Chapter 339: For the Empire
PoV General Victor Dunberry
"I feel like the Supreme Commander from the Beast-kin nation is controlling everything," Neil Desmond said, his face showing serious contemplation. "Like, all the previous negotiations and concessions are just to allow us to feel like we were not steamrolled," He added, and the other strategists and I frowned.
Those words were like cold water on all of us, as we had been discussing for over a week with remarkable progress. It seemed that when the Beast-kin were serious about ending negotiations, things moved quickly. They made decisions faster and quickly compressed on things at a speed that seemed unreal. I could only hold back my curses from being said out loud.
But seriously, Fuck, Duchess Greenwald, the traitorous bitch.
She had left me with this vile silver-haired and tongue-tied bitch, called Chelsea Loveknot, and she was running circles around us. I could only feel a boiling rage toward the woman because her negotiations now told me that everything before had been nothing but us begging for concessions or even attention.
The Supreme Commander of the Elite Army of the Beast-kin nation was someone who was permanently on the spies' watch list. The moment she stepped into the negotiations tent and put down the proposal, months of negotiations went out the window, and she rushed forward like an A-ranker riding the wind. It was insane and, honestly, relieving. The Emperor wants to get this over with and to start healing the Empire. He already talked to me about his plans for the future, and a serious clean-up was going to be done.
But they could not start until the war was over.
Which had been delayed month after month, with no end in sight, till suddenly she proposed it, and now it was charged like it had broken through in power. Now we were struggling to ensure nothing slipped through the cracks in the paperwork. They clearly had been delaying on purpose. It was simple; they had a motive for keeping us at the front, and it was internal issues in the Beast-kin Nation. Although it was nice to know they were having issues back home, it didn't do me any good.
We had issues for ourselves since the Duchess suddenly turned traitor and took everything she valued with her. The Empire was caught completely by surprise by her defection, although in hindsight, the signs were there. Everyone knew that the Emperor was getting ready to severely punish her for the first major failure in the Empire, and even losing territory.
"I know," I finally replied to one of the few strategists that I let stick around after the Duchess turned traitor. The young man had remarkable insight for someone of his age and had a working brain. Luckily, he had recently joined her core strategists and aides, or I would have had to remove him. "The problem is," I took a deep breath and sighed even more deeply, "We need to walk into it with smiles on our faces."
"Forgive me, but can I ask why?" The young stratagist replied, and I looked at the young man.
"Because they did this largely for our benefit, I know we pushed out a couple of extra things that they were not completely happy to give, but," I took another breath, "We lost this war, lost too many forces in the war due to arrogance. We should have-" I cut myself off for a moment and took yet another deep breath. "It does not matter what we should have done; we all talked to each other about that, and we are still going to go over it a thousand more times. It will not stop, but at this point," I looked him dead in the eyes. "It no longer matters; we need this peace more than they do at this point. We can only defend our territory, and we-" I paused, "Need to get to work of our own, which we cannot do with a massive barbarian army on our front door frothing at the mouth to kill us."
"There is one major reason, I am taking this treaty with a smile on my face, though, even if they planned this from the beginning," I added, deciding to let the aides and strategists around me listen to my thoughts, and I could see the intrigued expressions of all those around us, and I wrlyly smiled. "Because they gave us room to look like we did not surrender, which the Emperor explicitly told me we cannot look like we are doing. Although the treaty favors the Beast-kin Nation, it does not favor them to the point that it looks like surrender."
Silence engulfed the tent, and everyone looked down at the papers they had been looking over for the smallest details. They realized just what those papers meant, and I sighed, "I already talked to the Emperor, and if nothing in here you can find is a trap or perilously worded, then we will sign this treaty as soon as possible. We will declare peace with the Beast-kin Nation."
The words sent a wave of astonishment through the room, and they still astonish me. We had signed peace treaties in the past, but always from a position of strength. The Kingdom of Chip understood that, as did the praries, would understand that the most.
With this, I would be signing the first losing peace treaty, and I would have to carry the shame. Damn Duchess Greenwald, it was her humiliation to bear; she turned traitor and defected to the damn beasts. That damn beast, whom I would have to shake hands with, was the one to fuck that damn Duchess traitor. Her fetish for massive dick was well known since the well-endowed men in the past would get a visit here and there from the Duchess. Although it had stopped for a while, I-
I cut off my thoughts because it no longer mattered, or it did matter, but getting angry over it would change nothing.
I was handed that shit pile, and I would have to clean up the mess.
"General, I looked over the documents as did everyone else," One of my aides said, "Although it is pending your final review, we collectively believe we have missed nothing. I believe this treaty is ready to sign."
The words were a punch in the gut, and I closed my eyes, and I no longer knew if I was doing the right thing. "Depart," I told them bluntly, a moment later, letting them all get up and leave the tent, and I looked at the papers around and felt my face heat more and more as they departed.
The moment they left, I could no longer contain myself.
Anger, rage, and shame hit me hard. My emotions boiled over, and I erupted, "FUCKING BEAST FUCKS! THOSE INCOMPETENT FUCKERS LETTING THESE BEAST HUMULIATE THE EMPIRE LIKE THIS! I WILL FLAY THEIR FUCKING INSIDES AND SKIN THEM SLOWLY FUCKING BEAST FUCKS! TRAITOROUS BITCH IS MAKING ME, GENERAL VICTOR DUNBERRY, SIGN THE MOST HUMILIATING TREATY OF THE EMPIRE'S HISTORY! ARGH~~~!!!!" I roared out my fury, my mana making the enchantments on the tent pulse and almost break as I percariously projected it in emotional fury, then I gathered it.
I stopped it and brought it all back, that rage, I would use it later. But for now, I took control of those destructive emotions and took a deep breath.
"For the Empire. It is all for the Empire. We suffer humiliation today, sure. But in the future, no beast will be enslaved," I promised myself, and I smiled. I will make sure to purchase the very first set of beast-kin slaves I can after the inspectors leave the Empire.
They may have humiliated the Empire today, but the Beast-kin Nation was nothing but a bunch of Barbarians with no central authority. We will destroy them in the future, that is for certain.
I grinned, knowing that I would be the one leading the armies against the Beasts in a couple of decades after making a new army.
"For the Empire," I promised myself.
