Future Pet Shop
Chapter 222: All Living Things Are My Meal
"GRRR... GRRR..." Pingtou let out a low growl, staring warily at Shen Yibin. Shen Yibin froze, not daring to move a muscle, terrified that the slightest motion would trigger a ferocious attack.
However, Pingtou didn’t attack. It just kept staring at Shen Yibin, its fierce gaze gradually softening. Then, it slowly walked forward and began to lick the honey off the bread in Shen Yibin’s hand.
’Looks like the pill worked,’ Shen Yibin thought, letting out a long sigh of relief. ’It should be fine now.’ After all that trouble, he had finally won over this Pingtou. He boldly reached out with his other hand and stroked the fur on Pingtou’s back. "Eat up, eat up. There’ll be plenty more for you in the future. You won’t have to fight those bees anymore."
Pingtou didn’t object. Instead, it adjusted into a more comfortable position, half-squatting to let Shen Yibin groom its fur. Shen Yibin couldn’t resist taking out his phone, snapping a selfie, and posting it to his social media. "You guys pet cats, I’m petting Pingtou. Try not to be too jealous."
"Bin, you’re living it up! First a photo with Bear Grylls, and now you’ve met Pingtou. Is this your new pet? Can you bring it back to the country? You have to let me know the second you’re back!" Xu Ye replied almost instantly. It seemed he had already seen Pingtou’s legendary exploits online and knew that being able to handle one like this was no easy feat.
"No problem, I’ll bring it back after a while," Shen Yibin replied. He couldn’t return to China just yet, though. For one, he wasn’t sure if Pingtou would completely obey his commands. He had to train it properly before taking it home. For another, it was a rare opportunity to be in Africa. It would be a huge shame to leave without enjoying it first.
Ever since arriving in Africa, Shen Yibin had been busy searching for Pingtou and hadn’t had the chance to admire the continent’s magnificent scenery. Now, he was determined to take Pingtou and Hah’Er to see the sights.
"Bin, what kind of animal is this? It looks pretty cute," Bai Yanni commented, having seen the post.
’What the hell? Calling Pingtou cute? Why don’t you watch a video of one first?’ Shen Yibin thought. ’I guarantee you’ll be watching in utter awe.’ Soon after, Sun Qian, Li Shiqing, Qiao Wenqi, and others also sent messages asking about it. Even Sakai Kaori, who was already back at the Shrine, gave it a like and commented that the creature looked a little bit like Egg.
Shen Yibin replied to them one by one. By now, Sylvie seemed to think the danger had passed, so she followed the guide and walked over with Hah’Er and Alfred. She was also extremely curious about this formidable animal.
"GRRR..." The moment it saw people approaching, Pingtou became alert again. It stood up, staring in the direction of Sylvie and the others, its tail held high and all the fur on its body bristling. It looked ready to attack at any moment. It seemed the pill had worked, but for now, Pingtou only recognized Shen Yibin. Everyone else was still a potential enemy. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
"Whoa, they’re friends, they’re friends," Shen Yibin quickly soothed it, while frantically gesturing for Sylvie’s group to stop. It would be a disaster if Pingtou swiped at Sylvie.
Under his persuasion, Pingtou finally calmed down and relaxed its guard. Given the signal, Sylvie and the others approached. This time, Pingtou showed no signs of aggression, but its expression remained disdainful, and it couldn’t even be bothered to glance at them. Oh, Hah’Er was the sole exception. Pingtou stared at it for a long time and licked its chops, as if wondering whether this strange-looking creature tasted good.
If Hah’Er knew what Pingtou was thinking, even with its usually good temper, it would probably get angry enough to want to sit on Pingtou and squash it flat. Of course, whether it could actually land that sit was another matter entirely.
"What’s its name?" Sylvie asked, looking at Shen Yibin with envy. ’Why do you always get to find so many amazing pets?’ she wondered. She had tried to pet Pingtou like Shen Yibin, but it had bared its teeth and scared her away.
"Let’s call it Shi Gaofei," Shen Yibin said, revealing the name he had thought of long ago. Based on its performance with the repeated prison breaks earlier, it had more than earned the title.
The group gathered around Shi Gaofei, watching it finish the bread. After slowly getting familiar with them, Shi Gaofei no longer tried to attack their group—er, and the panda. But there was no telling how it would react to other people.
"Let’s go. It’s getting late. We should head back to the hotel first," Sylvie said, walking toward the helicopter. "What do you plan to do next? Are you taking it back right away? I can help you with the paperwork."
The honey badger was a protected species, so taking it out of the country would certainly require some paperwork. Shen Yibin nodded and replied, "Thanks so much, then. As for going back, the new store isn’t even renovated yet, so I can’t open for business. Besides, it wasn’t easy getting to Africa. I want to have some fun for a few days before I think about that."
"That’s what I was thinking, too. Let’s find an off-road vehicle tomorrow and go for a drive," Sylvie said. These past two days had been spent flying, and they had rarely gotten to see the interesting animals on the ground. Sylvie felt it was a bit of a pity as well.
"Shi Gaofei, let’s go!" Shen Yibin called out as he stood up. Hah’Er glanced at Shi Gaofei with a huff, then hugged Shen Yibin’s right leg, letting him drag it along. Shi Gaofei tilted its head in thought for a moment, then, not to be outdone, darted forward and bit down on Shen Yibin’s boot. And so, Shen Yibin stumbled toward the helicopter, dragging Hah’Er with one leg and Shi Gaofei with the other, a sight that made Sylvie and the others double over with laughter.
Over the next few days, Shen Yibin took Hah’Er and Shi Gaofei and began to race across the African savanna in an off-road vehicle. Every time they stopped the car, Shi Gaofei would pounce out. It would either snatch a venomous snake and eat it like it was a spicy snack stick, or it would grab a scorpion and chew on it like a potato chip, CRUNCH, CRUNCH. As for smaller animals like rabbits, it caught them with ease. Shen Yibin even personally witnessed Shi Gaofei tear a piece of flesh from a crocodile.
’It truly lives by the motto "All of creation is my meal,"’ Shen Yibin thought. Shi Gaofei’s ferocious hunts left Shen Yibin, Sylvie, and Alfred completely dumbfounded time and time again. It was truly a creature that could school Bear Grylls.
In comparison, Hah’Er was much more docile. It maintained its lazy demeanor, and hunting was completely out of the question. But when Shen Yibin skinned and roasted the rabbit Shi Gaofei had caught, it immediately stuck its big head over. This prompted a wave of emotion from Shen Yibin. Look at them, both black and white species. ’Why is there such a huge difference between you two?’
One fought tooth and nail for food, while the other just had to lie there and act cute to get a piece of meat. It really was a case of same colors, different fates.
