Chapter 40: Chapter 39: Ah Mu is Executed

"The Undead have gone crazy!"

"Brothers, fight to the death!"

"Fall back! We can’t hold them!"

"No, don’t you come over here!"

War cries, roars, and bloodcurdling screams filled the air.

It was chaos.

Utter chaos.

The death of their Lord had driven the Undead into a frenzy. They attacked every living creature around them, heedless of the cost or consequences.

The entire Undead Mobile Fortress was consumed by madness. The Undead swarmed out in full force. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Lizardman Warriors were still suppressed, beaten so badly they couldn’t even lift their heads.

Amid the chaos, no one noticed that the body of the already-dead Li Ziyu had turned to dust and scattered in the wind, vanishing without a trace.

...

In an endless darkness so profound he couldn’t see his hand in front of his face, Li Ziyu struggled to swim upward. He was like a drowning man, the feeling of suffocation ever-present. Gradually, pain set in—in his shoulders, his heart, his abdomen—growing more intense the higher he swam.

But right now, the pain wasn’t a bad thing. It was a good thing. At least it told him his body was still there; at least it made him feel like he was still alive. Dead men don’t feel pain.

He tilted his head back. At some point, a speck of light the size of a grain of rice had appeared above him. A voice in his heart told him to swim toward it, that it was the hope of survival.

He swam toward the light with all his might. The speck grew larger and larger, becoming like a circular doorway floating above his head. He was almost there. Gritting his teeth, he made a final charge.

"Hah..."

He broke through the light into a world of blinding white. Li Ziyu took a deep breath, and the feeling of suffocation receded. The white light gradually dissipated, and color returned to the world, allowing him to see the scene before him.

This...

He was stunned by the sight before him.

Severed limbs and rivers of blood—it was like a slaughterhouse.

’What happened? And what’s going on with the Undead?’

Li Ziyu had never seen Undead with red Soul Fire. He was utterly bewildered, almost thinking he had transmigrated again.

’Wait, something’s not right.’

Li Ziyu took a deep breath and froze again. With rivers of blood before him, the stench should have been overwhelming, yet he smelled nothing. A bad feeling crept into his heart. He looked down and jumped in fright.

He was floating in mid-air, his body transparent, just like a Ghost from the movies. ’Well, damn,’ he thought. ’So I really did die, didn’t I?’

A wave of desolation washed over Li Ziyu. ’What was I struggling so hard for? Just to become a Ghost?’

’Then again, being a Ghost is better than being completely dead, right? At least I can still have some fun. And aren’t Ghosts supposed to be immune to Physical Attacks?’

After letting his thoughts run wild for a moment, Li Ziyu gradually calmed down. ’A Ghost is a Ghost. First, let’s get used to it.’

He tried to float toward a Lizardman Warrior. The Warrior was completely focused on the Skeleton Warrior in front of him. He had several wounds on his body and had managed to inflict several fractures on the Skeleton Warrior, but none of the blows were critical.

The Lizardman Warrior didn’t react to Li Ziyu’s approach at all, as if he couldn’t see him.

’So I really am invisible. Since you can’t see me, you can’t blame me for this! Taste my fist of love!’

HYA—

Li Ziyu threw a powerful punch at the Lizardman Warrior’s face, but his fist passed right through the Warrior’s head without causing any damage.

He pulled back his fist, an ’I knew it’ expression on his face.

’A Ghost can’t hit people. That’s perfectly normal, right?’

He accepted this reality quite easily. Still, watching his Undead fight and get worn down by the Lizardmen bit by bit, unable to help in any way, felt incredibly frustrating.

’Am I supposed to just stand here and watch all my Undead get killed?’

The moment that thought formed, a piece of information surfaced in Li Ziyu’s mind: he could resurrect. Right here, next to this Lizardman!

It was a strange feeling, but Li Ziyu believed it was true.

’Even if it’s fake, it doesn’t really matter. I’m already a Ghost, might as well have some fun with it.’

’But what if it’s a real chance to come back to life?’

Li Ziyu stroked his chin, his eyes darting around. He scanned the area until he found his target—Ah Mu.

Ah Mu was also facing off against a Skeleton Warrior, and they were evenly matched. Near him lay the remains of an Undead—its skull cracked open, its Soul Fire dissipated, completely finished. But that wasn’t what caught Li Ziyu’s attention. He was focused on the Curved Saber that had fallen to the ground.

’Hehehe... My turn!’

With a single thought, he controlled his body, flashing behind Ah Mu in an instant.

’Resurrect!’

A formless wind stirred in the air as dust converged, rapidly taking on a human shape.

Just like that, Li Ziyu successfully resurrected behind Ah Mu. He opened his eyes again and, without a second thought, reached down, snatched the Curved Saber from the ground, and viciously stabbed it into Ah Mu’s kidney.

SQUELCH...

Ah Mu, who had been locked in combat with the Skeleton Warrior, froze. He slowly turned his head, his pupils shrinking abruptly. A face he never expected to see again appeared before him. It was the human—the human who should have been dead!

His gaze slowly drifted downward to the Curved Saber gripped in the human’s hands.

"Surprise, surprise! Bet you didn’t expect this, did you? I’m still alive."

Li Ziyu flashed a huge smile at Ah Mu, his teeth a ghastly white. The sight sent a chill down Ah Mu’s spine.

’Could it be? This guy looks human, but is he actually one of the Undead?’

"You..."

Before he could finish, Li Ziyu put his strength into his arms, twisted, and hooked. The Curved Saber rotated inside his body, piercing his heart, just as Ah Mu had done to him moments before.

Ah Mu’s mouth fell open, as if to scream, but the light had already faded from his eyes.

"I can resurrect. I wonder if you can?"

Muttering to himself, Li Ziyu planted a foot on Ah Mu’s corpse, struggled to pull the Curved Saber out, placed the blade against his neck, and with another heave, sliced the head clean off.

He looked up at the battlefield, his expression turning ferocious. As the battle wore on, the Undead had fallen into a disadvantageous position. The Lizardman Warriors had figured out their weakness, and with superior numbers, they were gradually gaining the upper hand.

’That’s my entire fortune! Everything I worked so hard to build up!’

’If this keeps up, I’ll be a general with no army!’

His gaze swept across the main hall. There were plenty of Undead remains, but just as many Lizardman corpses.

’Decompose!’

’System, decompose the corpses for me!’

[Decomposed Lizardman +1. Obtained Skeleton x1 unit, Damaged Lizard Hide x1, Soul Energy x50 units.]

...

’Summon Undead!’

As the system decomposed the bodies, Li Ziyu summoned new Undead.

One by one, freshly-minted Undead answered his call, instinctively found weapons, and joined the fray.

The newly summoned Undead still had eerie-blue Soul Fire. The Undead with red Soul Fire, however, seemed to recognize these newcomers as allies. They didn’t attack them; instead, they coordinated their efforts, charging the Lizardman Warriors with even greater ferocity.

Li Ziyu stood with the Curved Saber in one hand and Ah Mu’s severed head in the other. Covered in blood, with a ferocious expression on his face, he looked like a Demon that had crawled out of Hell.

’Come on!’

’Let me show you what real Undead are!’

’Let me show you what it means to face an army that only grows larger!’

But summoning new Undead wasn’t enough. Li Ziyu looked down at the head in his hand, then raised it high. "Your leader has been vanquished!"
