
"I’m sorry, I’m getting married today. Could we reschedule?"
The caller hesitated for a moment, "Oh, I see. Well, tomorrow then—would you be able to come by tomorrow?"
Pei Lin agreed, feeling even more distressed. Although she knew the police would eventually contact her, she hadn’t expected it to be at this time. She wasn’t sure if there had been a mistake. However, the police didn’t seem to have concrete evidence; otherwise, they wouldn’t have approached her by phone.
Pei Lin comforted herself, thinking maybe it was just a routine inquiry. She’d already gotten past so many hurdles, she was sure she could get through this one as well.
Seeing the pallor on her face, Pei Yu was a bit alarmed, reminding her to use more blush.
By then, the wedding procession had arrived. The convoy wasn’t extravagant, only three Maybachs, as Pei Lin had insisted. He had originally planned to come alone in their newly bought Cayenne to pick her up.
Zhao Feiyang wore the suit Pei Lin had bought him in Nanjiang. Xu Chunliang found it familiar, as he had personally tried it on. It fit Zhao Feiyang reasonably well, although he curiously wore a red tie today, seemingly to suit the occasion but looking a bit out of place.
Xu Chunliang understood he was there as a support and shouldn’t steal the spotlight, so he wore sportswear. Yet, even so, his aura was no less compelling than Zhao Feiyang’s. A man’s charm never lies in his attire.
Zhao Feiyang had a formulaic smile on his face, and even Xu Chunliang, an outsider, could see it wasn’t sincere. The wedding procedures were simple, and the bridesmaids didn’t make it difficult for them. Once they received the red envelopes, they happily opened the door.
Pei Lin, having lost both parents and with few relatives, had only her close friends helping today. Her cousin Pei Yu was in charge of the proceedings. They set up a traditional little game for the groom to find the bridal shoes, nothing challenging. Pei Lin had specifically instructed not to trouble Zhao Feiyang, knowing his patience for her was waning with time.
Having been married once before, Zhao Feiyang was very experienced and quickly found the bridal shoes under the nightstand.
The bridesmaids all exclaimed it wasn’t fun. One chubby bridesmaid chimed in, "The groom is quite experienced!"
The room fell silent instantly, yet Xu Chunliang quickly defused the tension, laughing, "Proving Dean Zhao diligently surveyed the scene multiple times, knowing everything inside out."
Everyone laughed together.
Zhao Feiyang laughed, "Don’t tease me, kid." He knelt on one knee, presented the bouquet, and smiled at Pei Lin, "Will you marry me?"
In fact, Zhao Feiyang had already proposed, and this was just a formality. Pei Lin asked herself inwardly, sadly realizing she had lost all illusions and expectations for her marriage. Perhaps it was the phone call earlier that had seriously affected her mood.
Pei Lin nodded, lowered her head to smell the bouquet, mainly to prevent others from seeing her expression at the moment, as Zhao Feiyang took out the diamond ring to put it on her finger.
Pei Lin forced a faint smile, and everyone cheered together.
Zhao Feiyang began putting the shoes on her. In this regard, Zhao Feiyang wasn’t skilled and failed to put them on twice, just as he applied a bit more force, Pei Lin suddenly fainted.
Everyone was stunned, and Zhao Feiyang was also bewildered. How did she faint with such little force? Was she pretending?
Zhao Feiyang called out Pei Lin’s name, but she didn’t respond.
Pei Yu also thought she was joking and reached out to shake her, but when Pei Lin didn’t wake up, they realized she really had fainted. Pei Yu said, "Xiaolin, Xiaolin, something’s wrong, she’s passed out, quickly take her to the hospital..." After saying this, she immediately realized how inappropriate it was. It was their wedding day, Zhao Feiyang was there to pick up the bride, and who has ever heard of taking a bride to the hospital during the wedding?
Pei Lin fainted very suddenly. She was now unconscious, her face pale, forehead covered in fine sweat, and hands and feet cold. In traditional Chinese medicine, this condition is uniformly referred to as syncope.
Usually, syncope lasts for a short time, and there are no aftereffects after waking up, but if the condition is severe and the syncope lasts too long, there’s a risk of not waking up or even death.
The principle for treating syncope is: Revive and clear the orifices, for solid conditions apply acupuncture without moxibustion and use reduction methods; for deficient conditions use both acupuncture and moxibustion, with more moxibustion, choosing the reinforcement method.
