From Wage Slave to Tycoon
Chapter 68: A Rope Breaks at Its Thinnest Point
"Ding! Your CCB savings account ending in 7890 received a deposit of 256,200,000 yuan at 8:00 AM on October 1st. Current balance: 1,158,200,000 yuan!"
Su Chen was sleeping soundly early in the morning when the chime of a text message shattered his peaceful dreams.
He glanced at the text on his phone before casually stuffing it under his pillow.
Originally, Su Chen had over 1.2 billion yuan in his account. After returning from Xiangjiang, he had transferred 300 million to his company as start-up capital for investment projects. This morning, the system deposited nearly 260 million. With all the money coming in and going out, Su Chen’s balance was basically unchanged.
Su Chen also pulled up the system panel, which he hadn’t looked at in a while.
[Host: Su Chen]
[Intermediate God of Wealth: 22,220,000 / 1,000,000,000]
[Wealth: 800 yuan (Automatically withdrawn on the 1st of each month)]
"Hm? What’s this?" Su Chen’s brow furrowed the moment he saw the experience points column.
’What’s going on? This month I bought a watch, a car, and transferred money... it adds up to almost 350 million. Why did the system only give me a little over twenty million in experience?’ 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Su Chen thought for a good while before it dawned on him. Setting aside the 300-plus million he had transferred, it seemed the twenty-something million was what he had actually *spent* this month.
’You’re kidding me. It only counts if I actually spend it??’ Su Chen sighed helplessly.
’Looks like my plans to buy a private jet and a luxury yacht can be moved up the schedule!’
Su Chen didn’t dwell on it. After a brief moment of reflection, he climbed out of bed and headed straight for the bathroom, stark naked.
Before long, the sound of running water and Su Chen’s off-key singing could be heard from the bathroom.
"BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ~"
"BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ~"
Hearing his phone ringing nonstop, Su Chen gave himself a quick wipe-down, wrapped a towel around his waist, and walked out.
"Who is it? Calling so early, don’t they know people need to rest?"
Although Su Chen was grumbling, his hands moved quickly to retrieve the phone from under his pillow.
When he saw the caller ID, Su Chen was rather surprised. He never would have expected a call from his old friend—Yang Wei!
"Brother Wei, what made you think of calling me? Don’t tell me you want to treat me to a meal!"
"Hello? Xiaochen!"
A hoarse, exhausted voice came from the phone. Su Chen could still tell it was Yang Wei.
Su Chen’s heart skipped a beat. He had a bad feeling.
"Brother Wei, what’s wrong? You don’t sound right!"
There were two or three seconds of silence on the other end before Yang Wei’s voice came through.
"Hua-jie and Xiaoyann are both in the hospital. The doctor said it’s uremia caused by polycystic kidney disease. It’s a hereditary condition!"
"What?!" Su Chen was stunned by the news.
The Hua-jie and Xiaoyann that Yang Wei mentioned were his wife and daughter. They all lived with Yang Wei in Shanghai, and Su Chen had met them several times for meals.
Su Chen vaguely remembered that Xiaoyann was only about seventeen or eighteen this year. She was in the prime of her youth—how could she have contracted a disease like uremia?
Thinking about what Brother Wei had just said about it being hereditary, Su Chen couldn’t help but sigh heavily.
It really was just like the old saying: "A rope breaks at its thinnest point, and misfortune seeks out the already miserable."
’Ah, fate... It’s completely out of one’s hands.’
"Xiaochen, I had no other choice but to call you. The doctor said for this disease, it’s either long-term dialysis or a kidney transplant!"
"I went to get tested for a match, but the doctor found that I have some kidney problems myself, so I can’t be a donor."
At this point... Su Chen could clearly feel the despair in Brother Wei’s voice.
"I’ve already arranged to sell the house, but that distant water can’t put out a nearby fire. I just wanted to ask you for a favor..."
Su Chen cut him off. "Brother Wei, just tell me which hospital you’re at. I’ll come find you, and we can talk in person!"
"At Ruijin Hospital!"
"Got it. I’m on my way!"
After hanging up, Su Chen changed his clothes, called for Jiang Hui, and rushed out the door.
Su Chen knew Yang Wei all too well. If he hadn’t been completely out of options, he never would have called to ask for help.
Ruijin Hospital was in the Huangpu District, a bit of a distance from Su Chen’s place. Plus, it was rush hour.
Even rushing, it still took them nearly half an hour to arrive.
When Su Chen found Yang Wei in the nephrology department, he was utterly shocked.
His once-black hair had turned half-white, making him look like a man in his fifties or sixties from a distance.
His face was etched with exhaustion and sorrow, his hair was a mess, and his bloodshot eyes stared blankly at the ceiling, lost in thought.
"Brother Wei~" Su Chen walked to his side and called out softly.
Hearing the voice, Yang Wei turned and saw Su Chen. He forced a pained smile onto his face. "...Xiaochen, you’re here!"
"Where are your wife and Xiaoyann?"
"They’re undergoing dialysis... It’ll probably be another half an hour," he said, his gaze drifting toward a room not far away.
Su Chen got up and walked over. Through the glass on the door, he could see several people lying inside, each with two tubes inserted into their arms.
He scanned the room and quickly spotted Hua-jie and Xiaoyann. Both looked utterly haggard.
"Sigh..." Su Chen let out a long sigh and returned to Yang Wei’s side.
"Brother Wei, why don’t you go wash up first? Then we can talk more about your wife and daughter."
Hearing Su Chen’s words, a glimmer of hope seemed to appear in Yang Wei’s eyes. He nodded and headed toward the washroom.
Three to five minutes later, Yang Wei returned, all washed up.
His hair was neatly combed, and he looked much more presentable than before.
"Brother Wei, what’s their current situation? What did the doctor say?"
"Late-stage uremia. It’s either dialysis or a transplant!"
Yang Wei paused, then continued, "Xiaochen, the reason I called you was to ask for your help. My wife and Xiaoyann are still young, especially Xiaoyann. She still has a bright future ahead of her!"
"The house back home is on a mortgage. Selling it would get me about three or four hundred thousand. With the money from selling the car and our savings, it’s about six hundred thousand in total. That’s almost enough for the transplant!"
"But time is running out. The house won’t sell that quickly. And especially Xiaoyann... the doctor said if we wait any longer, there’ll be no point in getting a transplant. Xiaochen, I know you’re capable. I want to ask you to help me find a suitable kidney donor!"
"I’m begging you!" As he said this, Yang Wei dropped to his knees with a sharp CRACK, his head hitting the floor.
The dull THUD echoed in Su Chen’s ears.
"Brother Wei, get up, get up! I’ll definitely help you with this!" Su Chen and Jiang Hui hurriedly helped Yang Wei to his feet.
Hearing that Su Chen was willing to help, he said through his tears, "Thank you, thank you!"
They say a man doesn’t cry easily, but only when his heart is truly broken.
Su Chen shot Jiang Hui a look, telling him to watch over Yang Wei, then got up to find a quiet place to make a call.
As he walked down the hall, Su Chen noticed for the first time that there were people undergoing dialysis in many of the rooms.
He did a quick mental count... there were at least thirty or forty people, both old and young.
Su Chen even saw a child who looked to be around ten years old.
Su Chen found a quiet spot, pulled out his phone, and called Si Cong directly. What else could he do? The guy had more connections in Shanghai than he did.
He briefly explained the situation. Si Cong was silent for a good while before saying he’d make some calls and see what he could find out.
