Chapter 18: Choosing Weapons
Seeing Luna’s nod, a surprised look appeared in Joshua’s face.
Then...
My heart clenched when he began looking at me, then Luna and then at me again.
I thought Joshua had become suspicious of us, but when I subtly glanced at Luna, I saw she looked completely unbothered.
Seeing this, I also let myself relax.
A moment later, Joshua turned around and began walking away.
"Do you want any weapon?" he asked.
I nodded at Luna in thanks, then quickly followed him, "Yes. It would be good if I can get a spear?"
My perception was higher and I could see through my opponents’ moves and react in time. What I lacked was the power to deal damage.
I could use other weapons, like daggers too, but if I could get a spear, it would be better because I wouldn’t need to get too close to my opponents to deal them damage. After all, if my opponent turned out to be stronger and faster, I would end up severely injured, if not dead, if I was right next to them.
"Good choice." Joshua nodded in approval and began heading in another direction.
A short while later, we arrived in front of a large house. The door handles were tied tightly with clothes and above the doors was written something in an unfamiliar script.
Joshua untied them and pushed open the door.
As the light illuminated the interior, I saw racks of weapons—Bows, Arrows, Javelins, Spears, Swords, Daggers and some other peculiar weapons too. There were also armors made of animal hide, metal and wooden shields.
I stared at them in awe. This was the first time I had seen so many weapons in one place. In fact, I had only ever seen such weapons on internet.
"Come in." Joshua said, entering the armory.
He then pointed at the spears and said, "That whichever you like."
I swept my gaze across the available option—three spears. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
One was nine feet long and looked very heavy. The other two were around seven feet long and didn’t look as heavy. All three had over one feet long, very sharp blades.
’They can easily cut through flesh.’ I thought, imagining the blade slashing across a beast and cutting a deep wound.
After a moment, I chose one of the seven-feet-long spears. When I grabbed its shaft, I realized the metal wasn’t as rigid as I had thought which surprised me.
How could metal not be hard?
I didn’t give it much thought. This was a supernatural world and everything could be possible here.
"Woah!" As I tried to lift it, I realized it was too heavy for me to handle easily and I staggered while trying to control it.
Pat!
Joshua extended his hand and grabbed the spear, holding it in place. Then, he looked at me and shook his head, "If you are just this strong, you can’t use it yet."
He then placed it back on the rack, "Choose something else."
I felt my face redden in embarrassment. Then I glanced at the wooden spear in his hand and asked, "Can this one be used to kill?"
Joshua glanced at his spear, a small smile appearing on his face, "Of course."
"Then can I ask someone to make one like this?"
In response, an amused look appeared on Joshua’s face, then he shook his head, "You might think it wouldn’t be heavy because it’s made from wood, but you are wrong. It’s heavier than the three of them combined. If you don’t believe me, give it a try."
He held the spear in front me.
I looked at it and then at him before reaching out grabbing the shaft. A moment later, I released it because the feeling that was transmitted to my hand told me it was really heavy and... powerful.
"I take the daggers then." I said as I walked over to the daggers and picked up a pair. Each dagger was a little over one-feet-long and their blades were very sharp and tough.
...
The guards of the east wall noticed as I returned with Joshua, who gestured for the guys sitting near the gate to open it.
After I walked out and entered the forest, everyone looked at Joshua, "What’s going on?"
"He hadn’t lied yesterday when he said he came from the forest." Joshua said and before he could continue, someone snorted, "Don’t tell me he lived in the forest? Do you think it’s possible? Even we hunters can’t stay in the forest for a prolonged period—"
Slap!
Suddenly, a slap landed on the back of his hand, cutting him off, "Let him finish first."
"Randy, you...!" The guy glared at the one who slapped him, the latter, Randy, casually picked his teeth in response.
Joshua ignored the duo and continued, "...Apparently, he has lost his memories and doesn’t know where he came from or how he appeared in the forest. I had Luna verify it. He wasn’t lying."
Others nodded, but the one who was slapped, Oliver, frowned, "I heard she had gone to meet him late at night and then went to deliver him food in the morning.
"What are you trying to say, Oli?" asked Randy as pressed his hand on Oliver’s head.
Oliver swept his gaze across everyone, who was looking at him with narrowed eyes because they didn’t like that he was suspicious of Luna, and said, "Don’t give me that look. You all know that girl has been curious about the outside world since she was a child. Maybe this Eren guy somehow tricked her into lying?"
"You are not wrong about her curiosity and wish to go to the outside world, and it’s also true she isn’t about tricking us." Joshua nodded in agreement.
Just as Oliver’s eyes were lighting up, Joshua looked him in the eyes and added, "However... she would never do anything that could harm the village. Thus, since she has favored him, whether he lied to me or not, he can be trusted for the time being."
"I understand." nodded Oliver before falling silent with a sullen look on his face.
Randy glanced at him, then to change the topic and lighten the mood, he asked Joshua, "By the way, wasn’t he carrying daggers? Don’t tell me he plans on fighting the beasts in close combat?"
"It seems so." nodded Joshua.
"Heh, it seems there is really something wrong with his head." Oliver sneered.
"Maybe he isn’t being reckless." Someone muttered, "Remember the tears in his clothes? He had fought the beasts in close combat and survived."
Oliver pursed his lips and fell silent.
