Gourmet: From a Stall in Northern Europe
Chapter 398 - 310: Full-Time Food Blogger, Part-Time Matchmaker
"Oh, is that so? Then there’s no way to prepare in advance; everything has to be made on the spot?"
"Yes, unless a guest lets us know ahead of time what they want to eat, only then can we prepare in advance."
Lin Chen glanced at his watch. It was nearing four o’clock, and there were no updates from the back office yet. It seems today’s dinner will be another tight schedule.
"But it’s no big deal. For Western dishes, the kitchen always has veal stock and vegetable stock ready to use, so it’s fine. Asian food often involves quick stir-frying, which doesn’t really take much time."
"On average, a table of guests takes about thirty to fifty minutes, and that’s if they’re ordering more than usual. For those who only want one or two dishes, it can be done in ten to twenty minutes."
"I see..."
Zhao Shun also checked the time, pondered for a few seconds, and said, "By the way, Brother Lin, Brother Zhang mentioned we could choose to rent a whole floor for the dormitory, right? Is there any availability, something close by?"
"A place?"
Lin Chen was momentarily taken aback. He hadn’t really paid attention to these things. He only had three employees under him: Dais Elsa and Lucas. The former were temporarily merged with Helena’s team, and the four of them lived in a small suite with two rooms, which wasn’t a big deal.
Lucas had always lived alone, having moved from the pet room to a single room. He never shared a room with other employees, maybe because he had some connection with Jiang Shuqi, and thus received special treatment.
"Which department handles accommodations? Could it be the front desk? Or HR?"
He scratched his head, feeling somewhat stumped by the question.
He really felt like he had become a leader now, having to worry about employee accommodations.
With nothing better to do, he immediately got up and headed towards the hotel.
"I’ll go ask for you. Let’s exchange contact numbers, and I’ll add you to the group later."
"Huh? Should we go along as well? If there are any issues, we could address them on the spot, no hassle."
"Yes, yes, it’s better to go together. We can’t let the boss run back and forth; if someone needs to run, it’ll be us!!"
The two of them hurriedly stood up, dragging their luggage and carrying heavy backpacks as they followed him. Seeing this, Lin Chen nodded to himself, feeling satisfied that he hadn’t hired the wrong people.
Solving the accommodation issue was quite easy. The location was in a residential area, ten minutes walk from the restaurant, just signed a couple of days ago. Nobody had moved in yet.
Since they moved in early, the two of them could freely choose which floor they wanted to stay on.
They toured around and inspected the house’s structure, decisively choosing the two rooms connected to the first-floor living room.
Although the second floor was quieter, houses abroad like this one are often old wooden structures, built at least several decades ago—walking around would produce some noise.
Besides, they belonged to the kitchen staff and, more often than not, would have to cook for themselves. The kitchen was on the first floor, making living on the second floor inconveniently troublesome, even for fetching a drink.
The basement was similarly inconvenient.
Although it didn’t have the issue of floor noise, these semi-basement structures generally have no sunlight, making them damp and dark, akin to being imprisoned. Great Xia People clearly don’t have a fondness for such conditions.
After weighing everything, the first floor seemed most suitable for them—easy access for going out, avoiding disturbing other roommates, although they still didn’t know who the roommates would be.
After settling their luggage, the three returned to the restaurant, and it was already 4:40.
The dinner guest’s notification had been sent to Lin Chen’s phone from the back office software moments earlier, expected to arrive around five o’clock—no need to rush.
Seeing the three of them, Dais, Elsa, and Lucas curiously gathered around.
"Hello, I’m Dais, a server on Chef Lin’s team."
"I’m Elsa, also a server."
"?"
Chen Dongliang looked at Zhao Shun, bewildered, apparently not understanding a word.
The two spoke in English, fearing they wouldn’t be understood. Seeing Old Chen’s reaction, they felt disheartened.
A colleague who fully doesn’t understand English... how will we communicate in the future?
"Hello, hello, I’m Zhao Shun; just call me Zhao. He doesn’t understand English, and I can only understand a little, not speak much. Just call him Chen."
In a few short sentences, Zhao Shun stammered for a while before finishing, feeling he had used all the English words he’d ever learned.
Fortunately, these were simple nouns. Dais and Elsa, having frequent contact with international customers, quickly caught on, extending their hands for a quick handshake with the two, as a form of greeting.
"Do I need an introduction?"
Lucas chuckled, brushing his golden hair back to reveal his sharp jawline and remarkably handsome features.
"Uh... yes, I’ve watched your videos quite a bit."
Not only Zhao Shun, but even Old Chen wasn’t surprised at the sight of this golden-haired, blue-eyed handsome guy speaking fluent Mandarin.
Old Chen wasn’t very adept at using his phone, but he mastered the basics. He hadn’t missed any of Lucas’s videos, some of which he watched multiple times, prioritizing skill improvement.
