Harem Of Eternal Yandere Beasts: My Legendary Wives
Chapter 43: What Doran Summons (2)
Which meant the Silver rank standing in the courtyard right now was a floor. A starting point. Whatever Doran’s stag became at the end of the formation period, Silver was simply what it looked like at the beginning.
Orion thought about what Doran had said about summoning not determining what you became.
Thought about himself saying it.
Thought about standing in that alley on day one with a broken arm.
And then, because he couldn’t help it, and because the old bastard was probably watching and would appreciate the symmetry, he looked up at the sky and said nothing.
Luna made the almost-laugh sound beside him. "Master is thinking at the sky again."
"Quiet," he said.
"Hehe."
Magnus turned from Doran and walked back to his seat. He passed Orion on the way. Didn’t slow down. But his eyes moved to Orion for exactly two seconds, and in those two seconds there was something that was not the calculation Orion had expected from a man reading his family’s position.
It was something closer to recognition.
Then he was past and seated and the ceremony was moving into the formal documentation phase and the family was recalibrating around the new information.
Seth had his arms crossed again.
Doran looked across the courtyard at Orion.
Orion looked back.
The stag was standing at Doran’s side. Antlers still growing. Patient and silver-eyed and completely unhurried about the process of becoming whatever it was going to become.
Good instincts, Orion thought. Good instincts in a beast reflected on the contractor. He’d heard that before from someone with sharp eyes.
The ceremony concluded. The documentation was completed. The family dispersed with the specific motion of a group that had received more information than expected and needed to go process it privately.
Doran found Orion in the corridor outside.
"Tomorrow morning," Doran said. "Training ground."
"Same time," Orion said.
Doran nodded. Looked at the stag standing at his side. Looked at Orion. "What do I name it."
Orion looked at the stag. At the growing antlers. At the silver eyes that looked back at him with the calm intelligence of something that knew what it was and wasn’t concerned about whether anyone else did.
"Ask it," Orion said.
Doran looked at him. "Summons don’t."
"Luna told me her name herself," Orion said. "Mist accepted the name I offered. Either works." He looked at the stag. "Try both."
Doran was quiet for a moment. Then he turned to the stag with the slight self-consciousness of someone doing something they’d been told was unconventional.
The stag’s silver eyes were steady.
Doran said something Orion didn’t hear, quiet enough that it stayed between them.
The stag’s ears moved forward. Once. The same gesture of acknowledgment that Mist had given.
Whatever Doran had said, the stag had taken it.
"Well," Orion said.
Doran looked at him with the expression he’d been covering over all morning and not quite managing to hide anymore. "Yeah," he said.
"Training ground tomorrow," Orion said. "Bring the stag. We’ll see how the footwork translates to combat with a contracted beast present."
Doran looked at him. "You’re already planning training sessions around a beast I contracted three minutes ago."
"Is that a complaint."
A pause. The controlled neutral expression made its standard attempt and failed more completely than usual.
"No," Doran said.
He walked away with the stag moving quietly at his side, both of them unhurried, both of them carrying the particular quality of things in the early stage of becoming what they were going to be.
Luna wound her arm through Orion’s. "The stag is interesting," she said.
"Yes."
"It looked at master like it was taking notes," she said.
"Smart beast."
"It looked at me like it was also taking notes," she said, with a slightly different tone.
"Also smart," Orion said.
She pressed closer. "I don’t mind it as much as I thought I would."
"High praise from you," he said.
"Don’t push it," she said.
He pulled up the system on the walk back to the manor.
◈ SOVEREIGN CULTIVATION ◈
Stage 1: 61%
Projected completion: 4 days
◈ DAYS TO TRIAL ◈
11
◈ HOST NOTE ◈
Two Sovereign Core users in one family.
The old bastard is either very clever or very committed to chaos.
Probably both.
◈ ◈ ◈
He stopped walking.
Read that second line again.
Two Sovereign Core users in one family.
He thought about Doran standing in the circle for ninety seconds producing what looked like nothing before the glow came. Slow and deep and blue-silver. The stag’s anomalous signature that didn’t match any standard category. The antlers still growing. The two to three year development period.
The elder had called it an unofficial classification.
He thought about what his own unofficial classification had looked like from the outside before the system arrived.