Zhao Feiyang also had a medical background, though his clinical experience was limited and his medical skills fairly basic. He understood basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and was preparing to perform CPR on Pei Lin.
Xu Chunliang shouted, "Let me do it!"
Zhao Feiyang hesitated for a moment, wondering what he was up to. This was his wife; whether it was chest compressions or mouth-to-mouth, it involved sensitive areas. It wasn’t as if he didn’t know how—this was about saving someone, not a wedding prank. Besides, even for pranks, you don’t press on chests or kiss.
Zhao Feiyang was overthinking a bit.
Xu Chunliang didn’t bother to explain, and came to the bedside, pressing Pei Lin’s Ren Zhong acupoint with increased pressure using his thumb.
The Ren Zhong acupoint: Also known as Ghost Palace or Ghost Market. It’s part of the Du Channel, located on the face, at the junction of the upper 1/3 and middle 1/3 of the philtrum. It connects to the orbicularis oris muscle; blood vessels include the superior labial artery and vein; nerves include the infraorbital nerve branch and facial nerve buccal branch.
Pressing this point can treat coma, syncope, sunstroke, mania, epilepsy, acute and chronic convulsions, nasal congestion, nosebleed, facial swelling, toothache, lockjaw, jaundice, thirst, cholera, pestilence, spasms, and kidney pain.
This acupoint has the effect of clearing heat, opening the orifices, and rescuing consciousness, which is the principle behind pressing the philtrum for heatstroke.
Seeing him act, Zhao Feiyang realized he had overthought. Xu Chunliang wasn’t trying to compete for CPR. Although he lacked a medical license, he was the legitimate heir of Huichun Hall and likely had some grasp of medical skills.
After pressing the Ren Zhong, Xu Chunliang then selected Pei Lin’s He Gu acupoint.
The He Gu acupoint, also known as the tiger mouth. It belongs to the Large Intestine Meridian of Hand Yangming, located on the back of the hand, between the first and second metacarpal bones, at the midpoint on the radial side of the second metacarpal bone. Surrounding nerves include the superficial branch of the radial nerve, with deeper branches of the median nerve, dorsal venous network of the hand, and proximally, the radial artery passes from the back of the hand to the palm.
Anyone with some medical knowledge knows that for syncope, the philtrum and tiger mouth are the first choices.
Traditional Chinese medical emergency techniques emphasize accurate point identification and appropriate strength. In Pei Lin’s case, strong pressure was needed, with waking from pain as the standard.
Xu Chunliang pressed hard on Pei Lin’s Ren Zhong with one hand, while gripping her He Gu with the other.
Originally unconscious, Pei Lin’s brow furrowed painfully; the pain from the two major acupoints continuously stimulated her nerves, and Pei Lin, unable to bear the pain, let out a mournful and graceful moan.
The sound was filled with ambiguity, making the bridesmaids nearby feel as if their imaginations were running wild, not to mention how Pei Lin kept moaning nonstop.
"Ow... ah... it hurts... hurts..."
Pei Lin woke up but hadn’t regained full clarity of mind, mumbling drowsily: "Feiyang... be gentle... it hurts... hurts..."
Zhao Feiyang was embarrassed. Why was this woman babbling nonsense? It wasn’t him causing her pain; it was Xu Chunliang. Fortunately, there were so many eyes watching. If someone unaware overheard, they wouldn’t know what to think.
"Ah! Ah! It hurts so much... stop doing this to me..." The rhythmic waves of pain were more than Pei Lin could endure.
All eyes were on Xu Chunliang, knowing that this guy was saving someone. However, Pei Lin had already asked him to stop, and yet Xu Chunliang continued pressing, persistently transferring pain into Pei Lin.
Those in the know understood he was saving her, while those who were not might even suspect he was taking deliberate revenge.
After a series of painful inputs, Pei Lin slowly opened her eyes, tears streaming from the pain: "Feiyang... stop... ah! Why is it you?" It was only now that she was fully conscious and realized it was Xu Chunliang, not Zhao Feiyang, handling her.
The bridesmaids around her nervously wiped away their cold sweat, fearing she might blur out something inappropriate in her disoriented state.
Zhao Feiyang said, "Xiaolin, you just passed out. Xiaoxu is helping you with massage, bear with it a bit."
Seeing she was awake, Xu Chunliang released his hands and asked, "Sister-in-law, how do you feel now?"