He used to cook home-style meals, akin to fast food in small towns, whereas the dishes Lin Chen prepared in his videos were typically snacks found in big cities; some even had foreign flavors, which he didn’t know how to make.
Seizing the opportunity to go abroad, making money was his primary goal, but he also wanted to learn some advanced culinary skills. Should he become unemployed again, he could find better jobs back home than before.
Essentially, this was a gilding journey.
Of course, if he could keep working here, he would definitely be willing to stay steadily.
With this salary and these benefits, where else can he find such a place?
Helena, Lucinda, and Jonathan also came out from the kitchen to greet the two of them.
"You guys are prepping for tomorrow this early?"
Seeing Helena’s helpless expression, Dais quietly walked over and nudged her with her elbow.
"Yeah, business was particularly good this morning. We ran out of all the stock we had prepared in advance. Jonathan couldn’t handle it alone, so we had to help out, otherwise, tomorrow’s lunch could become a big problem."
"I don’t know if we have Lin to thank, but that guy finally started posting job openings."
"Our recruitment isn’t like yours that needs to hire from Great Xia. If we’re fast, we might see someone tomorrow, or at the latest in a couple of days, considering the benefits of our hotel are quite good."
"That’s true."
Dais nodded in agreement and glanced worriedly at Jonathan, "I just hope he can hire some reliable people. If they’re like him and love to slack off, then we’re screwed."
"Don’t worry, Lucinda and I will keep an eye on him!"
Lucinda made a cutting motion across her throat and said fiercely, "If he dares to hire slackers, I’ll report it directly to the chef!"
"?"
Elsa cautiously asked, "By chef, do you mean Mr. Marchello?"
"Of course! Who else could it be? Lin can’t control him!"
"That’s right," Helena sighed in resignation, holding her forehead, "The only one who can handle that guy is Chef Marchello. The chef even secretly asked us about Jonathan’s performance last time and clearly stated that if there’s any unsolvable problem, we can skip him and report directly to the chef."
"Recently, that guy’s performance has been okay. If he had half of Lin’s positive attitude towards work, that would be great. We really envy you guys working with Lin."
Speaking of this, Dais and Elsa were also full of gratitude.
Luckily, they didn’t end up with a chef like Jonathan!
They had seen plenty of his lazy behavior both last week and the week before.
If it weren’t for Lin’s proactive nature driving some tourist economy and the influx of tourists due to the upcoming Olympics, Jonathan probably would still be in his lazy ways, forced to prep due to the busyness.
"What are they gossiping about secretly?" 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
Unable to understand French, Zhao Shun had to turn to Lucas for help.
It’s not surprising he was curious, mainly because from the moment he got off the plane until reaching the hotel, he hardly saw any beauties, only to encounter three stunning female colleagues in the restaurant.
Another one, although average in figure, had great proportions. Her facial features looked like a mix of East and West, as delicate as a porcelain doll, making it hard not to be curious!
Lucas stared at him thoughtfully for a few seconds, then chuckled.
"How long have you been single, buddy?"
"Uh..."
"Could it be you’ve never..."
"Rubbish! How’s that possible, I was just trying to recall how many girlfriends I’ve had, there are so many I can’t remember clearly!"
"Oh~~ okay, okay, but unfortunately, Dais and Helena are both married, their kids are already in school. We’re not sure about Lucinda as she usually talks less, but Elsa is definitely single!"
He said this, deliberately leaning over and lowering his voice.
"Let me tell you, Elsa is a mixed-race of three countries: Japan, France, and one parent from Sakura People’s side, another from Romantic Country’s side, with grandparents from Great Xia, so her Sakura and Romantic bloodlines are stronger, she’s like half Sakura."
"She has a great personality, very calm, hardworking, and diligent—a typical Sakura-style virtuous wife and mother. What’s more important is that she’s only eighteen!"
"If you manage to woo her, never mind immigration or green card stuff, at least you’ll make us Great Xia proud!"
"?!"
Zhao Shun was stunned, his eyes shining brightly.
No wonder things weren’t going well for him back home; his true match was abroad!!
"Hey, hey, Zhao, we’re here to work, not to find love."
Old Chen, unable to watch any longer, hurriedly stepped in to advise, "We’ve just arrived, and the work hasn’t even been stabilized yet, and you’re already thinking of finding a wife. If the superiors catch you harassing the girls, who knows, you might get fired."
"Uh... that’s true."
Old Chen’s words were like a slap in the face, instantly bringing Zhao Shun back to reality.
Lucas smirked, apparently still not giving up.
"That’s true, but I know Old Lin well. We came up together from setting up stalls, he’s not the conservative type, very easy-going."
"As long as you do your main job well, and appear very hardworking, along with your shared identity as Great Xia people with Old Lin, helping her out more often to boost goodwill isn’t hard at all!"