He looked at the manor ahead.
Thought about the old bastard and two-century setups and the very specific body he’d been placed into and the question of whether it had been chosen for its history or for its bloodline.
He thought about a family that had been producing geniuses for generations and whether genius was the word or whether genius was just what people called it when they didn’t have a better framework.
He closed the screen.
"Luna," he said.
"Mm."
"How many people in this family do you think have a Sovereign Core and don’t know it."
She was quiet for a moment. Considering it genuinely rather than deflecting.
"More than one," she said finally.
"Yes," he said.
He kept walking.
Eleven days.
There was still a mechanism in the trial grounds with his name on it and an elder who had looked him in the eye and told him surprises were part of the test and a full day of training ahead before he could sleep.
But he walked a little differently than he had this morning.
The stag’s silver eyes had looked at him like it was taking notes.
Doran had walked into that courtyard with his shoulder level.
Some things were worth noting.
He filed them all and kept moving.
Four days later, at six fourteen in the morning, the cultivation thread stopped being something he maintained and became something he was.
He felt it happen.
Not dramatically. Not like the breakthrough moments in the stories he’d read before all of this, no surge of power, no visible manifestation, no light coming out of him in directions light shouldn’t come from. Just a quiet internal shift, the way a door that had been slightly ajar for weeks finally settled fully open.
The mana circulation that had been requiring active management simply continued on its own.
He stopped walking mid-drill and stood in the training ground and checked.
Thread present. Running. No active input from him.
He looked away. Focused on something else entirely. Counted the birds in the hedge by sound through the Night Domain. Came back.
Still running.
He tried to break it. Physical exertion, dropping into a fast movement sequence, three consecutive Sovereign Steps in different directions. Came back each time and checked.
Still running.
He sat down on the training ground stone.
The system appeared.
◈ SOVEREIGN CULTIVATION ◈
Stage 1 [Circulation]: COMPLETE
All 12 elements integrated.
Internal mana circulation: Autonomous.
Sovereign Core operating at established baseline.
◈ STAGE 1 REWARDS ◈
Stage 2 Unlocked: [Refinement]
Physical Enhancement Upgrade: ACTIVE
Mythic Energy: +50
◈ PHYSICAL ENHANCEMENT UPGRADE ◈
Internal mana density has reached the threshold for passive physical reinforcement.
Effect: Continuous low-level reinforcement of physical structure.
Current enhancement level: Foundation.
Scales with Stage progression.
This is not a combat buff. This is your new baseline.
◈ STAGE 2 PREVIEW ◈
[Refinement]
Where Stage 1 established circulation, Stage 2 refines quality.
The mana circulating through your core is functional. It is not yet optimal.
Stage 2 develops mana purity, increasing the efficiency of everything that draws from the Sovereign Core.
Duration at current rate: Unknown. Stage 2 is qualitative, not quantitative. Progress is not linear.
◈ HOST NOTE ◈
Stage 1 done.
Seven days before you said.
The old bastard would be pleased.
Don’t tell him that.
◈ ◈ ◈
He sat with it for a moment.
Your new baseline.
Not a temporary state. Not a buff with a duration. This was simply what he was now, physical structure continuously reinforced by internal mana, the Sovereign Core doing quietly and constantly what it had been building toward.
He stood up.
Felt the difference immediately.
Not like he’d been weak before. Just like the ground was slightly more his. Like his body had more resolution to it, the same image rendered at higher quality. Movement felt fractionally more precise. His feet knew the stone.
He tested it. Ran the movement sequence again. Three Sovereign Steps, direction changes, landing on the fourth in a guard stance.
The arrival was completely clean. No micro-adjustment needed. He was simply where he intended to be in the position he intended to occupy.
He thought about Crane’s formation. About the eight second suppression window and the two seconds of reduced precision after displacement.
With the physical enhancement active and Stage One complete, those two seconds were going to be considerably more functional than before.
He filed it.
Doran arrived at his usual time and immediately looked at him with the perceptive expression he’d developed for reading when something had changed. "Something happened."
"Cultivation milestone," Orion said.
Doran looked at him for a moment. Then at the training ground. Something in the way Orion was standing apparently communicated enough. "Big one."
"Stage One complete," Orion said.
